This workshop is designed to bring about a closer connection
between consumers and their food by promoting the
understanding of how food choices affect many things such
as soil and water quality, rural economics, energy consumption,
biodiversity and American culture.The goals are to help
consumers think about the ramifications of their food selections
and to assist them in making more informed choices.
The keynote speaker, Kamyar Enshyan with the Center for
Energy and Environmental Education at the University of
Northern Iowa, will discuss the impact of 8 years of local
food work in one metro area (Waterloo/Cedar Falls, IA). His
presentation is entitled You Know Your Doctor and Your
Dentist. Do You Know Your Farmer?
Choose from a variety of Concurrent Sessions including the
popular food demonstration by Julie Jasonski from Michael
Fields Agricultural Institute. Also from Michael Fields will be
Margaret Krome to discuss Ag Policy & the Environment. The

10th Annual Food for Thought Workshop –
Making Food Choices for a Healthy Environment and Healthy Communities
afternoon session will feature a Producer Panel of local farmers
talking about their growing methods and inventory.

A children’s program with the theme of Animals and Plants
as Food will be run by Oakdale staff and will be available for
ages 4-10 at $2 per hour/child (not including the lunch hour).

Earth Day Celebration

Discover and experience nature with hands-on activities. Get
up close and personal with those living things around us we
often overlook. Find out how other organizations are connected
with natural resources – Conservation Activity booths
and hands-on activities for all ages. Come spend the day in the
woodlands of Oakdale. Watch for public service announcements
for specific times and activities. Admission is FREE.
6th Annual Astronomy Day Open House
JETS Observatory will be hosting its annual event at the observatory next to Park Hills Golf Course. This event includes: open
house of the observatory, telescope and astronomy-related displays, guest speakers, handouts, and weather permitting there
will be safe viewing of the Sun. All ages welcome and the event is FREE.

The Easter Bunny will be making a visit
to Freeport on Saturday, April 15, and is
willing to make a special visit to your
house to deliver a basket filled with
goodies. To sign up for this unique program,
call or stop by the Freeport Park
District Office and put your name on the
list. Registration is limited, so sign up
early. The Bunny will only make deliveries
between 2:00-5:00 PM, and residences
must be within Freeport Park District boundaries.
