2010 MBA

YEARBOOK

An ExcEptionAl And divErsE cohort

Welcome from the Dean and

Head of School, Professor Iain

Watson

I am delighted to present UQ Business School’s 2010 MBA

Yearbook, featuring this year’s exceptional and diverse

graduating MBA students.

2010 has been a tremendous year for UQ Business School’s

MBA program. Reflecting the School’s ongoing commitment to

creating an outstanding learning environment for students, we

were recently ranked 81 overall in the world, number 1 for work

experience and number 4 for student quality by The Economist.

UQ Business School in 2009 also ranked in the top 50

worldwide for the percentage of graduates employed three

months post graduation as well as ranking 56 for student

rating of careers services.

As an alumnus, industry partner, participant or friend of UQ

Business School, we trust this book serves as a tangible

reminder of the calibre and aptitude of UQ Business School’s

MBA graduates. We commend their collective achievements

and are especially delighted to demonstrate the diversity of our

graduates’ personal, professional and cultural backgrounds.

Learning from their peers as well as our highly qualified

teaching staff, our students benefit from the MBA program’s

explicit focus on leadership development and the purposeful

networking opportunities provided by the unique Leadership

Enhancement Program.

They also benefit from UQ Business School’s focus on

developing and delivering relevant new knowledge alongside

the proven fundamentals of management education.

Our experts discover new knowledge through their research,

test it in the high pressure world of business consulting

(through our in-house consulting arm, UQ Business School

Commercial), and deliver it to our constituencies – from

students to corporate partners.

As a result, our graduates leave us with highly developed

leadership skills, an excellent understanding of contemporary

business practice, and – thanks to their exposure to the latest

research – a confident readiness for whatever the future may

hold. The Yearbook is your key to accessing this pool of talent.

Right: Professor Iain Watson

To our graduating MBA class of 2010, I extend my warmest

congratulations on this milestone occasion. We are delighted

to present you with a Yearbook that commemorates your time

at UQ Business School. As graduates, you are UQ alumni and

eligible to join the School’s Alumni Association. I encourage

you to take full advantage of our networks and ongoing

development activities.

I would also like to thank Siemens for their sponsorship of the

Yearbook and their ongoing partnership with UQ.

Enjoy our 2010 MBA Yearbook and thank you once again for

your support and I look forward to your continued involvement

with UQ Business School.

Past MBA Graduates

“I started studying the MBA to enable a career change into a more strategic, dynamic role in management

consulting. This has led into an exciting leadership role in the financial services industry. The MBA program

offered me a view on how a range of business functions interact and impact organisations enabling more holistic

analysis and decision making.

Completing the UQ Business School MBA has been of great benefit in my career through both the knowledge

gained through class delivery and interactions with other students and through the range of ongoing learning

and networking opportunities offered to alumni. Demonstrating continual investment in your own learning

and development is increasingly seen as a “ticket to play” and the MBA is a prime example”.

“I started the MBA program to enable a career change from technology management into general business

management. Completion of this course allowed me to follow my interests into a senior role overseas, in an

emerging technology joint venture, and from there into senior roles in a number of multi-national organisations.

Since returning to Australia I have been employed in sought-after roles in well respected organisations.

The MBA program provided a solid business grounding, analytical skills, as well as the experiential learning

from interacting with individuals from many countries and with a diversity of industry backgrounds. From

my experience, the MBA qualification has been a ticket to a variety of opportunities and I consider it to have

provided a more than generous return on investment”.

BRADFORD

Enthusiastic and Results driven

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE NATIONALITY/RESIDENCY

Kane Bradford is a well travelled, experienced young professional

who has spent much of his career working with elite/high performing

teams, be they athletes or academics. Kane enjoys the challenges

associated with helping these high achievers attain success and works

collaboratively to facilitate this.

An education specialist with extensive experience in leadership roles,

project management, policy development and strategic integration,

Kane is a driven, committed individual with exceptional people skills

and proven leadership capabilities.

Kane lives to be challenged and believes “persistence is the key to

success”. He is an enthusiastic worker, who is incredibly results driven,

and tackles challenging tasks and situations in a considered and

methodical way.

By way of example, as a member of the Senior English Department

at Brisbane Boys’ College (2008), Kane experienced a significant

increase in the number of concerns from the student and parent

body surrounding course delivery and the marking of senior work in

particular. As a result, he set about finding ways to understand why

the problem was occurring and why people were feeling ‘cheated’

by the system.

As a result of his investigation, he was able to prove that the department

lacked transparency in its processes. Consequently he worked with

others to produce a detailed handbook that clearly outlined the policies

and procedures, enabling visibility to this important stakeholder group

and improving relationships through engagement.

Kane enjoys working in highly motivated teams, public speaking and

thinking strategically. Over the next two years, Kane would like to focus

on more senior leadership or managerial opportunities, continuing to

help others realise potential, principles and ethics within themselves

and/or the organisation, in new and diverse environments, particularly

in transitional and fluid environments.

LEVISON

driven, Competitive, Focused and Innovative

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE NATIONALITY/RESIDENCY

Robin Levison has 30 years experience in understanding, examining

and improving organisations with a specialisation in recognising

excellence in intellectual property (IP), product design or unique

service proposition.

Robin’s key expertise is his ability to recognise and help fund the

growth and internationalisation of innovative products, IP or technology,

whether it be product- or service-based.

In his current role as Managing Director and CEO for Industrea Limited,

Robin is working towards propelling the public company into the ASX

200, which means doubling their current revenue. Industrea was

previously struggling, but Robin had a clear strategy to resurrect it, by

concentrating on equipment and services for the mining industry and

making sure the company delivered what it promised.

Since Robin took the reins, Industrea Limited has gone from being a $2

million revenue company with $19 million losses, to an ASX 300 listed

company with revenues of greater than $300 million and a reported

after tax profits of $60 million since the 2005 financial year!

“The UQ MBA helped me fashion the strategy for the growth of

Industrea and provided an important framework to hang my work

experience off” said Robin.

It is no surprise that Robin’s desire to achieve and motto that ‘nothing is

too hard’ has seen him achieve exceptional personal and professional

success, including receiving the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the

Year (Services) in 2008, participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout and –

his proudest moment – getting married.

Robin is a fellow and graduate of the Australian Institute of Company

Directors and a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered
