The reason of course is the Aristo-Craft 

Team and we want to introduce them to 

you. They work together in an efficient 

manner under the direction of Maryann 

Polk, General Manager and Lewis Polk, 

President. We like to say that Maryann 

(SEE SURVEY ON PAGE 8) 

takes care of today and Lewis takes 

care of tomorrow. 

This is the best of both worlds. This 

husband and wife team each has 

different responsibilities; yet need to 

coordinate the two aspects into one 

effort. This successful marriage has 

been going on for 37 years. So as a 

home and business team this cooperation 

works. 

It works because we select top-notch 

talented co-workers and treat them like 

family. Maryann acts as the personnel 

director and is the house psychologist 

and housemother for all. Someone has 

to be the boss and Maryann takes on 

that responsibility very well. Her three 

children are grown and out of the 

house, so she can concentrate her 

efforts on her team of workers and keep 

the business focused and moving 

smoothly.

Trade customer service is captained by 

Aixa Lebron. Everyone loves talking to 

Aixa as she knows the product line and 

can find anything buried in the depths 

of the computer. If dealers have an 

order question, Aixa is the one to talk 

to. She has a sunny personality 

combined with intelligence. Aixa is the 

kind of person you want to talk to when 

you need information. 

Priya Shievdayal is the guardian of the 

gate. Our receptionist and club member 

specialist has a work capacity that is 

legendary. We give her things to do and 

before we can blink they are done and 

done correctly. Priya answers the 

phones and will get you to the person 

that can give you an answer. 

Jackie Caceres is our Accounts 

Receivable and Credit Manager. If you 

are a trade customer and need to trace a 

payment or open a new account, Jackie 

is the one you want to talk to. Jackie is 

detailed to a fault and keeps superb 

records and notes on past activities and 

can help resolve nagging questions. 

Jackie is new with us and is a local 

resident of Irvington. This is our first 

after moving from Jersey City and she 

represents the town very well. 

ARISTO-CRAFT TRAINS 

Navin Shievdayal is our Parts Manager. 

Navin also does repairs and has a 

keen ability to spot service trends and 

brings them to the attention of our 

engineers. He is a jeweler and puts the 

attention to detail into the repairs. 

Navin is a big part of what makes this 

company great. By the way he is 

Priya’s brother. 

Gene Macenat is our electronic repair 

wizard. Gene memorizes virtually all of 

our electronic board layouts and also 

does the train repairs. His hands are 

magic and he can repair the toughest 

problems with grace. Gene is a 

specialist and we are special to have 

him with us. 

Sherry Shievdayal, the Aunt of Navin 

and Priya, is our shipping manager. 

She sees to it that your goods are 

shipped properly and accurately. 

Sherry personally re-counts the order 

picker’s work and signs off on each 

and every package. She enters the 

information into the computer and is 

the person you speak to when tracking 

a shipment of merchandise or repairs. 

Sherry has never missed a day of work 

in over 15 years and sets the pace for 

the work habits of Team Aristo.

John Shievdayal, her husband is our 

warehouse manager. John sees to the 

picking of the orders. He can unload a 

container the same day it arrives and 

turn products right around and out the 

shipping door. John keeps the warehouse 

in shape and makes sure we keep 

our goal of shipping the same day we 

receive your order. Impressive indeed. 

Gil Rose is our technical director and has 

the honor of being with the company 

from the day it started in 1935. Gil 

handles our OEM motor sales. But 

when it comes to our approach to 

product quality and parts sourcing he 

sets the tone of unqualified perfect 

design and production. Everyone 

gravitates to “Uncle” Gil when they are 

challenged and Gil always points them in 

the right direction. 

Byung Song is our Chief Engineer. Mr. 

