Letter from the Dean
Thank you for your support of the College of Law. Our progress is a product
of your commitment and our future depends on its continuation. Syracuse
University Chancellor, Dr. Nancy Cantor, has said, “Great universities have
great law schools.” This statement marks a pivotal moment for our College,
and is a challenge for all of us to work to enhance our law school and move
toward its unrealized potential. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you
about some of the great progress that is underway.

In the past three years,
we have added a total of
15 tenured or tenure-track
faculty members. These
individuals bring a wide variety
of experience to our faculty
and join in the great work of
advancing the law through
their teaching, scholarship
and service. We have also been able to honor our faculty
with named professorships, funded by generous gifts
from members of our Board of Advisors and other
distinguished alumni. This recognition is critically
important to both properly honor the outstandingly
accomplished individuals we work with and to ensure
their long-term employment here at Syracuse.

The Class of 2008 brings strong academic
credentials, diverse backgrounds, and a passion for
learning to our classrooms. We strive to maintain an
upward trend in academic accomplishment, without
losing sight of the importance of the individual qualities
that make great lawyers and professionals. Our challenge
is to attract and retain these students who will make
a difference in the College during their time as students
and throughout their professional lives. In order to
compete in the current marketplace, we must support
our students with a variety of services and provide
them with a rich and demanding academic program.
Without your help, we will not meet the goals we have
set for our College.
My hope, and my personal goal, is to ensure that each
graduate of the College—whether he or she graduated
in 1955 or 2005—has a degree that they know is an
appreciating asset. That goal will take the dedication
of all our constituencies—our current students, our staff,
our faculty, our alumni, as well as the entire University
community. An education at Syracuse University College
of Law is the beginning of a life-long relationship. I believe
we have an obligation to continue to strengthen and
enhance its reputation for the next generation of
legal professionals.
On behalf of all of us who work at our law school,
let me once again extend my sincere gratitude for your
