IF2 – STP Q-9 and Q-10 located in the central portion of the project area produced one piece of stoneware and one window glass fragment. Subsequent radial STPs produced no additional artifacts. Due to a lack of additional cultural material it was determined to represent ephemeral cultural activity across the landscape and not a concentration of cultural activity. As such, this was not assigned a site number. IF3 – STP R-13 and R14 located in the south-central portion of the project area contained one wire nail and one quartz tertiary flake. No additional artifacts were recovered from radial STPs. Based on the lack of additional cultural material this location was determined to represent ephemeral cultural activity across the landscape and not a concentration of cultural activity. As such, this was not assigned a site number. IF4 – STP T-11 located in the eastern portion of the project area produced one tertiary quartz flake and one piece of quartz angular debris. No further cultural materials were recovered in the vicinity. Based on the lack of additional cultural material it was determined that this area was not a concentration of cultural activity. As such, this was not assigned a site number. IF5 – STP W-5 located in the northeastern portion of the project area produced one clear bottle glass fragment. Subsequent radial STPs produced no additional artifacts. Due to a lack of additional cultural material it was determined to represent ephemeral cultural activity across the landscape and not a concentration of cultural activity. As such, this was not assigned a site number. Site 44FQ0246 Site Description Site 44FQ0246 is a multi-component site dating to the mid-late nineteenth century with an indeterminate prehistoric affiliation. It is located in the northwestern portion of the project area within an open field and extends into a sparsely wooded tree line composed of cedars and pines (Figure 14 and Photo 5, p. 34). This site measures approximately 400 feet northeast/southwest x 100 feet northwest/southeast and comprises approximately 0.9 acres. The site is bound by negative shovel tests on the north, south, and east and by project limits and fence line on the west (Figure 15, p. 35). Site 44FQ0246 is situated on the eastern edge of a primary terrace of the Rappahannock River at the northwest corner of the project area. The survey revealed that the soils across the site are moderately deep. The average shovel test depth for this site was 10.4 inches with the deepest being 22 inches (Figure 16, p. 35). The average depth of Ahorizon soils at the site was 6.2 inches with the deepest being 18 inches. All cultural material was recovered from A-horizon soils. The stratigraphy of the site generally consists of a reddish brown silty clay Ap-horizon (plowzone) over a culturally sterile strong light olive brown clay B-horizon subsoil. Soils within the tree line, closer to Route 29, were extremely deflated with subsoil visible on the surface. This disturbance is 33
