Founded in 2001, the Petroleum Institute (PI) has established itself 

as a regional university that is dedicated to engineering education 

and research relevant to the oil & gas and broader energy industries. 

Undergraduate degrees are offered in Chemical Engineering, Electri- 

cal Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and 

Petroleum Geosciences. A new degree in the field of Materials Science is 

now proposed. Masters of Engineering degrees are offered in Chemical, 

Electrical, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering. Masters of Science 

degrees are also proposed for all programs.

Assalumu Alaikum, 

It is my pleasure to welcome H.E. Sheikh Nahayan bin 

Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and 

Scientific Research, and thank him for his kind gesture to 

witness with us today the graduation of the first group of 

students from the Petroleum Institute. It is indeed through 

his continued support and advice that this young institution 

has been able to advance with confidence. 

Since its establishment in 2000, the vision of the Petroleum 

Institute was to provide a world-class education in 

engineering and applied science. The short-term objectives 

were to meet the ever growing demand of the country’s oil 

and gas industry in general and ADNOC and its Group of 

Companies in particular for locally trained U.A.E. nationals 

in all fields of engineering. 

It is with great pride, therefore, that we are celebrating today 

the graduation of the first group of PI engineers who 

are not only capable of competing with engineers from the 

finest Colleges of Engineering in the world but who also 

have the competitive edge of knowing the economics, politics 

and technical issues concerning the domestic oil industry. 

It is upon them that the future of the industry will depend. 

No doubt , opening the doors for women enrollment 

starting from the fall 2006 will be another milestone for the 

PI’s endeavor to tap the talent of young women who comprise 

the majority of high school science graduates. 

ADNOC also looks forward for the PI to become the educational 

and research hub, serving the educational and research 

needs of the industry and its professionals. 

It is at a moment like this, when we celebrate the fruits of 

years of hard work and determined team efforts; that we 

remember our late visionary leader Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan 

Al Nahyari, who saw the youth as the real wealth of 

this country and education as the comer stone of its development. 

Our special thanks and gratitude also go to our President 

H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and to H.H. 

General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu 

Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander 

of the UAE Armed Forces, whose guidance and direction 

have been pivotal for the smooth progress of the PI. 

The Petroleum Institute is a unique enterprise that represents 

collaboration between academia and the private sector 

and has faithfully used the resources that were made available 

to it by ADNOC and international partners , namely 

BP, JODCO, Shell, and Total. There is no doubt, therefore, 

that our appreciation also goes to the senior management 

and faculty of the PI for a job well done and for our partners 

for their unwavering support to this young institution 

over the years. 

In particular , I wish to thank Dr. and Mrs. John Golden 

who since inception of the PI assumed leadership of the 

academic affairs and curriculum development. 

I also want to extend a special gratitude to the Colorado 

School of Mines for their unbridled support and generous 

care for the PI. My appreciation and recognition also 

goes to Dr. Nigel Middleton for hisdevotion and faith in 

the ability of the PI to become a cutting edge engineering 

university. 

Finally, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to 

the graduating class and wish them a prosperous future.

Yousef, Chairman of the Governing Board 

of the Petroleum Institute, honored guests, 

faculty and staff of the Petroleum Institute, 

graduates and their families, good evening 

and welcome to the 4th Commencement 

Ceremony of the Petroleum Institute. It is 

with great pleasure that I join you as we 

celebrate the achievement of the graduating 

class of 2009. It is a privilege to be a part 

of an Institution that has charged itself with 

educating the next generation of technological 

leaders in the oil/gas and the broader 

energy sector. 

Since our last commencement in January 

2009, the Petroleum Institute has continued 

its progress towards its goals which have included 

Ministry of Higher Education Institute 

approval in fall 2009 for a full five-year 

accreditation of all five Bachelor of Science 

in engineering programs, as well as initial 

accreditation for its programs in Master 

of Science and Master of Engineering. Additionally, 

the graduate program is making 

substantial progress with more than 50 

sponsored research projects and nearly 100 

graduate students working toward their 

graduate degrees in less than two years 

since graduate studies began at PI. We are 

particularly pleased to hear that in 2009 the 

faculty of the Petroleum Institute published 

more journal articles than the combined 

contribution of all other universities in the 

United Arab Emirates. 