Song has been a development engineer 

all his life. He started in the ham radio 

hobby as a teenager, which led him to 

engineering school for RF design. He 

also learned mechanical engineering and 

designs all of our trains and power 

systems. Mr. Song is responsible for our 

new patented drives and accepts any

OK! For those of you who were blown 

away by the SD45, you had better grab 

on tight, real tight. Not only does 

Aristo-Craft have their first present era 

Diesel in the works, they have the test 

shots and engineering samples of it 

from the factory. All that is left are 

some refinements and artwork. Then we 

set back and wait for the slow boat 

from China. 

Price and delivery date have yet to be 

announced. We will have to wait and 

see when and how much this is going 

to cost us. I am betting on a delivery 

date somewhere around Labor Day. I 

may be off on this but that is my best 

guesstimate. 

Right now Aristo-Craft’s staff engineers 

and maintenance technicians are 

going over the factory samples with a 

fine tooth comb. Here is the thing that 

impressed me and something that a lot 

of you may not know. The first things 

these guys do is put it together and 

take it apart again several times. This 

makes sure the locomotive is up to 

specifications and that within reason it 

is relatively easy to service. There are 

some things structurally that just have 

to be the way they are. Over the last 

couple of years this concept has 

proven to be a smart move. 

This one is going to be darn tough on 

the competition. All of the technology 

that makes this diesel move has been 

proven and refined on the SD45. The 

Dash-9 will use the same patented 3axel 

motor block as the SD45 with new 

side frames to accurately represent the 

large modern GE locomotive. It will 

also benefit from Aristo-Craft’s new 

patented super smoke unit.

I have seen the test shots and the 

engineering samples. The Dash-9 is 

remarkable for attention to detail. 

Where the real Dash-9’s have a pimple 

on the roof and walkways, this model 

has a pimple right down to the texture. 

The radio antenna has the 

manufacturer’s name on the side of it, 

if you want to get a magnifying glass 

out and take a look. I just don’t get 

any better than this.

This unit is going to make maximum of 

etched brass grates and grills, and there 

are a lot of them on a Dash-9. It will also 

have solid metal railings and handrails. 

Lighting is going to be something too, 

right down to the ditch lights, porch 

lights and step lights. Of course there 

will be the standard lighted front and rear 

headlights and number boards.

This unit is also going to come with the 

Aristo-Craft plug and play connections 

on the PC boards that are now standard 

on Aristo-Craft’s Locomotives. It is also 

going to come sound ready and 

equipped with a quality water resistant 

speaker. 

This is truly a class I railroad model and 

it is not going to be suited for anything 

less than 8 foot diameter track. So for 

those of you who want to start running 

the new diesels and still have those tight 

little diameter curves you might want to 

look at some larger diameter curves. This 

would also be a good time to start

This is kind of like one of those movies 

where miracle surgeries take place and 

someone gets all new organs and lives 

another 20 years. Only in this case it is a 

time tested 1/29 th scale locomotive and it 

is not science fiction, it is happening. 

By the time you read this, delivery of the 

new Aristo-Craft Pacific should be 

rapidly approaching. 

The Aristo-Craft 4-6-2 Pacific is an 

accurate representation of a President 

Class Locomotive built by Baldwin for 

the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1927. 

This was Aristo-Craft’s second venture 

into steam locomotives and except for 

the Lionel Atlantic it was the only mass 

produced North American big steamer 

on the market until this year. 

Most of us have in one way or another 

came to love or hate the Aristo-Craft 

Pacific. To some the early ones were 


sometimes a little problematic and 

required some TLC. But most of the 

later ones were very good runners and 

depending on owner and layout they 

were on average a good pulling locomotive. 

I have one, did have two and loved 

both of them. I only started getting rid 

of the old to make room for the new 

version. 

Over the years as new technology and 

manufacturing processes were developed 

Aristo-Craft made upgrades on the 

Pacific. Many upgrades did much to 

increase the durability and power of the 

drive system. However as more and 

more Heavyweight Passenger Cars 

became available it got to be harder and 

harder for the Pacific’s to pull them on 

any type of grade over 1%.

