Day 5 Tuesday: Noci – Matera – Sorrento or Rome
Buffet breakfast. Departure for Matera that has gained international fame for its
“Sassi”. The Sassi originated from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement, and are
suspected to be some of the first settlements in Italy. The Sassi are houses dug into
the tuff rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia. Many of these
“houses” are really only caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are
located on the rooftops of other houses. One of the benefits of this ancient city, is
that with there is a great similarity with the ancient sites in and around Jerusalem.
This has caught the eye of film directors and movie studios. Principally due this
reason the Sassi were the set of many films, as for example “The Gospel According
to St Matthew” (Pasolini,1964), “King David” (Bruce Beresford,1985), “The Passion
of the Christ” (Gibson, 2004) and “The Nativity Story” (Hardwicke, 2006). Matera
is also a Unesco heritage. Time for a snack and return to Rome or Sorrento. End of
XVII century. Very rich and beautiful are the decorations of the church of S.Oronzo, the
Basilica of Santa Croce, the Celestini Palace. In the square of S.Oronzo we can admire
Day 3 Tuesday: Noci – Matera – Sorrento Or Rome
Buffet breakfast. Departure for Matera that has gained international fame for its
“Sassi”. The Sassi originated from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement, and are
suspected to be some of the first settlements in Italy. The Sassi are houses dug into
the tuff rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia. Many of these
“houses” are really only caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are
located on the rooftops of other houses. One of the peculiarity of this ancient city, is
that there is a great similarity with the ancient sites in and around Jerusalem. This has
caught the eye of film directors and movie studios. Principally due this reason the
Sassi were the set of many films, for example “The Gospel According to St Matthew”,
“King David” and “The Passion of the Christ”. Matera is also a Unesco heritage site.
Time for a snack and return to Rome or Sorrento. End of the tour and of our service.
BOUTIQUE TOURS
DURATION: 7 days / 6 nights
DEPARTURES: Bari Airport Private Transfer
FINISHES: Bari Airport at 10.00 am
Puglia has some of the brightest seas, most diverse art and architecture, most
mouthwatering peasant cuisine and kindest people in all of Italy. The characteristic
trullo, rural homes resembling a whitewashed teepee made of small limestone slabs
stacked without mortar, with a cone surmounted by pagan or religious symbols, are
scattered among olive groves and huge prickly pear cacti in a huddle in and around
Alberobello. Locorotondo is a round nest of a village where everything is white
except for the bright splashes of red flowers that overtake its wrought-iron balconies.
Ostuni is even more blinding, though a sea breeze caresses you as you hike up and
down its steep inclines and marvel at the sculpted baroque portals on its
whitewashed houses. But you haven’t seen Baroque in all its theatrical, indulgent,
luxuriant excess until you’ve spent a day among the wreaths of fruit and the women
sculpted on the golden limestone churches and palaces of Lecce.
Day 1: Arrival Bari Airport and private transfers D
A private transfer will be arranged from Bari airport to nearby Giovinazzo, a
delightful small town on the coast just north of Bari. You stay in a delightful hotel,
once a monastery overlooking the sea. We meet in the hotel foyer at 5pm for an
introductory talk and aperativi in the town’s delightful piazza followed by a welcome
dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Giovinazzo.
Day 2: Trani – Castel del Monte B
The Romanesque cathedral at Trani seems to rise from the sea. After a visit here
and then lunch by Trani’s pretty port we drive to Castel del Monte, a Medieval
masterpieces on the eastern coast. We know the octagonal castle was built by
Emperor Frederick II, one of the most powerful men in the Middle Ages, in the early
13th century. But nobody quite knows why. Isolated on a small hill, it lacks both the
architecture and the location for a military fort, and it’s way too imposing to be a
pleasure palace. The most evocative hypothesis is that it was an intricate symbol,
built around the magic intersection of astronomy, mathematics and the Christian
faith. Overnight Giovinazzo.
Day 3: Polignano a Mare – Martina Franca B L
Polignano al Mare is one of Puglia’s most evocative seaside towns. You stay in private
rooms and apartments, part of a bed and breakfast complex which spreads
throughout the main part of the small town. All have completely separate entrances
and private bathrooms, and are furnished in a simple, elegant characteristic style.
After settling in, and a seafood lunch overlooking the Adriatic sea, we travel to Martina
Franca, a gracious town with gems of southern Italian Spanish influenced Baroque
architecture beautifully presented in the labyrinthine streets. Overnight Giovinazzo.
Day 4: Locorotondo & Alberobello B L
Today we have only a short drive to the area of the famous Trulli, conical stone
structures originally built in dry stone which dot the landscape. At Alberobello we
see a whole town of trulli, after which we go to a wine tasting and then lunch at a
local “Masseria”. We visit the all-white town of Locorotondo in the afternoon.
Overnight Giovinazzo.
Day 5: Lecce B
Lecce is an historic Baroque city in the heart of the Salento Region of Puglia and is
often nicknamed The Florence of the South because of its abundant art and culture,
apparent in its extraordinarily elaborate Spanish Baroque cathedral and ambitious
public buildings. Overnight Giovinazzo.
Day 6: Ostuni B D
In the morning we explore the town of Ostuni, known as the “white fortress”. The
afternoon is free to enjoy the delights of Polignano. Farewell cocktails & dinner at a
restaurant in Polignano. Overnight Giovinazzo.
Day 7: Departure - Bari B
