4.2 Measured damage threshold of fused silica substrate and a gold mirror vs. literature Figure 4.2 shows the results of five damage threshold measurements on the same fused silica substrate, the damage sites have a distance of 1 mm. By now we are not shure how to derive a characteristic number from these curves but qualitatively it can be seen that the damage threshold for our laser parameters is around 1.5 J cm 2 . The damage sites have a distance towards each other of 1mm. Previous damage threshold studies on fused silica substrate showed for 100 fs a damage threshold between 1.5 J cm 2 and 3 J cm 2 .[11, 2, 47] For the reasons stated before about the reliability of literature values, we don’t know if this is a confirmation of our measurement or only coincidence. Figure 4.3 shows the results of five damage threshold measurements on the same gold coated fused silica substrate, the gold layer has a thickness of 100nm. Similar to the previously presented measurement, the damage sites have a distance of 1mm from each other. Qualitatively it can be said that the damage threshold of this mirror type lies under our measurement conditions in the order of 0.32 J cm 2 . For a film thickness of 100nm 0.2 J cm 2 has been reported as damage threshold,[38] the pulse duration in this measurement was with 30fs about a factor of 2 smaller than in our case. Contrary to dielectrics no decrease of the damage threshold within this decrease of 33
