City/County: Fauquier SITE CONDITION/SURVEY DESCRIPTION Site 375 feet by 325 feet Acreage: 2.80 Survey Strategy: Subsurface Testing Metal Detection Site Condition: No Surface Deposits but With Subsurface Integrity Threats to Resource: Development Survey Description: Site 44FQ0247 is a multi-component site representing a mid-late nineteenth century historic site possibly affiliated with the Civil War occupation of the area and a prehistoric site with an indeterminate temporal affiliation. This site is situated in the open field on the southeast facing slope of the primary terrace of the Rappahannock River located between 280 feet to 270 feet AMSL. It measures approximately 375 feet north-south x 325 feet east-west and comprises approximately 2.8 acres. Shovel tests were excavated at 50 foot intervals across the site. This site boundary was determined by negative shovel tests on all sides. Yes Specimens Depository: Dovetail Cultural Resource Group Assemblage Description: The prehistoric assemblage includes two biface fragments, 12 secondary flakes, 2 tertiary flake, and 6 angular debris fragments. Lithics are generally made from locally obtainable quartz and quartzite although one chert flake was also identified. The historic assemblage contains a total of 4 3-ring Minnie balls, one of which had a Swage machine mark at the base. A Swage mark is made by a specific machine type that leaves a star like impression in the base of the bullet. All Minnie balls showed evidence of being fired but only one had clearly impacted an object. In addition, a corroded flat circular metal item, 3 aqua glass bottle fragments, 6 machine cut nails (1840–1890), 1 wire nail, 1 unidentified nail fragment, scissors, a horse shoe, an iron spike,2 burned animal bone fragments, and 1 possible piece of horse tack were recovered from the site.
