INTRODUCTION Dovetail

INTRODUCTION Dovetail Cultural Resource Group, LLC (Dovetail) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the 23 acre Rappahannock Landing project area (Tax Maps 8 and 12) located in Fauquier County, Virginia. The project was conducted at the request of the Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation (FCDPR) in advance of construction. The parcel is being sold to a private construction company for the development of a residential neighborhood. The FCDPR included the completion of a cultural resource survey as part of the real estate transaction between themselves and the purchaser. The goals of the current survey are based on this agreement—to complete archival research on the Battle of Rappahannock Station, to identify any archaeological remains associated with the battle, and to make recommendations on the need for any additional subsurface investigations. The archaeological survey was conducted from May 31 through June 6, 2006. The work was conducted by Kerry K. Schamel, Jackie Maisano, Kristen Bloss, and Andrew Deci with Kerri S. Barile serving as Principal Investigator. Both Dr. Barile and Ms. Schamel meet or exceed the standards established for archaeologist by the Secretary of the Interior (SOI). Dr. Barile also meets the SOI standards established for architectural historian and historian. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 9.31 hectares (23 acre) Rappahannock Landing project area is situated on the northern secondary terrace of the Rappahannock River, approximately 0.8 km (0.5 miles) southwest of downtown Remington, Virginia (Photo 1 and 2, p. 2). The property is bounded on the east by a tree line dotted with abandoned houses, on the north and west by a subdivision, and on the south by a fence line and open flood plain grass land. The area to the west, between the current project area and the Rappahannock River, is being preserved by the FCDPR as a park commemorating the Battle of Rappahannock Station. The project area is in an open field with an abandoned farm complex occupying approximately 0.4 hectares (1 acre) in the southeastern portion of the project area. A gentle rolling topography dominates this parcel, and it ranges in elevation from 85.34 meters (280 feet) above mean sea level (AMSL) to 91.44 meters (300 feet) (AMSL). The entire testable 6.07 hectares (15 acres) were inspected through surface reconnaissance and shovel test pits, augmented by a metal detector survey. Shovel test pits (STPs) were excavated in all areas of the parcel except for within the abandoned farm complex. 1
