Other Perspectives The word aesthetics derives from aesthesis, which means the ability to feel or experience the world through the senses. Our society is more in favour of anaesthetics, and we spend insane amounts of energy and money on numbing our senses. We are scared of touch, frightened of pain, disgusted by smell, uncomfortable with rain and wind and our taste has been subdued by food that is uniform, bland and devoid of flavour. We have become comfortably numbed and disconnected from the very earth that brought us in to being. By comparison the inherent world-view of Aboriginals in Australia is (what remains after 300 years of cultural genocide) that they are the tongue of the earth and their stories, songs and paintings are born from this inseparable connection. Indigenous cultures all over the planet have a similar outlook. There is no separation between them and earth. Our current state of fragmentation has brought us a sense of despair. Thinking of ourselves as superior beings gives us the right to massacre forests and poison our air and water. Only by reconnecting with the infinite complexity and elegant beauty of our planet is it possible to reconnect and start seeing and sensing.
