The engine<br />

All <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> Roadsters are powered<br />

by an air/oil-cooled 2-cylinder flat twin engine<br />

with modern 4-valve technology, digital engine<br />

electronics and fuel injection. While the<br />

<strong>BMW</strong> R <strong>1150</strong> R generates a powerful torque of<br />

98 Nm at 5,250 rpm and an output of 62.5 kW<br />

(85 bhp) at 6,750 rpm, the <strong>BMW</strong> R <strong>850</strong> R delivers<br />

an impressive torque of 77 Nm at 5,600 rpm and<br />

an output of 52 kW (70 bhp) at 7,000 rpm.<br />

In addition, the dual-ignition on the R <strong>1150</strong> R<br />

ensures compliance with the stringent EU-2<br />

exhaust emission standard – and enhanced<br />

refinement with reduced fuel consumption on part<br />

throttle. And of course, every Roadster runs with a<br />

closed loop 3-way catalytic converter for environmental<br />

protection – like all <strong>BMW</strong> motorcycles.<br />

6-speed gearbox<br />

For efficient transmission of the engine’s power to the<br />

road, this bike has a perfectly tuned 6-speed gearbox,<br />

with a light, precision shift action than makes moving<br />

through the gears a particular pleasure. Sixth gear is<br />

low, to emphasise the Roadster’s sports character, but<br />

as an optional extra the alternative overdrive 6th gear<br />

can be ordered instead.<br />

The <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> shaft drive<br />

A typical feature of every <strong>BMW</strong> boxer motorcycle,<br />

and a driveline concept with several advantages.<br />

It’s a logical continuation of this engine’s frontto-back<br />

crankshaft layout, so that the power flow<br />

reaches the rear wheel with no losses caused by<br />

changes of direction. And <strong>BMW</strong>’s shaft drive is<br />

particularly reliable, long-lasting and needs only<br />

minimum maintenance.<br />

<strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> Telelever<br />

Effective front wheel location is the task of the<br />

<strong>BMW</strong> Telelever, a combination of telescopic fork and<br />

leading link. As well as a smooth ride, the Telelever<br />

means high dynamic stability and longitudinal rigidity,<br />

and counteracts brake dive. The <strong>BMW</strong> Roadster<br />

scarcely dips its nose at all when you brake – an<br />

ideal situation for the <strong>BMW</strong> Integral ABS to operate<br />

efficiently when needed.<br />

EVO brake<br />

The Roadster is fitted as standard with the new EVO brake – the<br />

highest stage of development of the <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> front brake.<br />

It has two large-dimension brake discs (320 mm) and 4-piston fixed<br />

calipers with two larger pistons each for supreme braking power,<br />

ranging from gentle to gripping. The actuating ratio has been modified<br />

to significantly reduce the physical force required. As compared<br />

to conventional brake systems this translates into 20% greater breakpower<br />

with the same lever effort applied. The partially integral version<br />

of <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> Integral ABS is available as an optional<br />

extra. If this is fitted, when the brake lever is operated, the system<br />

ensures optimum distribution of braking force between front and<br />

rear wheels. The foot brake, meanwhile, acts only on the rear wheel.<br />

Combined with the powerful brake servo, ABS with dynamic braking<br />

force distribution ensures the shortest possible stopping distances.<br />

style. Sporty, laid back or classic – but always comfort<br />

and safety combined. Developed by specialists, tested in<br />

laboratories and on the road. Manufactured from high-quality<br />

leather or state-of-the-art high-tech materials in <strong>BMW</strong><br />

C.A.R.E. quality (Concept of Advanced Rider Equipment).<br />

Black Leather suit.<br />

High-tech leather to keep your temperature down. The Black<br />

Leather suit, made from extra tough nappa cowhide leather,<br />

complies with the strict <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> C.A.R.E. quality<br />

standard, and features the TFL Cool System to reflect the<br />

sun’s rays. The result is a surface temperature as much as<br />

22 degrees Celsius lower than untreated leathers. The suit<br />

is also fitted with CE protectors in the shoulder, back, elbow<br />

and knee areas, with the latter being height-adjustable.<br />

Contur Plus boot (not illustrated).<br />

The Contur Plus boot is equipped with an inner lace system<br />

and anatomical footbed for the perfect fit. Whether sun,<br />

wind or rain – you can always count on the highly breathable<br />

and waterproof GORE-TEX ® membrane.<br />

AirFlow 3 suit (not illustrated).<br />

Ensures you stay cool in even the hottest conditions.<br />

Large AirTex inserts in the jacket and trousers safeguard<br />

cool air circulation while the highly abrasion-resistant<br />

Dynatec, removable CE pro tectors and back support ensure<br />

a safe ride even when it is very hot. The helmet AirFlow<br />

(not illustrated) enables you to keep a cool head in hot<br />

situations. To ensure you have a good grip on things, the<br />

AirFlow gloves (not illustrated) give your hands the chance<br />

to breathe with a mixture of leather and air-permeable AirTex.<br />

At high speeds, the SportIntegral helmet provides excellent<br />

uplift and directional stability with minimum noise levels.<br />

Other bonuses of this lightweight (approx. 1,350 g) helmet<br />

lining of DuPont Coolmax ® , the seamless outer shell of GRP<br />

and the wide field of view with distortion-free and anti-fog visor.<br />

accessories that satisfies just about every wish. A well-planned system, with all the items specially developed<br />

and matched to the bike and to each other. <strong>BMW</strong> <strong>Motorrad</strong> can supply you with whatever you feel would make<br />

the encounter with your bike into a still deeper, personal experience.<br />

Pillion seat cover<br />

If you’re touring solo on the Roadster you<br />

can install this cover instead of the pillion seat.<br />

It has space for everything you might need<br />

for a short journey to the beach, the swimming<br />

pool or a quick holiday: tent, groundsheet,<br />

sleeping bag etc.<br />

Comfort pillion seat<br />

If you regularly ride two-up, your pillion passenger<br />

will appreciate this comfort pillion seat with its even<br />

more effective upholstery.<br />

Pannier cases and holders<br />

For when the Roadster takes you on a more extensive<br />

tour: these large rigid-shell pannier cases hold<br />

25 litres (left) and 31 litres (right). They don’t have<br />

to be detached each evening either: when you<br />

want to take your personal belongings into a hotel,<br />

for instance, you can remove the matching inner<br />

bags that also protect your clothes against dirt and<br />

moisture. A practical feature for the pillion passenger:<br />

the pannier case holder has integral handgrips.<br />

Softcase<br />

With a volume of 22 litres, the Softcase provides<br />

plenty of additional carrying space. Made from tough<br />

nylon and water-repellent, it has practical fastenings<br />

to attach it to the luggage rack or the pillion seat.<br />

There is also a built-in rain hood.<br />

Speedster windshield<br />

The small Speedster windshield is<br />

made from scratch-resistant, splinterproof<br />

polycarbonate material and gives the Roadster<br />

a particular sense of sporting flair.<br />

Luggage bridge (not illustrated)<br />

There is a classic luggage bridge designed to match<br />

the Roadster. Articles – or the Softcase – can be<br />

secured to it safely with flexible cords.<br />

Tankrucksack<br />

A loyal and practical companion on longer journeys –<br />

the tank rucksack has been specially developed for<br />

the Roadster and matches the shape of the tank<br />

perfectly. A zipper can be used to vary its height and<br />

increase the capacity from 12 to 16 litres if needed.<br />

The rucksack also has a large map pocket and<br />
