points? On this BMW Roadster by BMW Motorrad, it’s certainly true. It leans into

Anyone who calls the BMW Motorrad roadster a “cornering genius” or a “sports
roadster” has probably ridden it themselves – and experienced this bike in its
element, from the first dynamic twist of the throttle to its maximum thrust – in the
BMW R 1150 R a mighty 98 Nm at 5,250 rpm, in the BMW R 850 R a generous
77 Nm at 5,600 rpm. In both cases, the 6 precisely shifting gears always provide the
right ratio: from a straight sprint to a casual cruising speed with plenty of back-up
power. You don’t want to miss out on this any longer? Understandable! The Roadster
is waiting for you now at your BMW Motorrad dealer – with a powerful, modern
4-valve boxer engine in two capacity variations, either 1,130 cc or 848 cc. Take

The engine
All BMW Motorrad Roadsters are powered
by an air/oil-cooled 2-cylinder flat twin engine
with modern 4-valve technology, digital engine
electronics and fuel injection. While the
BMW R 1150 R generates a powerful torque of
98 Nm at 5,250 rpm and an output of 62.5 kW
(85 bhp) at 6,750 rpm, the BMW R 850 R delivers
an impressive torque of 77 Nm at 5,600 rpm and
an output of 52 kW (70 bhp) at 7,000 rpm.
In addition, the dual-ignition on the R 1150 R
ensures compliance with the stringent EU-2
exhaust emission standard – and enhanced
refinement with reduced fuel consumption on part
throttle. And of course, every Roadster runs with a
closed loop 3-way catalytic converter for environmental
protection – like all BMW motorcycles.

6-speed gearbox
For efficient transmission of the engine’s power to the
road, this bike has a perfectly tuned 6-speed gearbox,
with a light, precision shift action than makes moving
through the gears a particular pleasure. Sixth gear is
low, to emphasise the Roadster’s sports character, but
as an optional extra the alternative overdrive 6th gear
can be ordered instead.

The BMW Motorrad shaft drive
A typical feature of every BMW boxer motorcycle,
and a driveline concept with several advantages.
It’s a logical continuation of this engine’s frontto-back
crankshaft layout, so that the power flow
reaches the rear wheel with no losses caused by
changes of direction. And BMW’s shaft drive is
particularly reliable, long-lasting and needs only
minimum maintenance.
BMW Motorrad Telelever
Effective front wheel location is the task of the
BMW Telelever, a combination of telescopic fork and
leading link. As well as a smooth ride, the Telelever
means high dynamic stability and longitudinal rigidity,
and counteracts brake dive. The BMW Roadster
scarcely dips its nose at all when you brake – an
ideal situation for the BMW Integral ABS to operate
efficiently when needed.
EVO brake
The Roadster is fitted as standard with the new EVO brake – the
highest stage of development of the BMW Motorrad front brake.
It has two large-dimension brake discs (320 mm) and 4-piston fixed
calipers with two larger pistons each for supreme braking power,
ranging from gentle to gripping. The actuating ratio has been modified
to significantly reduce the physical force required. As compared
to conventional brake systems this translates into 20% greater breakpower
with the same lever effort applied. The partially integral version
of BMW Motorrad Integral ABS is available as an optional
extra. If this is fitted, when the brake lever is operated, the system
ensures optimum distribution of braking force between front and
rear wheels. The foot brake, meanwhile, acts only on the rear wheel.
Combined with the powerful brake servo, ABS with dynamic braking
force distribution ensures the shortest possible stopping distances.

