APU alumni are the living embodiment of their school–unique,
inspired, well-traveled and leaders in their fields. In the year
ahead, APU will reengage its dynamic alums with their school,
campus, faculty and fellow alums, as well as with the current
APU students that are following in their bold footsteps.
Heather Hansen, APU’s new Alumni Relations Coordinator,
is reinventing the way APU connects with its alumni. She’s
building a program with new opportunities, events and benefits
specifically for alumni. She’ll introduce herself and a few of
these ideas in an APU Alumni mailer, which will land in
mailboxes in early 2013.
Thiru encourages students to rethink the
power of their actions, their education and the
difference they can make in the world.
Training through service
The best kind of active learning is the kind that comes to life.
In APU’s Applied Fisheries Science Laboratory (AFSL),
undergraduates and graduate students face an intensive balance
of traditional coursework and research. Here, students gain
a better understanding of the ecology of fishery species, the
interactions of fisheries regulations on fishing communities,
and even fishing gear performance. And their efforts in
the classroom and laboratory also play a role in supporting
impactful, and sometimes groundbreaking, research at local,
state, national and international levels.
APU Assistant Professor of Marine Biology Brad Harris, Ph.D.,
calls the approach “training through service.” That’s why the
AFSL isn’t just a place that produces world-class research. It also
produces world-class scientists and managers.
A global movement starts
at the top of the world
APU Associate Professor Yaso Thiru believes energy, inspiration
and a solid business model can make lasting change on some of
the world’s toughest social, environmental and economic issues.
She’s seen it happen–in Alaska, in India and around the world.
She works to make her students believers too. Thiru encourages
students to rethink the power of their actions, their education
and the difference they can make in the world. She teaches
them about the work of social entrepreneurs. She shows them
how to create prosperity by maximizing resources and taking
advantage of opportunities.
After years of teaching and traveling, researching and writing
about the world’s social entrepreneur movement, Thiru is taking
students to India in early 2013 to witness the work firsthand in
a course she calls “Global Social Entrepreneurship and Journey
for Change”.
It’s real world experience that will make real change in the world.
That’s why the APU’s Applied Fisheries Science
laboratory isn’t just a place that produces
world-class research. It also produces
world-class scientists and managers.