In 2010 we look forward to ground-breaking of the 

Student Center, Conference Center, the much awaited 

PI Research Center (PIRC), and later, the construction 

of new buildings for engineering programs. 

Recently we received the approval of the Board of 

Governors to launch the new Materials Science and 

Engineering program at the PI. We are also working 

on other new degree programs at the PI, with the 

aim of serving the needs of our sponsors while establishing 

ourselves as an internationally recognized 

engineering school in fields of direct relevance to oil 

and gas and the broader energy sector. 

We welcome the upcoming research partnership 

with the University of Texas at Austin, as well as 

with Rice University in Houston. We appreciate the 

support of ADCO and other contributors for this collaboration. 

The continued progress and success achieved by the 

PI is a reflection of the vision, devotion and contributions 

of many. We thank the leadership of this country 

for the vision and support that created The Petroleum 

Institute. We are grateful to H.E. PI Chairman 

of the Board, Mr. Yousef Omeir Bin Yousef, for his 

continued dedication and endless energy toward the 

Institute, and we thank PI’s core sponsor, ADNOC 

and its operating group companies for their keen 

interest in the Institute. We also thank our four international 

sponsoring companies namely BP, JUDCO, 

Shell and Total for their financial and in-kind support 

of the Institute and recent contributions from 

other companies, including ADOC, Borealis and 

General Electric. 

We are very fortunate to be collaborating with 

world-class partner institutions such as the Colorado 

School of Mines, the University of Maryland, 

Linz and Leoben Universities and the University of 

Minnesota. The students and faculty on both sides 

are enjoying the educational and research benefits of 

these win-win collaborations and the useful contributions 

to the sponsors research needs. 

Finally, today represents a celebration for the faculty 

and staff of the Institute for their earnest interest in 

and contributions toward developing our students 

and making a difference in their lives. The Institute’s 

achievements are indeed the results of the combined 

efforts of each and every individual at PI. 

Now to the graduates. First, I congratulate you on 

your achievements. You have worked hard, put in 

a great deal of energy, have experienced significant 

growth both personally and academically to have 

now arrived at this juncture. We hope that you will 

remember the professors and all others who have 

equipped you with the core knowledge 

and skills for success in your professional 

careers. 

Second, we charge you to keep trust in God 

and the spiritual values and commit to uphold 

the highest standards of integrity and 

personal and professional code of conduct 

and practice in every aspect of your lives. 

Third, graduates, today you enter the work 

force in a country that is a role model for 

the Muslim and non-Muslim world. We 

count on your efforts to serve as role models, 

contributing in whatever way you can 

to assist the PI in its mission to establish 

itself as a regionally and internationally 

recognized engineering university. In doing 

so, you may want to keep in mind a 

quotation by the Founder of the PI, H.H. 

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, “We 

need to seek knowledge and science with 

high spirits and a strong desire to succeed 

in every field of work so that the UAE can 

accomplish greater achievements during 

the 3rd millennium.” 

Fourth, graduates, I challenge you to make 

continuing education as part of your professional 

life to keep abreast of the latest 

developments in your field. We live in a 

rapidly changing world driven by fastchanging 

technologies. As a graduate of 

the Petroleum Institute you are charged 

to serve as a job creator and opportunity 

maker for your sponsors, the UAE, and the 

greater world around you.

Tom is a successful technology innovator/developer/entre- 

preneur and investor with experience sitting on both sides 

of the boardroom table. He has over twenty-five years experience 

in communications systems, equipment, chipsets 

and software. As a General Partner at Novak Biddle Venture 

Partners, he currently sits on the boards of portfolio 

companies Centice, Paratek, Princeton Optronics, Command 

Information, Fiberzone Networks, Digital Bridge 

and Avail Media 

Tom served as Senior Vice President of Engineering at 

Hughes Network Systems before founding Telogy Networks, 

a leader in providing embedded communications 

software for wireless and IP networks, in 1990. Telogy’s 

award-winning products were proven market successes 

with world-class customers such as Cisco, Motorola, Sam- 

sung, Nortel, Alcatel and NEC. In 1998, Motorola purchased 

Telogy’s digital cellular technology and development team, 

and in 1999, Texas Instruments purchased Telogy as the 

pioneer in embedded VOIP software. Based on Telogy’s 

technology, Texas Instruments has shipped over 1 billion 

VOIP ports worldwide to date. 

