INTRODUCTION At the

INTRODUCTION At the request of Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation (FCDPR), Dovetail Cultural Resource Group, I Inc. (Dovetail) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the 26 acre Rappahannock Landing project area located in Fauquier County, Virginia (Figure 1). An easement with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is being placed on the property and as such, the FCDPR requested an archaeological survey be conducted to identify archaeological remains within the defined easement boundaries, especially those that may be related to the Civil War activities in the area. The planned easement is being placed on a total of approximately 26 acres and is located within the established battlefield boundaries of Rappahannock Station I and II (023-5049 and 023-5050) and Brandy Station (023-5055). Plans for the current project area include the creation of a public park to be used as a recreational area for local residents. The goals of the current survey were to identify any archaeological remains and to make recommendations on the need for any additional subsurface investigations. In 2006 Dovetail conducted a survey on the adjoining 23 acre parcel which was sold to a private construction company for the development of a residential neighborhood. The FCDPR included the completion of an archaeological survey as part of the real estate transaction between themselves and the purchaser. The goals of this survey were based on this agreement—to complete archival research on the Battle of Rappahannock Station, to identify any archaeological remains associated with the battle, and to make recommendations on the need for any additional subsurface investigations. The current archaeological survey was conducted from August 11 th through September 3 rd 2008. The work was conducted by Kerry Schamel-González, Michael Carmody, Kristen Bloss, Marco González, Greg Harmon, Bryce Stanley, and Jason Chambers with Kerry Schamel-González serving as Principal Investigator. Both Mr. Carmody and Mrs. Schamel-González meet or exceed the standards established for archaeologist by the Secretary of the Interior.