Drivers for the New 4-6-2 Pacific 

The face is the same, 

but boy oh boy 

are the insides different!

product line the Pacific is being gutted 

and all of its interior workings are being 

replaced. By now most of you have seen 

the new Aristo-Craft Mikado which was 

based on a Pacific tender, just as many 

1:1 railroads had Pacific’s and Mikado’s 

that shared the same boiler. The Aristo- 

Craft Pacific is benefiting from much that 

has gone on in development to bring the 

Mikado locomotives to market. By the 

way if you have not seen the new 

Mikado’s run yet you owe it to yourself 

to go check one out. It is everything 

they said it would be, and perhaps a 

little more. It features a lot of the things 

that are being incorporated into the New 

Pacific. 

The drive system has been entirely 

replaced with a drive based on the very 

successful patented modular gearbox 

introduced in the SD-45 and now being 

used in the Mikado. The new motor 

block utilizes new drive features and has 

one large can motor with a built in 

cooling fan. A new motor had to be 

developed to power the Mikado and 

Pacific with a fan incorporated into the 

design for optimal cooling of the motor 

when under load. Three modular 

gearboxes and two flywheels drive all six 

of the drive wheels. The plastic drive 

rods have been replaced with new die 

cast drive rods that look more like they

were machined and not die cast. 

Perhaps most importantly, the drive 

wheels are driven by the gearboxes not 

the rods. This ensures the maximum 

power available is going into the 

improved cast drive wheels, which 

feature a new blackened chrome finish 

that will eliminate problems with 

connectivity. This also should cut 

down on damage to side rods caused 

by stress of heavy loads or mishandling. 

The flywheels should add to the 

smoother operation and provide more 

power to the locomotive. Now when 

you take all of this and add in the new 

patented Super Smoke unit with built in 

burn out protection and the new 

Aristo-Craft plug and play boards for 

DCC and RC use, you have a winner. 

Aristo-Craft has also done away with 

the old bare brass rods that used to 

serve as handrails. Now all of the brass 

handrails are blackened to better match 

appearances on the prototype. The

upgrading your track to Aristo-Craft’s 

Stainless Steel. After all real trains 

don’t run on yellow rail and these are 

as close to real as it gets. 

With thousands of Dash-9’s working 

on the 1:1 railroads, and many hundreds 

more on order this locomotive is 

going to be around for some time to 

come. There is hardly a day that goes 

by that I don’t see one or more double, 

triple or quadruple lash ups of these 

hard working locomotives headed east 

with a load of coal or west with a load 

of empties. Or just moving in either 

direction with a mixed freight. I also 

see these doing some road switching at 

a couple of local industries. I am lucky 

enough to have to travel along beside 

the major East/West route of the CSX 

over the old B&O line from Brunswick 

to Cumberland, MD on my way to 

work. I also cross over the NS line 

from Hagerstown, MD to Front Royal,

tender has been improved to allow 

for easier and better connections. 

Aristo-Craft has also included a 

mounting bracket for a front coupler 

that can be swapped with the 

provided cowcatcher pilot. 

Depending on the road name and 

practices of that railroad the new 

Pacific will be equipped with either 

the traditional Pacific’s Long tender 

or a Vanderbilt tender. Both tenders 

will be equipped with a speaker and 

plug and play connections for 

aftermarket sound systems. They 

will also be equipped with wiring for 

battery operation and will have 

redundant power pick up in the rear 

wheels of the tender. 

Both the Mikado and the New 

Pacific would have been here sooner 

but Aristo-Craft decided to add a 

thermal protector to the PC board.

while to get to work. 

You just have to love these big guys 

as the pull a full load up a long grade 

in the last notch and black diesel 

smoke blowing back over the top of 

the locomotives.

Aristo-Craft’s initial offerings will 

include CSX, BNSF, Union Pacific 

(UP), Santa Fe, (ATSF), Norfolk 

Southern (NS), Chicago and 

Northwestern, (C&NW), Canadian 

National (CN), and Southern Pacific 

(SP), and of course undecorated. 

