(FROG)[68] method. The retrieval of the pulse duration from the FROG-trace was done with the commercial software supplied with the device itself. Figure 3.3 shows the FROG-trace which was taken at the position where the beam enters the damage threshold setup, corresponding to a pulse duration of 59 fs. This pulse duration can only be taken as rough indicator for the pulse duration in the damage threshold setup as the beam propagates through several millimeters of optical materials after this point. The pulses rate coming from the system is 1000 Hz, but most of the time this beam is shared between two different setups via a Pockels cell separating every second pulse and leaving an effective 500 Hz for our setup. A BME Delay Generator automatically delivers a correct trigger, matching 500 Hz or 1000 Hz. We decided to use for most of the measurements a pulse rate of 500 Hz in order to keep the measurements comparable. Every pulse has a pulse energy of 1.6 mJ at the exit of the laser. The diameter of the collimated beam coming from the system is about 1 inch (2,54 cm). 21