Prior to joining Novak Biddle, Tom co-founded and was 

chairman of Cognio, a developer of spectrum management 

and MIMO antenna technology for wireless applications. 

Cognio was acquired by Cisco in October 2007. Tom has 

also served as a Director of Torrent Networking, acquired 

by Ericsson, and Integrated Telecom, acquired by PMC Sierra. 

In 1995, Tom was recognized as the Joseph A. Sciulli “Entrepreneur 

of the Year” by the Maryland High Technology 

Council. 

Tom has patents relating to software, the Internet, and 

digital telephone systems, and he is the author of “Packet 

Switching” in McGraw Hill’s Electronic Communications 

Handbook. He’s a member of IEEE and ACM, and he is an 

alumnus of Purdue University, and the Executive Management 

(non-degree) program at MIT Sloan School. 

The Role of Technology Innovation and 

Entrepreneurialism in Economic Expansion 

In these difficult recessionary times, recently characterized 

by government bail-outs and stimulus packages, it is 

worthwhile to consider the role of technology innovation 

and entrepreneurialism in economic expansion. Entirely 

new industries, such as the mobile phone business, have 

sprung up as the result of technology innovation. Such 

innovations are often initially under-appreciated and outright 

risky; however, when coupled with entrepreneurial 

attitudes and behaviors they can lead to success in the marketplace 

generating enormous economic wealth and job 

creation opportunities. Many of the fundamentals are the 

same regardless of the industry served. Academia can play 

a substantial role in preparing future technology leaders 

and entrepreneurs. Some example cases will be cited.

Chemical Engineering

The Chemical Engineering program at the Petroleum Insti- 

tute is designed to provide students with a rigorous educa- 

tion in the fundamentals of engineering science, and spe- 

cific training in applications of chemical engineering in the 

oil and gas industries. The program features two summer 

internships in industry which provide students with sig- 

nificant exposure to the petroleum processing industries in 

the Middle East and elsewhere in the world. 

Currently the Chemical Engineering program offers a de- 

gree program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree 

(BSc) in Chemical Engineering. The program also offers 

a degree leading to the Master of Engineering (MEng). 

Advanced studies leading to the Master of Science (MSc) 

and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees are planned for 

the future. 

The field of Chemical Engineering deals with the science 

and engineering of chemical reactions and chemical sepa- 

rations. Accordingly, the degree program begins with basic 

studies in chemistry, including organic and physical chem- 

istry, and the thermodynamic properties of fluids. The pro- 

gram continues with courses in basic chemical engineer- 

ing calculations and advanced courses in fluid mechanics, 

mass and heat transfer, and transport phenomena. Studies 

in reactor design, and petroleum refining and gas process- 

ing are important components of the program as is the use 

of computer-aided process design. The program incor- 

porates extensive laboratory work and computer process 

simulation in order to reinforce the principles and concepts 

used in the classroom.

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering Department at the Petroleum In- 

stitute is students centered with a program that is designed 

to give students a rigorous education in the fundamentals 

of the electric power, science, mechanics of instrumentation 

and control theory and specific training in applications of 

these concepts in the oil and gas industries and the broader 

energy industry. The program features a summer intern- 

ship in industry where students gain significant exposure 

to industry and real-world electrical engineering issues 

that, complements their educational experience. 

The Electrical Engineering Department at the Petroleum 

Institute offers the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Sci- 

ence, and the Master of Engineering Degrees in Electrical 

Engineering. 

