History of The Joffrey Ballet 

Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpinos 

uniquely American vision of dance first 

took fonn in 1956. The original company 

consisted of six dynamic and highly 

individual dancers. While Joffrey stayed 

in New York to teach ballet classes and 

earn money to pay the dancers' salaries, 

Arpino led the troupe as they crossed the 

American heartland (every night a different 

venue) in a station wagon. They 

would unload the car, rosin the stage, set 

the lights, iron the costumes and prepare 

for the evening's performance. Yet what 

really set them apart was their repertoire 

of original ballets by Joffrey 

The Joffrey Ballet became the first 

American company to tour the fonner 

Soviet Union and the first dance company 

to perfonn at the White House. 

Joffrey and Arpino set trends by commissioning 

early and new ballets from Alvin 

Ailey, Laura Dean, Jiri Kylian, Mark 

Morris and Twyla Tharp, to name only a 

few. The company became known for its 

reconstructions of "lost" works from the 

early 20th century, primarily Diaghilevs 

les Ballets Russes. The company's repertoire 

spans the gamut of 20th-century 

choreography, from the cubist style to 

pre- and post-World War I Paris, to the 

Americana of the old West (DeMille's 

Rodeo and loring's Billy the Kid ), to the 

counterculture freedom of the '60s 

(Arpino's Trinity, The Clowns and Sacred 

Grove on Mount Tamalpais , and Joffreys 

Astarte) to the MTV generation 

(Billboards, with music by Prince.) 

Gerald Arpino, founder and artistic 

director 

Gerald Arpino was born in Staten 

Island, New York. He co-founded The 

Joffrey Ballet with Robert Joffrey in 1956 

and served as associate director. Upon 

Joffrey's death in 1988, Arpino succeeded 

him as artistic director. A leading dancer 

with the company in its early years, 

Arpino choreographed his first work, 

Ropes, in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he 

became the company's resident choreographer. 

To date, he has created more than 

one-third of the company's repertoire. 

His ballets are in the repertoires of companies 

around the world. Arpino is the 

Detroit Opera House 

first choreographer commissioned to create 

a ballet to honor the office of the 

American presidency; he was the first 

American commissioned by a city, San 

Antonio, to create a ballet. In 1993, he 

produced Americas first full-evening rock 

ballet, Billboards , set to the music of 

Prince. Arpino has received numerous 

awards and honors over his long and 

prestigious career. In 1995, he moved the 

Joffrey Ballet to Chicago. 

Robert Joffrey, founder 

Robert Joffrey was born in Seattle, 

Washington, in 1930 and died in New 

York City in 1988. In 1953, he established 

the Joffrey Ballet School/American 

Ballet Center. In 1956, he founded the 

Joffrey Ballet-an ensemble of American 

dancers for whom he choreographed, 

taught, commissioned original ballets 

and reconstructed rare classics. In the 

process, he built what is now acknowledged 

as one of the major international 

dance companies. Joffrey was a master 

teacher and a respected authOrity on dance. 

He was sought after worldwide as an 

adjudicator for festivals and competitions 

His legacy lives on not only in his company, 

but also in the network of ballet workshops 

he created across the country In 

2000, Robert Joffrey was inducted into 

the National Dance Museum. 

Dr. Leslie B. Dunner, music director 

& principal conductor 

leslie B. Dunner was named music 

director and principal conductor for the 

Joffrey Ballet in September 2003. Prior 

to that appointment, he was the music 

director of the Annapolis Symphony 

Orchestra, the principal conductor of 

Dance Theatre of Harlem and worked 

with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. 

The first American winner of the Arturo 

Toscanini International Conducting 

Competition, he holds a bachelors degree 

fTOm the Eastman School of Music, a 

master's degree in music theory/musicology 

from Queens College and a doctorate 

from the College-Conservatory of Music 

at the University of Cincinnati.

SYMPHONY CHOIR 

Since its founding in 1949, the 

Rackham Symphony Choir has provided 

talented vocalists and audiences of 

Metropolitan Detroit with the opportunity 

to experience and perform choral 

music or the highest artistic quality 

Detroit's oldest choral organization, RSC 

enhances the cultural richness of the 

community through its commitment to 

offering choral performances, student 

outreach programs and benefit concerts 

for community-based charitable agencies. 

