City of London Business Traineeship Programme Profile of <strong>2012</strong> Winners Employer of the Year Kiln Group Kiln Group has welcomed interns from the City of London Business Traineeship Programme for four years. As a company that has been in business for more than 50 years and which has a good track record of engaging and developing its people, we recognise the value of strong talent and have benefitted enormously from the relationship. Through the programme we have met some exceptional individuals, many of whom have been invited back to different parts of the business in subsequent years. From the outset we have been impressed by the intellect, motivation and attitude demonstrated by our interns. They have integrated extremely well into their departments and have consistently delivered beyond our expectations. They are in demand! Our Intern Programme is an important part of our Corporate and Social Responsibility Programme which seeks to support our local community and nurture talented people for the future. We have just welcomed back our very first intern for the fourth year running and hope that she will apply for our graduate programme next year. As a business, what we do matters. Our interns have made a real difference to our business, and we hope that we have made a difference to them. We are delighted to receive the Employer of the Year award and look forward to welcoming a new group of interns to Kiln next year. Charles Franks Group Chief Executive Officer Kiln Group 2 EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR PROJECT CHAMPION EMPLOYER NEWCOMER The awards for the City of London Business Traineeship Programme are adjudicated by senior professionals from independent City firms Project Champion of the Year ING I am delighted that Samantha Nedrick of ING has been named Project Champion of the Year. ING has had links with the Brokerage for many years and we are proud to have established our internship programme with them. The programme provides an opportunity for young people to connect with and gain experience of the City and the broader world of financial institutions. From the feedback received, our interns have developed both personally and professionally, gaining confidence in their abilities that will support them in the future, irrespective of where their careers take them. Many people inside ING have supported the students and I would like to thank them for their support, enthusiasm and encouragement. Without their dedication the programme would not have been successful. My congratulations go to Samantha and to Kayda Ismail, who nominated her, on her personal development during her internship with us. Mark Staniforth UK Head of Human Resources Employer Newcomer of the Year QBE QBE European Operations is delighted to support this valuable, mutually rewarding programme and honoured to receive the Employer Newcomer of the Year Award. The role that the Brokerage played in helping deliver the scheme and the time it took to get to know us in our first year of involvement was invaluable. This year we took two trainees within our Legal department who were fantastic ambassadors for the programme and we are keen to continue to support and mentor these talented students throughout their further legal training.
TRAINEE OF THE YEAR Trainee of the Year Shermeen Begum Shermeen attended The Grey Coat Hospital School in Westminster and completed A’ levels in History, English and Government and Politics. She was interested in gaining an internship which would enhance her future career prospects, particularly in Human Resources. After a successful interview process with Michael Page Shermeen was offered a placement starting in July. She spent a large part of her time undertaking various project work set by the Director and Managing Director of the business. Shermeen’s manager said, “Shermeen has been a true asset to our team this summer. It is rare that you see an Intern with the amount of enthusiasm and positivity that Shermeen has brought to this role. I know that Shermeen would have the capability to do this in any business and I think that that is her truly unique and remarkable Such was the positive feedback received from colleagues within our business on both the value of this programme and the calibre of the trainees who worked with us, that we are looking to extend and grow our involvement in the CBT. We wish Rumel and Belinda, who worked with us, and all the students involved in the scheme every success in the future. David Winkett Chief Financial and Operating Officer City of London Business Traineeship Programme quality as she has the ability to always meet high standards and consistently exceed them in any workplace”. Shermeen will be going to Royal Holloway this year to study History and we wish her all the best! Highly Commended Trainee of the Year Abigail Holsborough Abigail recently completed A’ Levels in Mathematics, Economics and English Literature, gaining an A*, A*, and A respectively. After UBS’s interview process, Abigail was recruited into Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities (FICC). Abigail said “the biggest thing I gained from this placement was a strong foundation of knowledge both generally about the industry and working within an investment bank”. HIGHLY COMMENDED TRAINEE UBS said, “Abigail was able to bring a fresh approach and has produced useful work. She ran education classes for other interns and built a good network across the bank, she impressed everyone she met.” Well done Abigail, we wish you all the best with your time at Cambridge University. 3