The discipline of instrumentation, automation, and con- 

trols engineering is a blend of electrical engineering and 

control theory. The program couples basic studies in en- 

gineering science with fundamental studies in the areas 

of instrumentation, automation, and control engineering. 

Students take courses that include circuit analysis, micro- 

processors, digital control and industrial automation. 

The discipline of power engineering is a blend of electrical 

engineering power generation, transmission, and distribu- 

tion theory and applications. Students take courses that in- 

clude electric power systems, electric machines, and power 

electronic devices and circuits.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Program at the Petroleum 

Institute is designed to provide students with a rigorous 

education in the fundamentals of the science of engineer- 

ing mechanics and specific training in applications of me- 

chanical engineering in the broad energy industries. The 

program features an internship, through which students 

gain significant exposure to the real world of engineering, 

and it includes two semesters of capstone design courses 

in which students learn engineering research, analyses and 

design processes. 

The Petroleum Institute offers both Bachelor of Science and 

Master of Engineering degrees in Mechanical Engineering. 

The field of mechanical engineering deals with the science

Petroleum Engineering

Petroleum Engineering is related to the upstream activities in the 

exploration, development and exploitation of hydrocarbon re- 

sources. Our Petroleum Engineering Department offers a modern 

curriculum that emphasizes not only engineering fundamentals 

and practice but also an integrated approach to the applications 

of geoscientific principles, technical and business decision-making 

tools under uncertainties to minimize risks. With access to the local 

operating company facilities and our well-equipped state-of-the- 

art modern laboratories and computer facilities with the state-of- 

the-art software that industry also uses, we are uniquely positioned 

to offer a curriculum that is both well-balanced and hands on. Our 

relationship with ADNOC, its operating companies and interna- 

tional shareholder partners has been instrumental in fostering and 

developing our teaching and research program outcomes to in- 

clude competencies and needs often sought by our stakeholders. 

Our “total system approach” emphasizes the adaptability to and 

awareness of new technology; student-centered learning, real-life 

exposure through field visits, value of collaboration in a multi- 

disciplinary setting; strict attention to the environmental, health 

and safety issues; ability to communicate effectively; thriving in 

cultural diversity and being respectful of others; and last, but cer- 

tainly not least, the ability to have fun while learning. 

We offer Bachelor of Science, Master of Science by Research and 

Master of Engineering by coursework. In addition, a PhD program 

is also offered in affiliation with our partner institutions. We are 

amongst the very few Petroleum Engineering Departments in the 

world with an IWCF- accredited training and certification pro- 

gram in drilling engineering.

Petroleum Geosciences

The Petroleum Geosciences Program at the Petroleum In- 

stitute is designed to give students a rigorous education 

in the fundamentals of geology and geophysics with specific 

training in applications of geoscience in the oil and gas 

industries. The program features several field trips and a 

summer field geology course. 

The Program leads to the Bachelor of Science Degree in 

Petroleum Geosciences. Advanced studies leading to the 

M.Sc. start in spring 2010, and a Ph.D. program is planned 

for the near future. 

Students that successfully complete the Bachelor of Science 

Program will be able to enter the petroleum industry 

as petroleum geologists or petroleum geophysicists and 

have a solid educational base if they decide to continue in 

a graduate program. 

The degree program begins the second year with courses 

that cover the basic elements of the geological and geophysical 

sciences. Higher level courses include Geology of 

the Middle East, Earth Materials (mineralogy) and courses 

with students studying Petroleum Engineering including 

economics. The program continues with advanced courses 

in Structural Interpretation, Petrology, Petroleum Geophysics, 

Geostatistics, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Rock 

Properties, Petrophysics, Environmental Geology and Reflection 

Seismology. A key component of the program is 

student’s access to advanced laboratories, including computer 

laboratories where the reservoirs can be studied in 

three dimension using reflection seismic and other data in 

a virtual reality format. This greatly facilitates the understanding 

of the complexities of reservoir stratigraphy and 

relationships between reservoir geology and petroleum 

production. A project course that typically includes the 

study of problems utilizing real data from UAE reservoirs 

is offered in the final semester.
