Dear Friends, 

On behalf of more than 523,000 members of FFA, it is a pleasure to share with you our 2010 annual report on the 

activities of the National FFA Foundation. 

In looking back at all we accomplished, 2010 will certainly stand out as a year of positive change for FFA. From the 

first-ever opportunity to be a part of the 2010 Rose Parade to the retirement of Dr. Larry D. Case as the national 

FFA advisor, FFA certainly continued to grow and change. Through these milestones, we have remained committed 

to the ideas of premier leadership, personal growth and career success for middle school, high school, and collegiate 

students in communities large and small. The National FFA Foundation is proud of its positive impact on the lives 

of its members. 

The foundation's revenue totaled $15.5 million this year. Despite a weak economy, the 2010 National FFA Foundation 

Sponsors’ Board executed a strategy to strengthen the overall financial health of the foundation and ensure that the 

blue and gold legacy continues for future generations. 

Charged with increasing support from individuals, the foundation’s Individual Giving Council celebrated a 14 percent 

increase in individual giving. We also celebrated the career of Dr. Case by establishing the Larry D. and Joy L. Case 

Endowment that is dedicated to providing world-class leadership experiences for future FFA members. 

The foundation’s Board of Trustees adopted a new governance model that will transform the board’s ability to govern 

and provide future direction for the foundation. The foundation also welcomed Rob Cooper as executive director. 

Most of all, we are grateful for our individual and corporate sponsors who have given their time and resources 

to ensure that FFA grows and thrives. The stories you’ll read in this report are proof that FFA and its extraordinary 

members are successful because of your impact on and your contributions to our great organization.

STORIES OF THE YEAR 



FFA GOES GLOBAL 

Five countries, 77 students. More than 700,000 miles 

of travel. The year 2010 was a busy year for FFA 

members involved in the organization’s numerous 

international opportunities. 

New to the organization this year was the first-ever FFA 

Global Outreach: Africa trip. Caleb Dodd, a former state 

FFA officer from New Mexico, was one of six Collegiate 

FFA members who traveled to Zambia, Africa, last summer. 

The trip was sponsored by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. 

Dodd experienced a whole new agricultural world in Africa, 

one that differed greatly from what he’s used to in the 

southwestern part of the United States. 

“They don’t farm to make a profit (in Zambia). They don’t 

farm to get higher up on the chain. They’re farming for one 

reason and that’s sustainability,” Dodd said. 

Jonathon Brewer, a 2009-2010 Michigan state FFA officer, 

had a similar eye-opening experience. Brewer participated 

in the 2010 International Leadership Seminar for State 

Officers to China. Prior to that, Brewer’s international 

experience was limited to Canada. 

“In my lifetime, the opportunity to go to China with a group 

would be very limited or nonexistent so I took the opportunity 

when I could,” he said. 

Brewer said the support of GEA WestfaliaSurge and the 

Jerome Foundation was “huge” and kick-started his own 

fundraising efforts. Brewer’s former FFA chapter, Sanilac 

FFA Chapter in Michigan, did not have an alumni affiliate 

or foundation to lend financial support. The trip made him 

realize how important these groups are on the local and 

national level. 

“When I came back and retired from state office, I helped 

start my alumni affiliate to give that experience to other 

kids,” he said. 

Like Brewer, Emily Magnus never stepped foot outside 

the continent before pursuing international opportunities 

through FFA. Magnus, a former member of the Arkansas 

FFA Chapter in Kansas, participated in both the 2008 

proficiency trip to Costa Rica and the 2009 International 

Collegiate Agricultural Leadership (I-CAL) Program 

to China and Taiwan. 


“After I went to Costa Rica, any other international trip 

I could get my hands on I was definitely willing to apply 

for,” she said. 

As a full-time college student, Brewer said the role 

of sponsors was integral to both of her trips. 

“To be honest, I probably would’ve never been able 

to afford it without sponsors,” he said. 

