Chapter 3 Materials and Methods 3.1 The laser 3.1.1 Laser design The PFS project aims at developing a light source delivering petawatt scale carrier envelope phase (CEP) controlled pulses with pulse energies ≥ 3J in the few-cycle regime ( ≈ 5 fs, 700-1400 nm) at a repetition rate of 10 Hz.[19] The design of this system is based on a modified OPCPA[66] chain. In this approach the large bandwidth is achieved by using intensely pumped thin DKDP 1 crystals for amplification of a broadband seed created by self-phase-modulation in a hollow-core fiber.[12] Figure 3.1: Schematic layout of the relevant parts of the PFS front end.