One example of outreach with local 

music programs is the annual Too Hot to 

Handel which, for the past two years, 

has included members of Marygrove 

College Chorale. 

Under the visionary leadership of 

Suzanne Mallare Acton, Critically 

acclaimed conductor and RSCs artistic 

and musical director, the choir has 

expanded its rich tradition of musical 

performance. Concerts of note include 

Richard Einhorns Voices oj Light; the 

moving Yizkor ReqLliem, performed by 

composer Thomas Beveridge; and The 

Reluctant Dragon, replete with life-size 

puppets. The latter production tours 

schools and communities throughout 

southeastern Michigan. 

In March 2005, the choir will perrorm 

the Midwest debut of the Holocaust 

Cantata by Donald McCullough.

DAYTON CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY 

QUEALA CLANCY is a Fonner dancer wi th 

DCDC2 and is beginning her fourth season wi th 

DCDC She is a graduate of Wright State University 

and studied at the Civic Light Opera Academy fo r 

Musical Theatre. A native of PiLLsburgh, 

Pennsylvania, she is a jazz instructor for jeraldynes 

School of the Dance and DCDC2 . 

AUSE CRAIG is a native of Cleveland, Ohio and is 

beginning her first season with DCDC as an apprentice. 

She is a senior dance major at Wright State 

University and is completing her fiIlal year of 

requirements in this newly fonned collaboration 

between DCDC and Wright State. Ms. Craig began 

her dance training at the Michael j. Zone Recreation 

Center and the Cleveland School for the Arts. She 

also studied with the Cleveland San jose Ballet and 

is the recipient of Augsburg, DCDC2, and Paul 

Laurence Dunbar scholarships. 

RICARDO J. GARCIA CRUZ was born in 

Mayaquez, Puerto Rico , and has been performing 

with DCDC for seven seasons. He is a grad uate of 

Point Park College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and 

slLld ied flamenco with Maria Benitez at the Spanish 

Dance Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He currently 

teaches dance at South Dayton School of 

Dance and is a guest perfonner wi th the Illinois 

Ballet, Pemia Ballet, Charleston Ballet and South 

Dayton Dance Theatre. 

G.D. HARRIS is in his 13th season with DCDC A 

native of Manhasset, New York , he grew up in St. 

Albans, Queens, and graduated cum laude with a 

B.FA. in dance from The Ohio State University He 

also studied at the Alvin Ailey American Dance 

Center. Mr. Harris teaches dance classes for DCDC2, 

j eraldynes School of the Dance, and is rehearsal 

coach for DCDC 

CRYSTAL MICHELLE grew up in Augusta, Georgia, 

and received her B.FA. in dance Performance from 

Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Ms. 

Fu ller trained with the Augusta Ballet School, the 

jofIrey School of Ballet and the Alvin Ailey American 

Dance Center. She is a dance instructor for jeraldynes 

School of the Dance, Colonel White High School for 

the Arts and jefferson Township Schools. Ms. Fuller, 

a fonner DCDC2 member, is beginning her third 

season ,vith DCDC 

WILLIAM B. MCCLELLAN JR. is from Chicago, 

Illinois and received his B. FA. in Dance from the 

University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He is 

in his third season with DCDC Mr. McClellan is a 

founding member of CounterGroove Dance Company 

and an adjunct dance instructor at Oakland 

University in Rochester, Michigan. Mr. McClellan 

teaches master classes throughout the Detroit, 

Michigan area and has choreographed work for 

DCDC2. 

JAYSIN MCCOLWM joins DC DC from the 

Cincinnati Ballet for his first season. A native of 

CinCinnati, Ohio, he attended the School for 

Creative and Performing Arts and received scholarships 

to study at the American Ballet Theatre, 

Boston Ballet, Hanford Ballet and the Alvin Ailey 

American Dance Center. He is a former dancer with 

the North Carolina Dance Theatre and the 

Chautauqua Ballet.

ALVIN J. RANGEL is a fornler DCDC dancer of six 

years, making a special appearance with the company 

in On the Wings oj Angels. A native of Ponce, Pueno 

Rico, he attended the Inter American University and 

the University of Cincinnati , where he studied 

dance. He taught dance at Stivers School for the 

Arts, jeraldynes School of the Dance and DCDC2. 

