Wasteline Newsletter A Publication by Fauquier County Dept of Environmental Services Fauquier County Wins Excellence Award: Presented by Virginia Recycling Association On May 21, 2008, the Virginia Recycling Association presented Fauquier County its highest award for county government solid waste management and recycling efforts at its annual conference in VA Beach, VA. From 2006 to 2007, Fauquier County Environmental Services doubled not only the tonnage of recyclables diverted from the landfill but also the revenue from the sale of materials to be reused and made into something new. Success is from identifying new marketable materials, increased public awareness and expanded collection services. Fauquier County Recycling Rate is 28.9%: Commonwealth of VA Mandates 15% In a report to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) submitted April 30, Fauquier County reported a recycling rate of 28.9% for the calendar year of 2007. This rate is up from 25.3% in 2006. The State mandate is 15%. A total of 35,927 tons of recyclables were diverted from the landfill, adding another 3-4 months of landfill life for future use. Collectively the largest item collected was paper which includes cardboard, newspaper, mixed paper, white office paper, and paperback books at 11,057 tons. Renovated Recycling Center: Prepared for Increased Processing Needs As more waste is being diverted from the landfill through resident participation and the recovery of reusable construction waste, the greater the need for automation and new recycling sorting efficiencies. During the late winter of 2008, the current sorting/processing facility began a major overhaul in the equipment and design needed to ease the ever growing flow of material coming through the doors of the facility. Many truck loads of processed material leave the facility each week in form of 600-1,200 pound bales, each piece sorted, cleaned and then baled for shipping. Close to one million dollars of recyclable materials were processed and sold during the fiscal year 2008. Construction Waste Recycled: Fauquier County Makes it Work For the past year, Fauquier County has been sorting through construction waste and debris from around the region. The county charges a per ton fee for construction waste and is currently recycling about half it. The items sorted out for recycling include cardboard, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastic buckets, landscaping pots, vinyl siding, PVC pipes, rock of various content, carpet and padding, plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
