ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING The project area is located in Fauquier County, approximately 13.4 miles southeast of Warrenton. Fauquier County is situated in the Northern Virginia cultural area. Fauquier County can be divided into three major geologic and physiographic regions, the Coastal Plain, Piedmont Uplands, and Triassic Basin, which extend east to west respectively across the county. The current project area is situated in the Piedmont Uplands portion of the county. Fauquier County is a region that has historically been rural but is experiencing growth due to its proximity to Washington D.C. However, Fauquier County has been more successful at managing this growth than many of the adjacent counties. Nonetheless, there has been a dramatic increase in residential and commercial development over the last decade or two. The project area is situated within an area that was once a dairy farm (Figure 3, p. 7). As such, the general project setting is decidedly rural. Geology The project area is in the southwestern portion of the county and according to Commonwealth of Virginia geologic studies, it is within the Piedmont geologic region of Virginia. The Rappahannock River flows in a northwest/southeast direction to the south west of the project area. The general topography of the larger area ranges from gently rolling uplands to hilly and undulating along the streams. The area is underlain by bedrock of red shale and sandstone with inclusions of dibase sills and dikes (Fisher 1982). Soils Nine soil types are mapped within the project area: (in order of prominence) Arcola- Nestoria complex, Bowmansville silt loam, Colvard fine sandy loam, Montalto and Haymarket soils, Sowego loam, Oakhill-Rock outcrop complex, Ashburn silt loam, Ott- Catlett complex, and Panorama silt loam (Natural Resources Conservation Service [NRCS] 2008). Arcola-Nestoria complex located on 7 to 15 percent slopes, is found in 30 percent of the project area. It is a well drained soil located on the backslopes and side slopes of interfluves. Composed of residuum weathered from shale, sandstone, and siltstone, it is moderately shallow with an average depth of 26 inches to paralithic bedrock. Bowmansville silt loam and Colvard fine sandy loam each comprise approximately 20 percent of the project area. Bowmansville silt loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes is a shallow, poorly drained soil which is frequently flooded. Located on flood plains, the depth to the water table is 18 inches. Its parent material is alluvium derived from sandstone and shale. Colvard fine sandy loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes is a deep, well drained soil which is frequently flooded. While located on flood plains, the depth to the water table is 80 5
