This workshop is designed to bring about a closer connection<br />

between consumers and their food by promoting the<br />

understanding of how food choices affect many things such<br />

as soil and water quality, rural economics, energy consumption,<br />

biodiversity and American culture.The goals are to help<br />

consumers think about the ramifications of their food selections<br />

and to assist them in making more informed choices.<br />

The keynote speaker, Kamyar Enshyan with the Center for<br />

Energy and Environmental Education at the University of<br />

Northern Iowa, will discuss the impact of 8 years of local<br />

food work in one metro area (Waterloo/Cedar Falls, IA). His<br />

presentation is entitled You Know Your Doctor and Your<br />

Dentist. Do You Know Your Farmer?<br />

Choose from a variety of Concurrent Sessions including the<br />

popular food demonstration by Julie Jasonski from Michael<br />

Fields Agricultural Institute. Also from Michael Fields will be<br />

Margaret Krome to discuss Ag Policy & the Environment. The<br />

Earth Day Service Projects<br />

Projects may include cleanup,<br />

10th Annual Food for Thought Workshop –<br />

Making Food Choices for a Healthy Environment and Healthy Communities<br />

afternoon session will feature a Producer Panel of local farmers<br />

talking about their growing methods and inventory.<br />

The $15 fee includes continental breakfast and lunch.<br />

Audubon Society and Friends of Oakdale members $12 and<br />

A children’s program with the theme of Animals and Plants<br />

as Food will be run by Oakdale staff and will be available for<br />

ages 4-10 at $2 per hour/child (not including the lunch hour).<br />

Earth Day Celebration<br />

Saturday, April 22 • 12:00-3:00 PM<br />

Discover and experience nature with hands-on activities. Get<br />

up close and personal with those living things around us we<br />

often overlook. Find out how other organizations are connected<br />

with natural resources – Conservation Activity booths<br />

and hands-on activities for all ages. Come spend the day in the<br />

woodlands of Oakdale. Watch for public service announcements<br />

for specific times and activities. Admission is FREE.<br />

6th Annual Astronomy Day Open House<br />

JETS Observatory will be hosting its annual event at the observatory next to <strong>Park</strong> Hills Golf Course. This event includes: open<br />

house of the observatory, telescope and astronomy-related displays, guest speakers, handouts, and weather permitting there<br />

will be safe viewing of the Sun. All ages welcome and the event is FREE.<br />

is Free for children 3-9 years old. Bring your<br />

willing to make a special visit to your<br />

house to deliver a basket filled with<br />

goodies. To sign up for this unique program,<br />

call or stop by the <strong>Freeport</strong> <strong>Park</strong><br />

<strong>District</strong> Office and put your name on the<br />

list. Registration is limited, so sign up<br />

early. The Bunny will only make deliveries<br />

between 2:00-5:00 PM, and residences<br />

must be within <strong>Freeport</strong> <strong>Park</strong> <strong>District</strong> boundaries.<br />
