City/County: Fauquier SITE CONDITION/SURVEY DESCRIPTION Site 625 feet by 325 feet Acreage: 4.60 Survey Strategy: Subsurface Testing Metal Detection Site Condition: Subsurface Integrity Surface Deposits Threats to Resource: Development Survey Description: Site 44FQ0248 is a multi-component site located in the southern portion of the project area in an open field and is mostly situated in the flood plain of the Rappahannock River. This site measures approximately 625 feet southwest-northeast by 325 feet northwest-southeast and comprises approximately 4.6 acres. Site 44FQ9993 almost entirely encompasses the southwestern half of the project area and is located in a fallow field of tall grass and briars. A small wooded patch of some larger mature trees is found in the southern portion of this site. This small wooded patch also contained large push pile mounds of earth, vegetation, and cow skeletons. This site is situated on a relatively flat, flood plain along an oxbow in the Rappahannock River at approximately 262 feet AMSL. Shovel tests were excavated at 50 foot intervals across the site. The site boundary was determined by negative shovel tests and the Rappahannock River. SPECIMENS, FIELDNOTES, DEPOSITORIES Specimens Obtained? Yes Specimens Depository: Dovetail Cultural Resource Group Assemblage Description: A total of 305 artifacts was recovered from 99 STPs and four metal detector hits within the site boundary. Historic artifact assemblage comprised 70.8 percent (n=216) of the artifact assemblage. This assemblage included architectural debris (nails, slate, and window glass), ceramics, bottle glass, various metal fragments, and personal items. The prehistoric artifact assemblage comprised 29 percent (n=89) of the total artifact assemblage. This assemblage includes 1 biface/tool, 1 core fragment, 1 groundstone, 74 lithic debitage, and 12 Native American pottery sherds. Lithics are generally made from locally obtainable quartz and quartzite although several flakes were identified as chert, greenstone, and rhyolite. Specimens Reported?
