Evaluation and

Evaluation and Significance The significance of site 44FQ0248 was evaluated in relation to the NRHP eligibility criteria. The site was evaluated in regards to Criterion A, for its association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history; Criterion B, for its association with people significant in our nation’s history; Criterion C, for its embodiment of the distinctive characteristics of a style; and Criterion D, for its potential to yield information important in history. Due to the identification of a concentration of Native American pottery and a biface this site has the potential to yield intact subsurface deposits and features. As such, the site has the potential to reveal significant information on settlement patterns or subsistence during the Woodland Periods (3200–1100 B.P.) in the Northern Virginia or Upper Coastal Plain (Criterion D). Based on the archaeological survey and limited historic research there is no association between these deposits and any significant historical events or pattern of events (Criterion A) or known significant persons (Criterion B), nor do the deposits illustrate the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction (Criterion C). As such, this site is recommended potentially eligible for listing on the NRHP under Criterion D as an individual resource. Dovetail recommends a Phase IIlevel evaluation if this site cannot be avoided. Further testing at this site should include deep testing to identify buried horizons. Site 44FQ0249 Site Description Site 44FQ0249 is a multi-component site dating to the mid-late nineteenth century through the early-twentieth century with an indeterminate prehistoric occupation. The site is situated in the yard immediately south and east of a standing house located in the project area (Figure 27; Photo 13 and Photo 14, p. 52). This site measures roughly 200 feet north-south x 350 feet east-west and comprises approximately 1.95 acres at 320 feet AMSL. The Rappahannock River lies approximately 375 feet to the southwest of the site. The site is primarily located in an open field with scattered trees and secondary growth. This site is bound by negative shovel tests on the north, east, and west, and by the project area boundary to the south (Figure 28, p. 52). A total of 41 STPs, including 16 radials, was excavated across this site. The survey revealed that the soils at the site are moderately shallow in depth, with the average shovel test depth being 8.2 inches and the deepest being 14 inches (Figure 29, p. 53). All cultural material was recovered from A-horizon soils. The average depth of A-horizon soils at the site was 5.1 inches with the deepest being 10 inches. The stratigraphy of the site generally consists of a brown, silty loam A-horizon over a culturally sterile strong brown to yellowish red, gravelly silty clay B-horizon subsoil. However, portions of the site, mainly closer to the house, contained disturbed soils due to the construction of the house and driveway. 50