Mr. Rangel is a fitness trainer certified by the 

National Dance and Exercise and Instruction 

Training Association. 

NABACHWA SSENSALO is in her fourth season 

,vith DCDC Born in Chico, California, she received 

her BA in Economics from Occidental College in 

Los Angeles, Californi a. She trained with and is a 

featured guest artist with the Lulu Washington 

Dance Theatre. Ms. Ssensalo has also studied at the 

Alvin Ailey Dance Center, Dance Theatre of Harlem 

and Stefan Wentas Dance Studio. 

SHERI "SPARKLE" WIWAMS has been performi 

ng with DCDC for an unprecedented 31 

seasons. A native Daytonian, Ms. Williams is also a 

member of the ew York-based dance company 

Complexions: A Concept in Dance. She has received 

numerous awards throughout her career, including a 

Bessie Award (New York Dance and Performance 

Award), ajOSIE Award, Lifetime Achievement Award 

from the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural 

District; in 2002, she was inducted into the Phi 

Theta Kappa International Honor Society IlJ

"Labess" is a Tunisian expression meaning that in 

the face of all we must confront in life each day, "Its 

all right. . .I'm okay" The piece is drawn from a simple 

place, a joyous place and a celebration of selfacceptance. 

Built in four sections with an ensemble 

of seven dancers, one woman carries a thread 

throughout - leading, follOwing and opening the 

space. 

This ballet is part of a larger work entitled On the 

SllOulders oj Our Ancestors. It was made possible by 

generous grants from Philip Morris New Works 

Fund, sponsored by Philip MOlTis Companies, Inc.

In March 2004, Michigan Opera Theatre met the 

final benchmark for the Touch the Future campaign! 

As a result, $300,000 in matching funds was placed 

into MOTs endowment at the Community 

Foundation for Southeastern Michigan. After this 

initial award, another $390,000 in bonus pool 

matching funds was added to that endowment.

The Department of Community 

Programs is a year-round operation 

that tours performances; produces a 

cable television series; arranges work 

shops for schools and colleges and pro 

vides lectures on a wide variety of arts 

and humanities topics. The department 

provides opportunities for people to 

create, perform and attend events. The 

department also created and manages 

LEARNING AT THE OPERA HOUSE - 

a summer institute for all ages held 

right here in the Detroit Opera House. 

Every year, thousands of people of 

all ages are touched by the outreach 

offerings of this department whose 

motto is, "To foster future creators, per 

formers, consumers and supporters of 

any age."

Michigan Curriculum Framework 

content Standards 

Michigan Opera Theatres School performances follow the Michigan 

Curriculum Framework Content Standards and Benchmarks. 

This year we are touring The Night Harry Stopped Smoking, No Doubt and 

The Araboolies of Liberty Street, an opera for children , based on a book of the 

same name, written by Sam Swope. The Araboolies is on the suggested reading 

list of the Social Studies 

Department of the Michigan 

State Department of 

Education. This one-act children's 

opera tells a humorous 

and endearing story of diversity 

and tolerance. 

The Night Harry Stopped 

Smoking fits neatly into the 

science and health curricula 

and draws attention to substance 

abuse. Middle and High 

School Students will also 

receive an additional boost in 

Social Studies with the newly

created No Doubt. In honor of 

Michigan Opera Theatre's newly commissioned opera, Margaret Gamer, 

No Doubi brings the rich legacy of African-American experience to life. 

Elementary and middle schools may enjoy producing a short one-act "opera" 

about the Underground Railroad in Michigan. This 20 minute long piece, 

Vigilance was composed by Karen V DiChiera, (founder and director of the 

department of community programs), to a libretto by Joan Hill. It was created 

for elementary and middle school children to perform as part of an assembly 

program. B

The Artists of Community Programs are seasoned profeSSionals who are committed 

to the value of performing for young people. In fact, many have devoted 

their adult professional lives to Arts Education. They have spent many years 

touring throughout Michigan and other states working with school districts, 

administrators, teachers and students, having performed in every county in our 

state, at one time or another. B

cameras and recording devices are not allowed inside the lobby or 

theater at any time. The taking of photographs of the theater or any 

performance is strictly prohibited. As a courtesy to our guests, we 

ask that all paging devices, cell phones and alarm watches be 

switched to silent mode prior to the stan of a performance. 

