Annual Report - Ulster Wildlife

Ulster Wildlife Trust chairman’s foreword The number of UWT members continued to grow throughout the year. Yes, more and more people are concerned about the natural world and see supporting local environmental action as a way of contributing to protecting our natural heritage. The Ulster Wildlife Trust is a locally run conservation charity raising and spending all its own funds. Our most reliable source of income is from our members and supporters. The membership money and subscriptions enable the core operation to be run at a time where other sources of funding are often restricted to specific projects and initiatives. By supporting our work, members also give the Trust a mandate to campaign locally for a healthy environment. I would like to thank all our current members for their support and would appeal to them to spread the word about the work of UWT, and why it is important for both wildlife and people. 2006/2007 was the second year of the 2005-2008 Strategic Plan. This strategic plan identifies UWT’s Vision, Mission and Goal as outlined below. vision a naturally diverse environment, rich in native wildlife, valued by all. mission working to inspire, deliver and achieve positive action for the wildlife and habitats of Northern Ireland. goal to halt the decline in natural wildlife habitat, and rebuild local biodiversity. The plan also outlines five key objectives which direct the focus of our work for each year in the three year Strategic Plan. These objectives are – 1) To manage and re-build quality habitats 2) To make wildlife conservation relevant to people’s everyday lives 3) To influence decision makers, in all parts of our society, to take positive action for local wildlife 4) To help like-minded organisations and individuals to work towards the improvement and protection of our local environment. 5) To ensure we have the resources and systems to ensure that we can carry out our mission efficiently and effectively. This report will highlight the main areas work and achievements under each of these objectives from April 2006 to March 2007. Also in the report you will find some information on the structure, governance and management of the Trust and some key financial information for the 2006/2007 financial year. On reflection, the events during the year that stand out for me are Lagan Meadows Launch, the launch of our nature reserve at Slievenacloy and helping, along with Heather Thompson, to put an Ulster perspective into deliberations of the Royal Society for Wildlife Trusts. I wish to give my sincere thanks to the Trustees for their attendance and enthusiastic engagement and participation on Council. A special thanks to Dick Jones who retired from Council this year – he has given great service to the Trust during his many periods as Trustee, as well as being one of the Trust’s founder members.
