variety of stakeholders including community partners, the private bar, funders, donors, advisors and other legal
service organizations and will act as a roadmap to guide us in our future program planning. We welcome back
M. Stacey Hawver as she assumes the position of Executive Director once again. Stacey’s qualifications are well
known throughout the community. Our Board is excited by her renewed vision for Legal Aid, and her leadership
of our staff. The Board and I of course want to extend our thanks to the entire Legal Aid staff for their ongoing
commitment and expertise.
Like so many others, Legal Aid is experiencing funding shortfalls, and at the same time, more people need our help.
We are doing all we can to respond to a predicted 10% shortfall in budgeted revenue, some of which comes from
cities grappling with the impact of the State’s budget crisis on their own funds. Some private foundation funders who
have experienced their own reduction in assets are continuing their loyal support of our work, but at a lesser level.
Still, I believe in the powerful energy that is created when we work together, and I am confident our mutual investment
will ensure Legal Aid’s continued financial health. Throughout this report you will see instances where our neighbors’
needs were met and their lives changed, all because of the powerful energy and commitment of our staff, pro bono
attorneys, volunteers, community partners, and you. The imperative for the delivery of legal services through the
Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is stronger than ever.