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Doctors and parents are advised to 

leave their seat location (located on ticket) and our emergency 

number, (313) 237-3257, with the service or sitter in case of an 

emergency Please observe the lighted exit signs located throughout 

the theater. In the event of fire or similar emergency, please remain 

calm and walk - do not run - to the nearest exit. Our ushers are 

trained to lead you out of the building safely A trained Emergency 

Medical Technician (EMT) is onsite during most events. Please see 

an usher or staff member to contact the EMT. 

RESTROOMS Ladies' restrooms are located off the Ford Lobby 

(Broadway street entrance), down the stairs and also on the third 

floor (Madison street entrance) - please press "3R" on the elevator 

to reach this faCility Gentlemen's restrooms are located under the 

Grand Staircase and also on the third floor (Broadway street 

entrance) - please press "3" on the elevator to reach this faCility 

Please note: All third-floor restrooms are wheelchair accessible.

NO SMOKING The Detroit Opera House is a smoke-free facility 

Ash receptacles are provided on the exterior of all entry doors for 

those who wish to smoke. 

USHERS Ushers are stationed at the top of each aisle. If you 

have a question or concern, please inform ushers, and they will 

contact management. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer 

usher, please call the usher hotline at (313) 237-3253. 

LATE SEAnNG Latecomers will be seated only during an appropriate 

pause in the program and may view the program on the 

closed-circuit television monitor located in the Ford lobby until an 

appropriate program pause occurs. Late seating poliCies are at the 

discretion of the production, not opera house management. 

LOST & FOUND Lost and Found is located in the Security 

Department. Please see an usher if you have misplaced an article, 

or call (313) 961-3500 if you have already left the theater. Items 

will be held in Lost and Found for 30 days. 

PARKING Parking for all events is available in the Opera House 

Garage, located directly across from the Detroit Opera House (on 

John R. and Broadway streets). Prepaid parking is available 

through the box office. Please call (313) 237-SING for parking 

information. 

ACCESSIBIUTY Accessible seating locations for patrons in 

wheelchairs are located in all price ranges on the orchestra level. 

When inquiring about tickets, please ask about these locations if 

you require speCial accommodations. 

Assisted Listening Devices are available on a first-come, firstserved 

basis. Please see an usher to request this service. Although 

this is a complimentary service, we will request to hold a piece of 

personal identification while you are using the device. Please contact 

the Box Office, should you desire speCial consideration. 

CHILDREN Children are welcome; however, all guests are 

reqUired to hold a ticket, regardless of age. We kindly ask that 

parental discretion be exercised for certain programs, and that 

all guests remember that during a program such as opera or ballet, 

the ability of all audience members to hear the music is a prerequisite 

to enjoyment of the performance. In all cases, babes in arms 

are not pennitted. 

SERVICES Concession stands are located on all levels. Please 

note that food and drinks are not allowed in the auditorium at 

any time. Coat check is located in the Ford Lobby The cost is 

$1.00 per coat. Please note that the Detroit Opera House does not 

accept responsibility for any personal articles that are not checked 

at the coat check. Drinking fountains are located in the lobbies 

on floors one and three. Public pay phones are located in the 

vestibule of the Ford Lobby Patrons in wheelchairs can access pay 

phones outside the third-floor ladies' restrooms.

through the first intermission of the evening's performance, except

hours prior to curtain. Tickets for all public events held at the

This wmX, which had its premiere in spring of 1996, was innnediately hailed by audiences and critics alike as a fitting tribute 

to the wartime efforts of the Tuskegee Allmon. The Tuskegee Airmen were African-Americans who received their flight 

training .It an airbase in Alabama as preparation for their service to their country in time of war. Although these men met 

hardslrips and obs1llcles placed in their paths by a IIl¢ist mili1llry syatem, the "Red Tails", their niclmame, distinguished 

themselves with honor in WWIT. Sir Warren has crafted a wolk that follows the men from their early trsining to the time they 

become airborne, never 1iterally, but ahnost impressionistically. Along the way, he shows us the intense camaraderie that 

developed as these men faced enemies on two fronts - at home and overseas. Using gestures of saluting, pointing to the skies 

and pledging their hearts, Sir Warren, neatly sums up the tremendous dedication, patriotism and accomplishment of African