Marty Tatman, education specialist at the National FFA 

Organization, said that’s the case for a lot of students. 

“Sponsors are vital to the success of the program,” 

Tatman said. “We wouldn’t be able to have these programs, 

and they wouldn’t be as educationally successful for 

our students, if not for sponsors.” 

Tatman has accompanied three I-CAL trips and said 

the U.S. Grains Foundation sponsorship goes beyond 

financial support. U.S. Grains Council representatives 

who live and work abroad help with the logistics of the 

trip—tours of operations, visits to processing plants and 

more—so students are able to interact one-on-one with 

people invested in agriculture. 






A CUT ABOVE THE REST 

The morning of Jan. 1 was a landmark in time for the 

National FFA Organization. In a tribute to rural youth and 

the many facets of the organization, RFD-TV dedicated its 

2010 Rose Parade float to FFA. The perfect match to the 

parade theme, “A Cut Above The Rest,” RFD-TV named 

the float, “FFA Today.” 

As the six national FFA officers, four Star Farmers and 

52 state representatives awoke at 4 a.m. in the darkness 

of a Los Angeles New Year’s morning, they put on their 

Official Dress and prepared to make history. 

“The enthusiasm everyone showed gave me a deeper 

appreciation of what I was a part of,” said Tucker Cool 

of Chelan, Wash. 

In the days leading up to the parade, FFA chapters from 

across the country made the journey to Pasadena, Calif., 

to be part of the first-ever National FFA Float. Rose by rose, 

piece by piece, FFA members made this float their own. 

“As each flower was placed, the float slowly came together, 

showing what FFA had to offer and all the hard work that 

was behind the making of the float. When it was finished, 

I had not only gained knowledge but respect for all of those 

who had played a part in making this float a reality,” Cool said. 

That morning, millions of viewers saw FFA in a new light 

as it rolled down Colorado Avenue surrounded by energetic 

FFA members. Without words, the float captured many details 

significant to FFA – the cross section of the ear of corn, 

the plow, the eagle, the rising sun and the American flag. 

But it also displayed the breadth of the organization — 

diversity, technology and the future. 

Every day, we use simple words to explain the organization 

to those who aren’t familiar with its reach. Premier leadership. 

Personal growth. Career success. Learning To Do, Doing 

To Learn, Earning To Live, Living To Serve. But if you ask 

FFA members what makes the organization so unique and 

inspired, they will tell you in just one word: Opportunity. 

Opportunity provided by sponsors such as RFD-TV. 

The opportunity to make lifelong memories. 

“Throughout my FFA career, I was blessed to be involved 

with some very special people and to take part in many 


memorable activities. I can honestly say that the opportunity 

to be in the Rose Parade and to visit the city of Pasadena 

was one of the most memorable events of my lifetime. 

The wonderful people I was able to interact with during 

the trip are some that I will never forget,” said Andrew 

Baird of Louisville, Ky. 

“Attending the Rose Parade made me realize just how 

lucky FFA members are to have amazing partners like 

RFD-TV that are willing to have members like me as 

a spokesman,” said Josh Sonnenberg of Sterling, Colo. 

“It truly was an honor.” 

Celebrating FFA on a Rose Parade float happens once 

in a lifetime, but RFD-TV recognizes the need to contribute 

every day. 






EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS 

FFA members are able to grow through skills and leadership 

activities regionally and nationally – in large part because 

of the help of sponsors. Even with sponsor support, however, 

many students have no funding to help them participate. 

Individual donors help fill that gap. 

“Not every career development event (CDE) or supervised 

agricultural experience (SAE) project or event gets a sponsorship, 

yet those students in areas without sponsors put in 

the same amount of work as any FFA member,” said Ryan 

Gallagher, director of individual and major gifts. “We need 

individuals to donate so all students can get the recognition 

they so richly deserve and have worked so hard 

to achieve.” 

