The School
The Frankfurt International School (FIS) was established in 1961
as a non-profit association to serve the international community
in the greater Rhein-Main region by offering education of an
excellent quality with English as the principal language of
instruction. The school is governed by a Board of Trustees and is
accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). FIS is
made up of three campuses including: The Oberursel Hohemark
Campus (Early Years Age 3 to Grade 1), the Oberursel Waldlust
Campus (Elementary School Grades 2-5 and Upper School
Grades 6-12), and the Wiesbaden Campus (Early Years Age 3 to
Grade 5). All three campuses have experienced international
faculty (American 32%, British 29%, German 18%, Australian
4%, Canadian 4%, and 16 other nationalities 13%) and offer, in
addition to the core academic program, specialist services in
counseling, English as a Second Language, and learning support.
There is also an extra-curricular program, and computing and
instructional technology are an integral part of the school. The
facilities at all campuses are excellent and provide outstanding
resources for learning.
The Students
The total enrollment of the three FIS campuses is 1770 students.
The student body as a whole represents 53 nationalities with
the largest numbers identifying themselves as American 30%,
German 19%, South Korean 11%, British 9%, Dutch 5%, and
Japanese and Swedish 3% each. Of the 510 students currently
enrolled in the Upper School Grades 9-12, the normal high school
years, 25% identify themselves as American, 24% as German, 11%
as Korean, 9% as British, 5% as Japanese, 3% as Dutch, and 2% as
Swedish. The remaining 21% represent 38 other nationalities or
combinations of nationalities.
The Upper School Grade 9-12 High School Program
The school offers curriculums leading to the awarding of the
school High School Diploma and the International Baccalaureate
(IB) Diploma. In addition, students in the entire Upper School
6-12 are expected to complete CAS (Creativity, Action, and
Service) requirements.
The High School Diploma: All students who gain at least 24 credits
during their Grades 9-12 studies earn the High School Diploma.
Students earn one or one-half credit for successfully completing
one year of a given course. These credits are distributed as
follows: English (4), Mathematics (3), Non-English languages (2),
Humanities (3), and Experimental Sciences (3), Physical Education
and Health (1), and Electives (8). Students in grade 9 and 10 follow
core programs combined with electives. The only accelerated
tracked subject in Grades 9 and 10 is Mathematics. In Grades
11 and 12, students either take the International Baccalaureate
Diploma Programme or a challenging mixture of IB and non-
IB courses. Students who enter FIS after Grade 9 must have
met the minimum yearly credit requirement of their previous
school and then complete at least six credits per year while at
FIS in order to graduate and receive the High School Diploma.
Additional requirements for graduation are: the completion of
an interdisciplinary personal project in Grade 9, a 2000 word
research essay in Grade 10, and all CAS requirements.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma: The IB Diploma
Programme (IBDP) is a rigorous university preparatory
curriculum. It is not based on the curriculum of any particular
country but rather it incorporates the best elements of
many. With a comprehensive and balanced curriculum and
challenging assessment criteria, it demands intellectual rigor
and high academic standards. It places emphasis on the ideal
of promoting international awareness and understanding
and aims to produce students who are passionate and critical
thinkers, life-long learners, and informed participants in local
and international affairs. Students study six subjects for two
years, all of which are externally examined, with some internal
assessment projects being counted towards the final grade in
each course. Normally, three subjects are studied at High Level
and three at Standard Level. However, highly motivated and able
students are allowed to take four Highs with special approval.
In addition to the six Diploma courses, students are expected
to complete the Extended Essay - a 4000 word project based
on independent research, the Theory of Knowledge seminar
course, and CAS involvement. Students who are not involved in
the IBDP may take individual courses and examinations and earn
IB Certificates. IB High and Standard courses are often equivalent
to university and college level curriculums and should therefore
be given consideration for advanced placement.
CAS: The school requires all Upper School students in Grades
6-12 to participate in CAS (Creativity, Action, and Service) related
activities. Students in Grades 6-8 are required to join activities
and to learn how to use their time to be productive and make
a difference. In Grades 9-10, students are expected to complete
a minimum of 50 hours per year of high level and balanced
involvement in a range of activities. In Grades 11-12, students
must complete a minimum of 75 hours per year. Most FIS
students complete many times over the minimum requirement.
