City/County: Fauquier Site 200 feet by 350 feet Acreage: 1.90 Survey Strategy: Subsurface Testing Metal Detection Site Condition: Unknown Portion of Site Destroyed Threats to Resource: Development Survey Description: Site 44CU0249 is a multi-component site dating to the mid-late nineteenth century through the early-twentieth century with an indeterminate prehistoric occupation. The site is situated in the yard immediately south and east of a standing house located in the project area. This site measures roughly 200 feet north-south x 350 feet east-west and comprises approximately 1.95 acres at 320 feet AMSL. The Rappahannock River lies approximately 375 feet to the southwest of the site. The site is primarily located in an open field with scattered trees and secondary growth. Shovel tests were excavated at 50 foot intervals across the site. This site is bound by negative shovel tests on the north, east, and west, and by the project area boundary to the south. CURRENT LAND USE Land Use: Domestic Example: Dwelling, single Dates of Use: 2008/10/99 Comments/Remarks: Currently the area surrounds an abandoned house and farm complex. SPECIMENS, FIELDNOTES, DEPOSITORIES Specimens Obtained? Yes Specimens Depository: Dovetail Cultural Resource Group Assemblage Description: The artifact assemblage includes a total of 72 artifacts, of which 67 were historic and 5 were prehistoric. It is likely that this site is associated with the historic occupation of the house located immediately to the north and west given that the home was likely constructed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The majority of artifacts recovered, 40 percent, were architectural (n=29). This includes 4 cut nails (1840–1890), 17 wire nails (1890–present), and 8 post-Industrial window glass fragments all of which are likely related to the occupation of the house. However, some of the materials recovered a greater distance from the home may be related to nearby fences and sheds. Bottle and container glass (n=21) were also found throughout the site, comprising nearly 30 percent of the artifacts recovered. Ceramics (n=9) recovered include six whiteware (1820–1900), one porcelain, one porcellaneous (1820–present), and one Ginger beer bottle fragment (1835–1900). Animal bone (n=6) and one metal ball bearing were also found. A Civil War-era bullet, which has been modified into a fishing weight, was recovered immediately behind the house. It is not uncommon to find bullets whittled as the lead was very malleable. Its modification into a fishing weight and the proximity to a water source makes a convincing argument that a soldier intended to use this item and was not just modified to pass the time. In addition to the historic artifacts, a light lithic scatter was recorded which contained 2 quartz angular debris, 1 greenstone primary flake, and 1 quartzite and 1 chert secondary flake were found within the site.