Every year, individuals help fund SAEs, CDEs, scholarships, 

Stars of America and more. “Donors can make a 

difference in so many ways,” Gallagher said. “By pooling 

those individual donations, we fill in the gaps that corporate 

America can’t fill.” In 2010, for example, individual 

donors helped fund eight CDEs, 12 proficiencies and 38 

scholarships. 

Donors can give in many different ways. Unrestricted donations 

allow FFA to put pooled dollars where they’re most 

needed. Other donations are directed to particular programs. 

“We give individuals an opportunity to make gifts in honor 

or memory of family members or advisors, or to support 

programs they are particularly interested in, such as 

scholarships. Having donors who believe in what we do is 

absolutely critical,” Gallagher said. 

One donation option is the Blue Jacket program. With a gift 

of $2,500, donors can give a blue jacket to the FFA chapter 

of their choice, which receives the jacket and a gift of $500. 

“This connects people back to their home chapter,” Gallagher 

said. Chapters often use the jacket for a member who needs 

it, for recognition, or as a chapter jacket available to any 

student going to a competition. 

Jack Pitzer is a retired FFA staff member who worked on 

the FFA magazine from 1965 to 1998. Today, he is a donor 

and a member of the individual giving council – and he came 

to be a donor in a unique way. 

“In Virginia, I was the keeper of the archives,” Pitzer said. 

“I learned that the current archives keepers had a dream 

or wish that they could scan all the magazines–every page– 

from the first National Future Farmer magazine to today.” 


Pitzer had been holding on to a collection of every FFA 

magazine, wondering who could eventually use them. 

When he learned of the archivists’ dream, he shipped 

them his magazines so they could cut them apart and 

scan each page. “My wife and I decided to help fund the 

scanning so it could happen,” he said. “Now you can go 

in there and type a search word and search through all 

the magazines.” 

Pitzer’s efforts are one example of how a donor can 

direct giving in unique and meaningful ways. 

“Most of what donors dream about is helping students, 

and we can help them make that connection,” Gallagher 

said. “Individuals make a lot of things happen that just 

wouldn’t happen otherwise.” 






LEADERSHIP EVENT SPONSORS 

HELP BUILD LEADERS 

Nick West grew up in rural northeast Oregon, graduating from 

high school in 2009 with a class of only 16. Yet through 

his involvement in FFA and by taking advantage of several 

sponsored FFA leadership opportunities, he has traveled 

the country, journeyed to China, held state office and 

worked on national projects. 

Today, West is a student at Oregon State University 

and recently completed a year as an Oregon state FFA officer. 

He has been to leadership programs at state convention; 

the State Presidents’ Conference; national convention; 

an international leadership seminar in China; the National 

Leadership Conference for State Officers; BLAST Off 

(Building Leaders and Strong Teams of Officers); and more. 

“I’ve grown in my ability to communicate and relate to others 

and serve,” he said of the FFA leadership experiences 

he’s had. “I was probably conceited and selfish before I really 

dived deep into FFA. Once I woke up from my selfishness, 

I realized that titles weren’t important and through just 

being myself I can influence the process. That took going 

to BLAST Off, the State President’s Conference and national 

FFA convention. I’m so grateful for those experiences. 

Otherwise, life would have hit me really hard.” 

The events that played such a key role in West’s personal 

and professional growth would not have been possible without 

the sponsors who helped fund those events. Through their 

commitment to FFA, sponsors enable us to provide essential 

tools for our students that guide them in their own leadership 

development. Without sponsor commitment to FFA, 

a student may never realize his or her full potential. 

Since serving as president of his high school FFA chapter, 

West has come a long way. Through sponsored leadership 

activities, he has spoken in front of hundreds of people, 

traveled Oregon providing leadership seminars for local 

students, learned about his own strengths and how to 

maximize the strengths of others and worked on enhancing 

diversity and inclusion in FFA chapters. Perhaps most 

importantly, he says, he learned the value of servant leadership. 

“Whether it was the Day of Service, when I picked cucumbers 

for people who are homeless, or at national convention 

when we cleaned up and played basketball with students 


with disabilities, those experiences have stayed with me. 

