y 2008 FAWU BULLETIN Cnr. NY1 & NY 110, Gugulethu, 7750 Newsletter For Members and Staff 7 November 2008 Cnr. NY1 & NY 110, Gugulethu, 7750 Tel: 021 637 9040 Fax: 021 637 9190. E-mail: dominique-fawu@telkomsa.net Police Shoots At Women Workers Police in Athlone shot at a crow d of female w orkers on October 7,2008 w hen they reported for duty to AliBaba in Athlone Industria, Cape Tow n. The company had embarked on a lockout after our members embarked on a temporary work stoppage the prev ious day in an attempt to solv e an organizational rights issue. They were refused entry to the premises and had to sign an agreement in which they admit to so-called “ unprotected industrial action”. After unsuccessful attempts to meet management, the latter called in the police, w ho, without try ing to v erify facts, sided w ith the company and interv ened with force w ithout any prov ocation. Tw o female workers were shot in their legs w ith rubber bullets during the confrontation. FAWU feels the police should not forget that they are there to protect and serv e and not to act as security guards for private companies. We w ere shocked at the police brutality , especially since our members complied w hen the company and police insisted that w e should not block the company ’s entrance and should not gather in the road. Members w anted to resolv e the matter peacefully by having a mass meeting in w hich to prov e to management that the majority of the w orkforce (ninety percent) are members of FAWU and therefore is entitled to negotiate on w age issues. Workers returned on October 15, 2008 with final w ritten w arnings. Tw o were suspended for tw o w eeks. Zane Marthinus, regional organizer at the time, felt that the union compromised a lot but the company continued w ith bad faith negotiations, w hich is against the spirit of the agreement betw een the tw o parties.