These will of course be in the 

Hallmark Aristo-Craft crystal clear 

prototypical graphics, lettering, road 

numbers and detailed paint jobs.

The thermal protector will shut down the 

locomotive in the event of overheating or 

electrical short. This will protect the 

electronics and motor from burning out. 

For most of us the Aristo-Craft Pacific was 

a very good model right out of the box, for 

many others it was a place to start kit 

bashing to make the locomotives no one 

else made. Mine were always just fine out 

of the box, and a Very Good model just 

went to Fantastic. 

The initial offerings of the new Pacific will 

include Pennsylvania (PRR), Baltimore and 

Ohio (B&O), New York Central (NYC), 

Southern Crescent Ltd. (SOU), Union 

Pacific (UP), Rio Grand (DRGW), Santa Fe 

(ATSF), Great Northern (GN), Canadian 

National (CN), Chicago & Northwestern 

(CNW), New Haven (NH), and undecorated 

Black. 

Check with your favorite dealer for pricing. 

Yes, just when I thought that my bank 

account was safe, the Dash-9 comes along, 

it looks like I am going to have to start out 

with a pair of these. 

Hey honey look what the Fed EX guy left 

here, can we keep em? Huh, huh, Huh? No 

dear, they don’t come in purple and silver . . 

. The Atlantic Coast Line never had these . 

. . No dear, you’ll just have to ask Lewis. 

Looks like I have to get the speech down 

pat, the first two are easy, it is going to be 

the 3 rd , 4 th , and 5 th that are hard to justify, 

unless one of them is Sue’s Purple and 

Silver ACL livery. 

So guys start saving now, these are going 

to be here quicker than we realize.

challenge we throw at him. Because 

Mr. Song is an electronic engineer he 

can design our trains to best utilize 

electronics even if he doesn’t have 

time to do the electronics himself. Mr. 

Song created our train line and 

continues to design and improve our 

trains. 

Jae Kae Kim is our electronic guru. 

He designs and programs all of our 

electronics along with Mr. Song. Jae 

Kae is the heart of our very successful 

Train Engineer system and our 

new R/C for model planes and boats. 

Jae Kae loves and understands 

hobbies and has made a career out of 

making exciting product for hobbyists. 

Jae Kae is our future as electronics 

are in most of our products with 

features like plug and play. It’s a 

digital world and we have a guru to 

lead us along the right path. 

David A. Newall is our product 

manager. He takes care of deciding 

which product to make, making it 

accurate, making the drawings 

accurate, writing the manual, coordinating 

production with the factory 

and all other things relating to the 

product and it’s fit into the scheme of 

other Aristo-Craft products. David 

has lead the charge from toy trains to 

scale model trains. We will continue 

to amaze the G Gauge world with 

spectacular new products that are 

beyond the pale in detail and running 

capabilities. This is what David does 

for us.

Michael Hauptmann is our Customer 

Service Manager and our digital presentation 

Ace. He helps customers with 

consumer issues and answers customer’s 

questions. He maintains the web site and 

keeps it up to date as well as doing our 

new digital newsletter. Michael also 

processes our promotional free goods 

orders and we are getting a lot of kudos 

for a fast delivery unlike many other nontrain 

free offers. 

John S. Gill is our Radio Control maven. 

We have entered the new century with a 

synthesized R/C system for boats and 

airplanes not unlike that of our Train 

Engineer. John is also involved in our 

OEM business, so if you’re a manufacturer 

looking for motors or other electronic 

devices call John. 

Alan Battle is responsible for pulling 

most orders. He is always found on our 

forklift whizzing around the warehouse 

finding your order. Frankly, this is where 

the rubber hits the road. Your order 

becomes a reality when Alan so carefully 

puts your order in his able hands. Alan 

was the stalwart who made our move 

from Jersey City a reality and thus 

became a major player on Team Aristo.

