FIBA - Federation International de
Basketball
FIBA’s new GAME
Introducing 3x3 to National Basketball Federations
3x3 basketball
Both simple and fun to play,
3x3 is the most preferred
format of recreational basketball
played on playgrounds around the
world. It is a valuable promotional
activity for basketball and also
increasingly played at competitive
off-season tournaments.
FIBA is looking to strengthen its
growth and increase the number
of basketball players and fans by
structuring and developing 3x3
basketball worldwide. Following
the successful introduction in the
2010 Youth Olympic Games in
Singapore, the ultimate goal is
that 3x3 becomes a self-sustained
new FIBA discipline and enters the
Olympic Games by latest 2020.
FIBA will regulate the rules of the
game, facilitate the promotion of
the discipline and sanction the
organisation of 3x3 tournaments
with the support of Zones and
National Federations.
FIBA President
FIBA Secretary General
With a new game, come new opportunities
3x3 provides some exciting growth opportunities for all National Federations:
1) Expand membership and fan base
In addition to existing licensed
players, 3x3 reaches out to a
community of players and fans that
may not be currently connected to
organised basketball. These can
be registered or licensed by the
National Federations.
2) Leverage grassroots and
promote the game
It offers an ideal format in order
to work with schools and other
grassroots partners to further
promote basketball at a low cost.
National Federations can attract
the youth and new players to the
game by developing grassroots
programmes leveraging
3x3 basketball.
FIBA HAS A NEW GAME - 3x3 BASKETBALL An INNOVATIVE approach
3x3 is already played around the
world. It is now time to leverage
all these activities in order to
grow the game of basketball.
In line with modern trends that
promote freedom, individuality and
technology, FIBA is developing an
online digital platform to create
a worldwide 3x3 community
where players can register and
tournament organisers can manage
their competitions. The digital
platform will be rolled out in
steps, tested during 2011 and fully
operational in 2012.
3) Accelerate development
3x3 provides an alternative route
for emerging basketball countries
and more opportunities for all
countries to have their players
compete at a high level and to
have their teams ranked for
international competitions.
FIBA and National Federations
will see new stars emerging
from 3x3 basketball.
4) Build new assets
More events and competitions
will create new promotional
opportunities. The simplicity of 3x3
tournaments allows for games to
be played outside the traditional
venues: city centres, squares,
shopping malls and
other creative new locations.
The digital platform will consist
of a specifi c 3x3 website with:
• 3x3 Rules of the Game
• Information about upcoming
sanctioned events
• News on the sport
• Handbooks for National
Federations
• Freeware for the organisation
of tournaments
• Guides for other stakeholders
• Features for players
• FIBA Global Ranking
• Features for players
• Etc...
Players registered on the FIBA 3x3
digital platform will be entered
into an individual FIBA Global
Ranking system that will be
updated and monitored online.
The ranking system will allow
for comparison between players,
incentivise participation and glue
the worldwide 3x3 community
together. It will also allow for
National Federation rankings and
rankings by gender and categories.
The urban nature makes it easy
to have solid public sector
partnerships, while the fun &
feel-good factors will attract new
sponsors and partners.
FIBA, Zones and National
Federations: it’s time to play 3x3!
FIBA’s digital platform will
offer a freeware to facilitate the
organisation as well as to set
standards for the organisation
of tournaments.
FIBA’s vision is to organise 3x3
basketball around tournaments
of different categories and national
tours. Once the digital platform is
fully implemented, FIBA, National
Federations and Zones will work
closely with promoters and cities
to develop numerous tournamentcentric
tours and competitions.
Whether you are an established
or emerging federation, your 3x3
basketball players may make it to
the 3x3 World Championship or
even to the Olympic Games.
