In many books this page is somewhat superfluous...
shaping text
... because there is nothing on it. The title of the
book, set small, that’s all. ‘Half-title’ or ‘bastard
title’ is what this page is called. The French say
‘false title’ (faux-titre) and the Germans call it ‘dirty ‘dirt
title’ (Schmutztitel). The actual presentation of the
book – including its subtitle, author, publisher
and perhaps the place and year of publication
– happens on the title page, which comes right
after this one. The half-title is a bit of a throwaway
page. Its original function was to protect the book
block on its way from the publishers to the binder
or buyer. Some bookbinders used to cut off the
half-title, to resell the paper. Then as now, it is not
a good idea to discard the half-title and begin the
book block with the title page, as the book cover or
binding will be glued to it (with or without the use
of endpapers) and the page will not open elegantly.
And so this page will forever be a non-page: a false
start, a leaf with no contents. Except in this book.