Asyut “Kenny” Kahn’s job is to pack 

your order. He is a master of packing. 

Every order that is less than a full 

carton passes through his able hands. 

He marks the contents of the goods 

contained in the package. We virtually 

have no missing items in our shipments. 

We need good soldiers in our team 

effort and Kenny is the best. 

We have several associated members 

who may not work at our offices but are 

in no way less than members Team 

Aristo. 

The first is Michael Vickey. He is the 

ultimate Corel Draw artist and a 

dedicated railroad historian. Michael 

and David collaborate to make Aristo- 

Craft graphics the most authentic in the 

marketplace. In addition to always 

working from confirmed sources 

Michael knows how to place artwork on 

our models and provides detailed 

instructions in color graphic representations 

to the factory. A picture is worth a 

thousand words and Michael’s artwork 

is worth that and more. 

Steve Gugel acts as a draftsman under 

the direction of Mr. Song. He designed 

the SD-45 and the Dash-9. Steve 

understands mold making, is a train 

hobbyist and a superb 3D Cad Cam 

artist. He sees that models are fitted 

together in the computer and makes 

stereo lithography samples in resin for 

sensitive parts that need testing before 

we commit to the steel molds. Steve 

also does our exploded view drawings. 

So you have seen his handiwork on our 

web site or in the box with the product. 

Hal Arnold is someone you will never 

meet. He’s our Accountant. Frankly, 

you can’t tell if you’re winning or 

losing if you don’t have a scorecard. 

We have an elaborate G/L structure and 


budgeting process that allows us to see 

over the mountain as a “what if” effect 

on each decision we make. 

Finally there is TATE, The Aristo Train 

Engineer. TATE is a character many of 

you may have conversed with via email. 

TATE answers many of your 

questions about our products, provides 

assistance to customers needing help 

and listens to concerns. TATE 

provides us with objective feedback 

allowing us to react to any issues that 

may arise and provide you with a better 

product. Who exactly is TATE you may 

ask. Is TATE an individual or multiple 

people within the Aristo-Craft Team? 

Could it have been TATE standing next 

to you when you visited the Aristo- 

Craft Booth at a recent show? Well, 

that is a company secret. 

We are also blessed with a host of 

dedicated suppliers, great wholesalers 

and dealers. Of course you the 

customers and everyone plays a role on 

the team. These are the people that 

make up our concentrated effort to 

bring exciting product to you. I don’t 

mean to leave out the factory-production 

team, but that’s another story for 

another day. 

Team Aristo is a dedicated G-Gauge 

concerted effort to bring you the best 

G-Gauge product. We are not a toy 

company, but a Hobby Company 

providing operating scale models to 

hobbyists. You will not see our products 

in big box mass merchants, but 

only with dedicated hobby suppliers 

that specialize in the model train arena.

The 6 th Annual East Coast Large Scale 

Show Was A Hit! 

I hope that all of you can understand my 

bias on this subject. This was my first year 

as show manager and by all accounts it was 

a big success! This year’s show was double 

the size of the 4 th and 5 th York, PA shows. 

While no major growth is projected for the 

2004 show, plans are already in the works 

to accommodate more vendors and two 

additional layouts. 

Without trying to name all of the vendors 

and clubs, and especially the Large Scale 

Enthusiast who attended, I would like to 

thank all of those who worked to make this 

years show as successful as it was. You 

guys made me look like I knew what I was 

doing. Thanks again, for suffering through 

me while I learn the ropes. 

The Unofficial Saturday Night get together 

in the Crown American Room at the 

Holiday Inn was an even bigger hit than last 

year’s event. All of those that attended had 

a good time. 

For those of you who missed the ECLSTS, 

start making plans now. The 2004 show 

will be held on the 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th of April 

2004 at the York, PA Expo and Fairgrounds. 

2004’s 7 th Annual ECLSTS is already in 

the planning stages 

If you loved this years show, hopefully as 

the man says “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet” 

The 2004 show will be much different from 

the first 3 shows held at York. Plans are 

underway to have a Saturday Night Family 

Function and other events at the ECLSTS. 