The BMW Motorrad roadster has many faces. Sometimes
sporty, sometimes classic, sometimes touring-oriented.
Just as you want your Roadster to be. BMW Motorrad also
offers the right outfit for each individual rider type and personal
style. Sporty, laid back or classic – but always comfort
and safety combined. Developed by specialists, tested in
laboratories and on the road. Manufactured from high-quality
leather or state-of-the-art high-tech materials in BMW
C.A.R.E. quality (Concept of Advanced Rider Equipment).
Black Leather suit.
High-tech leather to keep your temperature down. The Black
Leather suit, made from extra tough nappa cowhide leather,
complies with the strict BMW Motorrad C.A.R.E. quality
standard, and features the TFL Cool System to reflect the
sun’s rays. The result is a surface temperature as much as
22 degrees Celsius lower than untreated leathers. The suit
is also fitted with CE protectors in the shoulder, back, elbow
and knee areas, with the latter being height-adjustable.
Contur Plus boot (not illustrated).
The Contur Plus boot is equipped with an inner lace system
and anatomical footbed for the perfect fit. Whether sun,
wind or rain – you can always count on the highly breathable
and waterproof GORE-TEX ® membrane.
AirFlow 3 suit (not illustrated).
Ensures you stay cool in even the hottest conditions.
Large AirTex inserts in the jacket and trousers safeguard
cool air circulation while the highly abrasion-resistant
Dynatec, removable CE pro tectors and back support ensure
a safe ride even when it is very hot. The helmet AirFlow
(not illustrated) enables you to keep a cool head in hot
situations. To ensure you have a good grip on things, the
AirFlow gloves (not illustrated) give your hands the chance
to breathe with a mixture of leather and air-permeable AirTex.
SportIntegral helmet ( not illustrated).
At high speeds, the SportIntegral helmet provides excellent
uplift and directional stability with minimum noise levels.
Other bonuses of this lightweight (approx. 1,350 g) helmet
are the sophisticated venting system, the removable inner
lining of DuPont Coolmax ® , the seamless outer shell of GRP
and the wide field of view with distortion-free and anti-fog visor.

You can take the Roadster as it comes – strong, sporty, bold and unmistakable. Or you can add your own
personal touch and make it into a truly unique bike – your bike! BMW Motorrad has a range of equipment and
accessories that satisfies just about every wish. A well-planned system, with all the items specially developed
and matched to the bike and to each other. BMW Motorrad can supply you with whatever you feel would make
the encounter with your bike into a still deeper, personal experience.
Pillion seat cover
If you’re touring solo on the Roadster you
can install this cover instead of the pillion seat.
It has space for everything you might need
for a short journey to the beach, the swimming
pool or a quick holiday: tent, groundsheet,
sleeping bag etc.
Comfort pillion seat
If you regularly ride two-up, your pillion passenger
will appreciate this comfort pillion seat with its even
more effective upholstery.
Pannier cases and holders
For when the Roadster takes you on a more extensive
tour: these large rigid-shell pannier cases hold
25 litres (left) and 31 litres (right). They don’t have
to be detached each evening either: when you
want to take your personal belongings into a hotel,
for instance, you can remove the matching inner
bags that also protect your clothes against dirt and
moisture. A practical feature for the pillion passenger:
the pannier case holder has integral handgrips.
Softcase
With a volume of 22 litres, the Softcase provides
plenty of additional carrying space. Made from tough
nylon and water-repellent, it has practical fastenings
to attach it to the luggage rack or the pillion seat.
There is also a built-in rain hood.
Speedster windshield
The small Speedster windshield is
made from scratch-resistant, splinterproof
polycarbonate material and gives the Roadster
a particular sense of sporting flair.
Luggage bridge (not illustrated)
There is a classic luggage bridge designed to match
the Roadster. Articles – or the Softcase – can be
secured to it safely with flexible cords.
Tankrucksack
A loyal and practical companion on longer journeys –
the tank rucksack has been specially developed for
the Roadster and matches the shape of the tank
perfectly. A zipper can be used to vary its height and
increase the capacity from 12 to 16 litres if needed.
The rucksack also has a large map pocket and
smaller pocket at the back.

The colour of your roadster reflects its personality – and that of its rider.
For example, deep blue metallic is cool and quietly confident, while granite
grey metallic has an elegant flair. For the purist, there’s the classical appeal
of Piemont red metallic, while the sporty two-tone finish in white aluminium
metallic and Sydney blue metallic is just right for strong characters. Ultimately,
there is no right answer – this is a decision for the heart, not the head.
The BMW Motorrad Service Card.
If you buy a new BMW motorcycle, in many countries you automatically receive
a BMW Motorrad Service Card. In the unlikely event of a breakdown it offers you
a range of services, guaranteeing your peace of mind. If you break down anywhere
in Europe all you have to do is ring one of the BMW Mobile Service experts and
it is taken care of. They are on call 24 hours a day, ready to offer you advice and
practical assistance. Services provided by the Motorrad Service Card include
Europe-wide roadside breakdown assistance, recovery and transport of the motorcycle
to the next BMW Motorrad dealer garage, taxi transfer, replacement vehicles