It’s what sets FFA apart from other organizations,” 

he said. “It’s transformed my life and now I’m volunteering 

and getting my fraternity involved in community service. 

It’s all been because of those conferences that taught 

me so much about selfless leadership.” 

Today, West is working toward an environmental 

economics policy degree with an eye on law school. 

“I want to defend agricultural entities and protect their 

rights. I’d like to work on behalf of that farmer, rancher and 

agriculture company,” he said. He has interned with 

Oregon Rep. Greg Walden and this summer will intern 

with the American Farm Bureau. Eventually, he hopes 

to serve as a national FFA officer. 

West is just one example of the many FFA members 

who grow into effective leaders through sponsored FFA 

leadership opportunities. 

FFA creates leaders through helping students discover 

and develop their unique talents to meet the needs of 

their communities and of agriculture as a whole. The development 

of these young leaders is important, as it will 

be their responsibility to meet the challenges of feeding 

the world’s growing population. Our sponsors make all 

the difference in helping us develop and prepare leaders 

like West. 






THE OWL’S SWAN SONG 

The favorite owl of the National FFA Organization has 

ridden off into the rising sun. 

Dr. Larry Case, national FFA advisor since 1984, 

retired in January 2011. 

Case began his FFA career as a member of the Stet, Mo., 

chapter, where he served as both reporter and president. 

He credits his advisor as pushing him to pursue service 

in his adult life. 

“My advisor saw something in me,” he said. “He saw that 

I had potential, unlimited potential. I didn’t know any better 

so I took him seriously.” 

During his tenure, FFA membership has grown significantly 

and agricultural education has changed dramatically. 

He has shaken hands with hundreds of thousands of members 

as they received awards and raised the roof at 26 national 

FFA conventions. 

During the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, 

Ind., Case was honored for his long-term commitment 

to FFA and its members. His annual welcome during the 

opening sessions gave him the opportunity to take pause 

and offer thanks and reflection. 

“FFA members, you are the future and you make this Missouri 

farm boy proud,” he said. “I’m a thankful man. More than 

anything I’m thankful for the love of my family. Thank you 

from the bottom of my heart for making it possible for 

me to be of service to others.” 

While addressing the National FFA Alumni Convention 

delegates during convention, he indicated his wife, Joy, had 

plans for his retirement. 

“There’s a honey-do list with a few important tasks,” 

he said. “There are some gutters that need attending to.” 

But don’t expect Case to stop giving back to FFA. 

After his retirement was announced, FFA and the 

National FFA Foundation came together to decide something 

appropriate to honor Case. 

The result was the Larry D. and Joy L. Case Endowment. 

An endowment is a fund with a principal that can be added 

to at any time, earning annual interest. A percentage of that 

interest (in this case, 5 percent) is used for predetermined 


reasons. Case chose three areas that have been important 

to him to benefit from the endowment: agricultural 

instructor training, student leader development and 

global agriculture career opportunities. 

And with nearly three decades of giving back, FFA members 

and supporters alike can take a turn establishing 

Case’s legacy. 







CDE PARTICIPANTS ACHIEVE STUDENT SUCCESS

One way for FFA members to meet these goals while 

achieving student success is through career development 

events (CDEs). In 2010, there were 24 CDEs, ranging 

from livestock evaluation and floriculture to parliamentary 

procedure and environmental and natural resources. 

CDEs require members to think critically, communicate 

clearly and perform effectively—a challenge, for sure, 

but one made easier with the support of parents, teachers 

and the financial support of friends and sponsors. 

Each year, the National FFA Foundation designates more 

than $1 million of sponsor donations to CDEs. In 2010, 

$174,550 of that went toward scholarships for nationalwinning 

teams and individuals. Other funds are used for 

materials, travel, judges and CDE committees that operate 

the contests, which lead to stronger FFA members and 

leaders of tomorrow. 

