The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design became mandatory for new construction, alterations and barrier removal efforts on March 15, 2012 and they ultimately update accessibility requirements for a wide range of facilities in the both the public and private sectors covered by the ADA. Given this update to ADA standards that impact the built environment, we are offering a training seminar that will help clarify what the major changes are between the 1991 ADA Accessibility Guidelines and the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. This 5 hour seminar, presented by Jennifer Perry of United Spinal Association, will review “highlights” of the accessibility requirements found in the VA Construction Code/ICC ANSI A117.1 as well as the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. A review of major changes to accessibility requirements that impact features common to both commercial and residential facilities will be discussed in the morning session and the latter part of the seminar will highlight the Principles of Universal Design and provide information on the latest research and trends in Universal Design. Topics that will be covered include: Effective dates for the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design Information on the development process associated with the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design - including the ADA (State and local govt. and private businesses) and ABA (Federal) requirements. Discuss when the ADA Barrier Removal and Program Access requirements apply to existing facilities Exterior & interior accessible routes (walking surfaces, doors, protruding objects, etc…including new requirements for accessible routes in specific occupancies i.e. employee work areas) Accessible parking Options for vertical access (elevators, ramps, lifts) Toilet and bathing facilities (comparison of 1991 ADAAG toilet room layouts vs. 2010 ADA Standards and ANSI A117.1 requirements) Special Occupancy requirements (employee work areas, customer service facilities, places of assembly) Review of new requirements for Recreation Facilities (swimming pools, play areas, etc…) Review of the Principles of Universal Design
