City of London Business Traineeship Programme Case studies of participating trainees Abdul Khan Michael Page The culture at Michael Page International is superb, and it’s one that really suits me, everyone I’ve worked with has been so helpful and I’m so glad I was able to spend 8 weeks of my summer with people who are extremely hardworking, excellent mentors and most importantly have good sense of humour! I’ve learnt the importance of organisational skills, the ability to cope with a large workload, and doing the job well. I’m now able to prioritise effectively, and able to stick to a timetable so that I can meet deadlines. I’m off to read law at university in October this year. Working with people that recruit lawyers, from qualified to partner level, has given me a real insight into how to get into a top law firm as a trainee. Kayda Ismajli ING During my internship, one of my main roles has been to be the test coordinator for a major project which my team were involved in. I was given great responsibility, which has enabled me to gain new skills such as decision making, project management & task prioritisation. I also developed my pre-existing skills. As I study for a degree in the evenings and work full-time during the day I have learnt to become more organised and manage my time more efficiently. I have got used to being extremely busy and working in stressful situations. It has been great working at ING. 4 Deniz Kucukterzi Canopius Through the CBT programme I gained in confidence and increased my knowledge of IT in the business environment. I hope to get into the field of computer science, so gaining work experience in IT before having even started university has been like finding a diamond. I have updated my CV, have real experience I can take with me and was able to land myself a full-time entry-level IT/software development job for my gap year. I think that if it wasn’t for the experience and confidence I gained from my placement, I may not have got my gap year job so easily. Rumel Miah QBE The placement was organised extremely well. I was handed an intern diary with all the key dates and events highlighted throughout my 6 week internship. I was also allowed to rotate around the various teams at QBE such as HR, Internal Audit and Company Secretarial which gave me a good overview of QBE as a company. As QBE is also primarily an insurance firm, I was taken on a tour of the Lloyd’s of London insurance market which really helped me understand how the company makes its money. The whole experience has been amazing!
Darren Tenkorang Kiln What I think was unique about my placement is that I was given the opportunity almost to plan what I did. My line manager equipped me with the instruments needed to get the given task done and Kiln handed me responsibility which kept me engaged and wanting to go to work in the morning. An overall objective was set but the road to achieving the goal was constructed by me with guidance from my line manager. I constantly had the opportunity to gain an insight on other aspects of the business due to the friendly nature of the staff. In fact I was offered an extension to work for the Risk Management team, an aspect of insurance I am particularly interested in. Liam Boylan Hampden Before the placement, I wanted to be a lawyer, but my time at Hampden has shown me another side of the legal profession. A meeting was arranged for me with Hampden’s in-house legal consultant who was very helpful in both giving me advice and discussing the work she does. The experience as a whole has widened my mind in that it’s made me realise that there are a host of legal paths I could follow, not just the more traditional barrister or solicitor route. It has made me think seriously about taking some modules in my law course at university to do with law and the economy, or law and financial regulation. Tosin Famegbe Lloyd’s City of London Business Traineeship Programme Farhana Shahid Société Générale I have absolutely loved my placement! My team, the bank, the people, and the atmosphere have all been amazing. I couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity as an eye opener to working City life. The knowledge I have gained from my placement is invaluable. I was placed in the Corporate Responsibility department, which prior to applying for the position did not know existed. The skills and information I gained from workshops the HR team provided, including CV, interview and presentation workshops will equip me throughout my career and help me develop as a successful individual. SG has been amazing to us all. The placement has already had a great impact on my future; as a result of this internship I have accepted an offer from Grant Thornton to be an audit accountant trainee. Working at Lloyd’s has reiterated my practical side and pushed me to accept the offer. I enjoy working and learning simultaneously and I feel prepared for work now as a result of this internship. Working here has allowed me to network with people across the corporation and also people that do not work at Lloyd’s; I was given good advice by many people. 5