One such leader is Ross Droppert, a member of the 2010 

national Agricultural Communications CDE winning team. 

Droppert is an FFA member from the Hudson FFA Chapter 

in Iowa. He received much more than praise and accolades 

for his success. 

“When we won, it was surreal to realize we were the best 

that year,” he said. “But the long-term results were amazing. 

I have learned a lot about the professional world and how 

to do presentations, which have strengthened my public 

speaking skills. 

“I can see that because of the support of FFA sponsors, 

I’ve come a long way from the shy freshman I once was.” 

Like all CDE winners at the national level, Droppert received 

a $1,000 scholarship that he’ll use to study aerospace 

engineering at Iowa State University. 

But not only national winners are thankful for CDE sponsors. 

“My contest taught me how to set goals and make a plan 

to get there,” he said. “Even if you don’t win, you learn 

to make yourself better and then transfer these skills 

to other parts of your life.” 

Just as he was supported by sponsors and friends 

of FFA, Holdwick wants to do the same for his fellow 

FFA members. 

“I see the way I participate changing,” he said. “I’ll settle 

into a new role as a coach, judge and, ideally, a financial 

sponsor. It’s all about service, and our sponsors don’t 

really get anything back except for the satisfaction 

of knowing they’re helping others.” 






DAYS OF SERVICE KEEPS FFA 

IN THE LIVING-TO-SERVE SPOTLIGHT 

There were cups of chocolate pudding and mandarin oranges, 

single-sandwich packs of squeezable peanut butter and 

jelly and a bowl of cereal. Two canned goods accompanied 

two cartons of white and chocolate milk. 

These products were gathered into paper lunch sacks 

by FFA members inside Gleaners Food Bank on the west 

side of Indianapolis, Ind., during the 2010 National Days 

of Service at the 83rd National FFA Convention. It was 

an assembly line with an end goal of providing the goods 

that make up a basic diet for a disadvantaged school-age 

child who otherwise would go. 

Ben Pope, an FFA member from the Irwin FFA Chapter in 

Georgia, had never been to Washington, D.C., or a large-scale 

FFA conference. Admittedly, he was nervous. 

It was the same feeling for Rae Evans, another Georgia FFA 

member from the Perry FFA Chapter, when she made her 

way to one of the seven sessions of the five-day Washington 

Leadership Conference last summer. 

“At first, I was dreading going. I’d never done anything like 

it and I was the only girl from my chapter making the trip,” 

Evans said. 

Soon enough, both Evans and Pope were more than enjoying 

themselves—and enriching their lives in the process. 

Each of them joined FFA members from across the country 

in a program that leaves attendees with the knowledge and 

confidence to act in ways that help their schools, 

community and their country. 

Both programs – the service-oriented National Days of Service 

during the national FFA convention and the memberinspiring 

Day of Service during the Washington Leadership 

Conference – allow FFA members to act out the final 

portion of the FFA motto, which is “Living to Serve.” 

Neither, however, would be possible without the support 

of the respective programs’ sponsors. Cargill helps to make 

the National Days of Service during convention possible 

while Monsanto and Timberland provide support for 

Days of Service. 


Monsanto’s support helps to lower the student cost 

of attending WLC, making the experience available 

to members from all 50 states. 

Timberland’s support provided materials and other 

assistance that allowed 2,233 total WLC participants 

to help out at 10 different sites around the Washington, 

D.C., area during the course of the summer conference. 

“I'm really grateful for everything the WLC staff taught 

us because they made me appreciate my life and everything 

I have,” Pope said. “They helped me realize that 

I have a purpose in life and they showed me how to live 

out that purpose by being an ‘authentic leader.’” 

Similarly, the key driver behind the 13 sites that make 

up the National Days of Service at the national FFA 

convention was sponsorship from Cargill. 

Thanks to Cargill’s support, FFA members from 

17 states participated in donating 4,000 total hours 

of service spanning two days during the 2010 national 

convention – worth an estimated $81,000 to the 

benefiting organizations.
