PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 26 acre Rappahannock Landing project area is situated on elevated terraces and flood plain areas associated with the Rappahannock River, approximately 0.5 miles southwest of downtown Remington, Virginia. The property is bounded on the east by a defined DHR easement boundary, on the south by property lines and the Rappahannock River, on the west by a fence line and Route 29, and on the north by a subdivision. The area to the northeast is slated for development but at this time the field remains fallow and undeveloped (Figure 2). The project area is in an open field with an abandoned farm complex located just outside the project boundaries. A farm house associated with the farm complex is situated in the eastern portion of the project area. Currently the home is boarded up and no longer inhabited. A gentle rolling topography dominates this parcel, and it ranges in elevation from 280 feet above mean sea level (AMSL) to 300 feet (AMSL) (Photo 1–Photo 4, pp. 3–4). The entire 26 acres were inspected through surface reconnaissance and shovel test pits, augmented by a metal detector survey. Shovel test pits (STPs) were excavated in all areas except where standing water or where excessive slope precluded testing.
