CHICAGO CHAPTER NEWSLETTER MARCH 2004

Michael P. Krasny

Chairman Emeritus - CDW Computer Centers, Inc.

To Speak at Joint Dinner Meeting with the Chicago Finance Exchange

“I didn’t have a master plan or a MBA

and I wasn’t out looking to start a

business , but what I did have and do

have is a passion for technology. This

passion and knowledge allowed

CDW to grow into what is today the

worlds largest multi-brand computer

reseller.”

Michael P. Krasny is founder and

Chairman Emeritus of the Board of

Directors for CDW, a FORTUNE 500 company and

the nation’s largest direct marketer of multi-brand

computer solutions for business. From a homebased

business incorporated in 1984, CDW today

boasts more than 3,500 coworkers and nearly $5

billion in sales in 2003.

Michael started custom configuring computers in

1983 after placing a classified advertisement in the

Chicago Tribune to sell his own PC. What began at

his kitchen table in Glenview, Illinois laid the

foundation for CDW’s unique, successful business

model.

Michael started the company on the foundation of

two essential premises—a commitment and

dedication to customers and coworkers. The

development and implementation of one of

Michael’s signature philosophies, “Happy coworkers

make happy customers” led to CDW being named

to FORTUNE® magazine’s list of the “100 Best

Companies to Work for in America” for the last six

years in a row. Additionally, Michael’s integrity and

commitment to the customer led to CDW winning

the National Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award

for Marketplace Ethics in 2000.

Michael was named “CEO of the Year” by Financial

World in 1996 and was recognized by Inc.

magazineand Ernst and Young for his

pioneering leadership in 1993 as

“Entrepreneur of the Year.”

Michael retired as CEO and Chairman

of CDW in 2001 after a 20 year

marathon. Today Michael is President

of Sawdust Investment Management

Corp., a private investment company, as

well as the Circle of Service Foundation,

a family foundation primarily focused in serving the

Chicago land area. In addition, he is a board member

of the Kellogg School of Management at

Northwestern University, Winning Workplaces, The

Center for Enriched Living, The Anti-Defamation

League and B’nai Brith Beber Camp. Michael

graduated in 1975 from the University of Illinois

with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance.

From

The

President

Spring is right around the corner! We have an exciting

and full agenda through July for our members. There

will be an additional dinner meeting in July, with The

Honorable Susan Schmidt Bies, Member of the Board

of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. This will

be a “Member Bring a Guest” evening, an opportunity

for members to invite a qualified prospective member to

be our guest for dinner and a great program.

Dean Robert L. Parkinson, Jr., of Loyola University, was

our February dinner speaker. Bob shared his experiences

and discussed the comparisons between his former

position as President and COO of Abbott Laboratories

to his current position as Dean of Loyola University.

The Professional Development session “Best Practices

in Expense and Travel Management” was presented by

Senior Executives from American Express. Discussions

included the latest trends in ways to streamline the

purchasing function, and best practices for efficient

payment solutions. Both were well received.

Congratulations to the 2004 FEI Scholarship Recipients.

Special thanks to Dr. Ellen Landgraf, Chair of Academic

Relations, for an outstanding job once again, on

organizing the Scholarship Program. Thank you also to

the chapter members Jeff Hudson, Sharon Belz and Pat

Garvey, who assisted in interviewing our scholarship

candidates.

Congratulations also to Gidley Management Group, and

especially Susan Gidley, who was presented with an

outstanding service award at the dinner meeting. Gidley

Management Group has worked with FEI Chicago for

the past six years and has done an excellent job for our

Chapter!

We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Program

and Membership Committees. The commitment is 4-5

hours a month. If interested, please contact me via email:

mhollein@worldnet.att.net.

Our March dinner meeting is a joint event with the

Chicago Finance Exchange. Michael Krasny, Chairman

Emeritus & Founder CDW Corporation will be our guest

speaker. The Professional Development Program topic

will be “Cash Management” and will be presented by

representatives from Bank One.

We hope to see everyone on March 18th !

FEI AND THE JOHNSSON GROUP SPONSOR

ROUNDTABLE SERIES

The Johnsson Group and FEI have joined together to create the Roundtable

Series. With the goal of promoting the sharing of ideas and insights on topics of

mutual interest, we have launched three different roundtables to date. At this

point, the Roundtables have been focused on specific functional areas within

billion dollar plus corporations. The Corporate Controllers Roundtable was

highlighted in the last newsletter. There are currently, two additional roundtables,

one focused on Internal Auditors’ perspectives and the other on Treasurers’

concerns. The Roundtables meet quarterly and agenda items are driven by the

group’s input. Participants share concerns, create an informal network of colleagues,

and are able to bring an outside, multi-industry perspective back to their own

companies.

If you are interested in joining any of the current roundtables or have an idea

for a new roundtable, please contact Nancy Reiser at 312-612-6231 or
