Am 16. Oktober 1871 gründete Carl Bamberg in der Linienstraße
158 seine Firma, die "Werkstätten für Praecisions-Mechanik und
Optik Berlin", die später als Askania-Werke weltberühmt wurde.
Schon sehr früh beschäftigte sich der Firmengründer mit der Konstruktion
von Zeitmessgeräten und bereits im Jahre 1875 wurden von Bamberg die
ersten Zeitbälle hergestellt. Diese Geräte dienten zur Fernanzeige der
Uhrzeit in den Häfen; als Anzeige diente ein Ball, der zu bestimmten
Uhrzeiten herunter gelassen wurde. 1876 stellte Askania erstmals auf
Messen in London und Philadelphia aus.
Dank einer rasanten Geschäftsentwicklung konnte Bamberg den Firmensitz
1888 nach Berlin-Friedenau verlegen, in die damalige Kaiserallee
(heute Bundesallee).
Die innovative Kraft des Gründers bestimmte selbst über seinen Tod hinaus den
Geist des Hauses Askania. Daher verwundert es kaum, dass, dank der ihrer Zeit
weit vorauseilenden Präzisionsgeräte, Carl Bamberg's Askania-Werke zum bedeutendsten
deutschen Unternehmen im Bau von Luftfahrtinstrumenten und -geräten
avancierte. Das Ergebnis der kompromisslosen Qualitätsphilosophie: Kaum ein
Flugzeug ohne Askania-Bordinstrumente in den 30er und 40er Jahren!
Als logische Programmerweiterung folgte die Herstellung von hervorragenden
mechanischen Flieger-Armbanduhren.

n October 16th 1871 Carl Bamberg founded his company Askania for precision
mechanics and optics in Berlin, Germany.
From the very beginning his focus was on the engineering of precision instruments to measure
time and just a few years later, in 1875, the company produced the first "time ball", a
device used to indicate the time in ports. At specific times the ball was lowered, thus visible
indicating the time for all ships in the port.
One year later the company presented its products at fairs in Philadelphia and London with
great success.
The company rapidly outgrew its facility and in 1888 Bamberg moved the principal office
from Berlin-Friedenau to the former Kaiserallee in Berlin (now known as the Bundesallee).
The founder's innovative spirit became the driving force for the company for the decades to
come. Over the years Carl Bamberg's Askania precision instruments became the most
important manufacturer for airplane instrumentation and pilot watches providing equipment
in the 30's and 40's to nearly all airplanes.
Known for the highest standards of quality and precision it was just natural that pilots
demanded a wrist watch that would fulfil the same high standards.
Reviving the true spirit of the company’s founder we introduce Askania watches 2002.
These exceptional automatic watches are produced for highest precision, shock and water
resistant to 100m. Some models have a mineral crystal bottom imprinted with the
"Heinkel Arrow", which reveals the beautiful mechanics of the automatic Swiss movement.
Following the tradition Askania today continues the legend with:

Die Paten der neu entstandenen Askania-Fliegeruhrenkollektion sind die Borduhren alter Flugzeuglegenden.
Die Heinkel Blitz HE 70 ist durch den „Blitzverkehr” der Deutschen Lufthansa im Luftdreieck
Berlin-Köln-Frankfurt bekannt geworden.
Das Cockpit wurde ausschließlich mit Askania-Instrumenten bestückt:
den Wendezeigern, einem Fernkompass, einem Kurszeiger,
einer Borduhr und einem Kursgeber!

The new Askania Pilot Wrist Watch Collection was conceived from the design of the instrumentation of the legendary airplanes.
The Heinkel Blitz HE 70, a single prop plane of the thirties was specifically designed for high speed air traffic. Well-known
for its use in the 'Blitzverkehr' - the high speed transportation of the German Lufthansa - between Berlin,
Cologne and Frankfurt. The top speed was 370 km/h (approx. 230 mile/h) while carrying
the pilot and 4 passengers. Of course, the Blitz HE 70's cockpit was exclusively
fitted with Askania instruments, compass, clock and navigation devices.

"Taifun" - diesen Beinamen gab Elly Beinhorn, die Fluglegende der 30er Jahre, der Messerschmidt Me 108. Bekannt und legendär durch
viele Rekordflüge, u. a. dem Langstreckenweltrekord Rio de Janeiro - New York von 1938 und dem Höhenweltrekord (9125m) von 1939,
wurde das Flugzeug ab 1934 für Europa-Rundflüge eingesetzt.

"Typhoon" was the name Elly Beinhorn - a famous European aviator in the 30's - gave to the Messerschmidt ME 108.
This airplane became legendary for several world records flying nonstop from Rio de Janeiro to New York in
1938 followed by altitude records in 1939. Of course the planes were equipped with Askania instruments
which were used to conceive the design for the "Typhoon" collection.
