Wasteline Newsletter A Publication by Fauquier County Dept of Environmental Services Landfill Cell Construction: Construction of an Additional Disposal Cell Fauquier County Corral Farm Landfill was permitted in 1994 containing five disposal cells, of which only one remains to be constructed. The landfill is surveyed annually showing that the available landfill capacity requires the cell to be constructed during 2012. To receive the best pricing, contractor selection will be bid in the next few months with construction scheduled to occur throughout the summer and into the fall. The 7-acre cell requires the excavation of about 180,000 cubic yards of soil before placement of a 24-inch bentonite-clay liner and overlying plastic liner. The clay and plastic liners are tested extensively to confirm required construction quality standards have been achieved. Just above the liner system, a series of perforated collection pipes will be installed in a thick gravel layer to collect liquids (leachate). The engineer’s estimate for the construction of this cell is $4.5 million. Please consider re-energizing your recycling efforts so that this expensive landfill asset will last as long as Cell 2 construction in 2006 possible.
