Dr. Tim Hegedus
“Never underestimate what a small group of Christians
can do,” says Tim Hegedus. Tim teaches Christian scriptures
at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. Tim believes that while
the church may seem to be shrinking in numbers and in
its presence in society, many Christians are re-discovering
their spirituality and the meaning of discipleship. Tim
believes that “…the issue for many Christians today is
how to embody more just and richer relationships with
other people, particularly between men and women,
between Christians and people of other faiths, and between
heterosexual and gay and lesbian people.” As part of his
own commitment, Tim is a representative on both the
Canadian Christian Jewish Consultation and the Christian-
Muslim dialogue. For Tim, the scriptures are just as alive
today as they were for the early church. Tim sees numerous
parallels between early Christianity and the “post-Christendom”
situation facing the church today.
Bishop susan C. Johnson
Graduate, 1992
Susan Johnson is making headlines. Susan grew up in
London, Ontario and went to high school in Vancouver,
British Columbia. After graduation, Susan went into
teaching and taught music. Teaching was great and
working with students was wonderful. An accomplished
vocalist in her own right, Susan felt there was something
more that was calling her. There were a number of
pastors in her family, including her father Don, and
Susan began to consider whether ordained pastoral
ministry was her calling.
On a wing and a prayer, Susan left teaching and
traveled across the country to Waterloo Lutheran
Seminary. “Waterloo was a great place for me,” says
Susan, “It was a place where I could learn and a place
I could grow in my faith. The faculty and students helped
me hone my skills for leadership and learn about all
sorts of things I never imagined.”
Susan Johnson became Pastor Susan. She served
as a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in London and as
an assistant to the Bishop of the Eastern Synod of the
ELCIC. In September 2007, Pastor Susan became Bishop
Susan Johnson, the first woman elected to lead a national
Lutheran church in North America. “I am grateful for my
days at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. They helped me
establish a foundation for ministry and for serving
the church I love.”
Seminary isn’t just for those preparing to become ministers! Ruth Spielmann came to Waterloo Lutheran Seminary in 2000, after
working for over 20 years in Bible translation with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Her duties were changing within Wycliffe, and she
had recently accepted a part-time position in the Canadian Bible Society’s translations office in Kitchener. Ruth had previously
studied linguistics, but the move to Waterloo Region gave her the opportunity to consider a study program in biblical studies.
As a part-time student, she was able to complete the 2-year Master degree over 4 years. Reflecting on her experience at WLS,
Ruth says, “I thoroughly enjoyed the learning process, and especially the opportunity to study Hebrew and Greek. In my
current roles in assisting Bible translators world-wide, I am frequently grateful for the knowledge and skills acquired during
the program.”

Dr. Thomas st. James o’Connor
“What do I need to do to study with Tom O’Connor?”
This is a question that has led many students to study
Counselling at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary at Wilfrid
Laurier University. Tom is the Counsellor’s Counsellor.
He is a teaching supervisor with the Canadian Association
of Pastoral Practice and Education (CAPPE), a supervisor
with the Pastoral Counselling Education (PCE) and an
approved supervisor with the American Association of
Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Tom has published
numerous books and articles. His most recent book
Spirituality and Health: Multidisciplinary Explorations,
which he co-edited with Augustine Meier and Peter
VanKatwyk, reflects his passionate commitment to helping
people understand how their spirituality supports health
and well being. “Helping students to help people is what
I love doing” Tom says, “Waterloo Lutheran Seminary is
a wonderfully intimate place to develop those gifts and skills.”
Ingrid Bloos Graduate, 2000
mary marrocco
Graduate, 2007
The Master degree in Counselling at WLS was the
“perfect degree” to prepare Mary Marrocco for a career
as an accredited counsellor that would engage her
passion for theology and spirituality. Mary had already
earned five degrees including a Master of Divinity and
PhD in theology and was looking for something more.
The flexibility of the program was a strong appeal,
as it allowed her to complete the degree part-time
by commuting just one day a week from her home
in Toronto.
Mary shares that she was impressed with “the
warmth of the faculty who are always ready to listen.”
Her most rewarding learning opportunities came
from her fellow students who embraced the inclusive,
ecumenical spirit of the Seminary. The diversity of
ages and backgrounds of the students in the ten
different programs at WLS made for a vibrant,
supportive learning environment.
Mary works as a private counsellor and writer,
lectures in theology at the Toronto School of Theology,
and is Associate Secretary for Faith and Witness with
the Canadian Council of Churches. She co-ordinates
St. Mary of Egypt Refuge, a countryside refuge for
those in need.
Ingrid Bloos chose to study counselling at Laurier after spending 22 years in a family business. Waterloo Lutheran Seminary
offered a community, the professors and a curriculum that enabled her to fulfill her desire to learn the art of integrative healing.
Ingrid is a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy in private practice and has done research and
published on the role of the labyrinth in spiritual care. Ingrid credits the seminary at Laurier with “helping me understand and
develop a more life-affirming and supportive approach toward creative change.” The combination of clinical and theological
coursework gave her a greater understanding of the depth, place and significance of faith for each person. “I developed a real
sense of appreciation for the sacredness of assisting and supporting others in their process of healing.” Ingrid considered the
flexibility of the program to be a plus in attaining the Counselling degree which in turn has enabled her to pursue a rich and
meaningful therapeutic career.

WLS works in a partnership with a number
of counselling agencies in the Waterloo
role in the counselling programs offered
As an American student I was always made to feel at home at WLS.
The staff were incredibly helpful in all matters concerning visas, work
permits, bursaries, everything. The education I received was second
to none. In fact, I had such a positive experience both at the seminary
and in the churches I served as a student that I have decided to stay
in Canada for my first call. It’s been a wonderful first year at
St. Matthew’s in Hanover, Ontario.