Part of the Saturday Night Family Function 

is rumored to be an Ice Cream social. 

There are a lot of things that I won’t go into 

as they are in the planning stages. But I can 

tell you this, it is not going to be like 

anything that you have experienced to date. 

Look for the hours to be a little different 

next year as well. Due to many requests 

both the show and the seminars will start at 

9am. This will give some of you who like 

to get an early start just that chance. 

BTW folks we have already started to 

register dealers for the 2004 show and 

applications are coming every day in the 

mail. So if you’re a vendor and you have 

not mailed yours, make sure that you do so 

soon.

2. The receipt must be ITEMIZED, clearly showing the following.. 

- Which Aristo-Craft items were purchased (each item must be individually listed on the receipt) 

- The price in which each Aristo-Craft item was purchased at 

- The date when the Aristo-Craft items were purchased 

- The name, address, and telephone of the hobby store from where the item was purchased 

- The name, address, and telephone of the person buying the Aristo-Craft products. 

- An invoice number (extremely preferable, but not mandatory) 

Cash register receipts are NOT acceptable for this sales program and will be returned to the person who sent in the sales request without 

it being processed. We recommend that, if you receive a cash register receipt from your place of purchase, you ask for an itemized receipt 

instead. 

3. Sales requests are not backordered. Sale items are selected from products that are in stock in the Aristo-Craft warehouse during the 

period of the sale. We reserve the right to send you a product of comparable price and quality of our choice if sales items are out of stock. 

Customer selections of specific roadnames are subject to availability. 

4. Purchases must be made during the time period designated in the sales sheet. Your sales request must be received by us in 

the same time period. There are no exceptions. All sales requests that do not meet this criteria will be returned to the person who sent it in. 

5. Sales are only for items designated in the Aristo-Craft sales sheet and do not pertain to any other Aristo-Craft items that are not 

mentioned. Sales requests that do not meet this criteria will not be processed. If there are any questions of interpretation of what is on sale for 

the current month, please contact Aristo-Craft. Aristo-Craft is NOT responsible for any sales advertised by dealers and or retailers. 

6. The Aristo-Craft items you purchase from your dealer must be in stock. They cannot be backordered. You must take delivery on 

the purchased items from your dealer during the period of the sale. Sales requests that do not meet this criteria will be returned to the person 

who sent it in. 

7a. Purchased items must be new, “first-use” items. Used, secondhand, and or auctioned (including internet auction) items are not 

acceptable for this sale. 

7b. Items that are “cross-sold” (i.e., from consumer to consumer, or from dealer to dealer) are not acceptable for this sale. Consumer 

sales must be “dealer to consumer” only. Dealer sales must be “distributor to dealer” only.

10. Aristo-Craft reserves the right to make the final decision as to whether a submitted receipt is valid for the Aristo-Craft Sales

SOUTHERN PACIFIC SANTA FE SD-45 

In the 1980’s the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific intended to 

merge. A bright color scheme of Southern Pacific red, Santa Fe 

yellow, and black was created. Santa Fe SD-45 #5394 emerged 

from the paint shop painted in the new color scheme and a bold 

“SPSF” emblazoned on the sides. This locomotive was possibly 

the only SD-45 to wear the SPSF lettering. The SPSF lettering 

was only on the locomotive for a short time making SD-45 #5394 

truly unique.

New Items News 

Two new buildings are in development. The first building is ART-7204 

an Interlocking Switch Tower that is very reminiscent of those found 

along the right of ways here in the central and eastern US. The second 

building is ART-7210 a small 1940’s to 1950’s style Tract or 

Craftsman Type Home that will feature lighting and include a porch 

light. 

Work is progressing on the 2-8-8-2 Mallet Steam Locomotive. The 

goal is to have the locomotive on the market by the end of the year. 

Look for an article about the Mallet in an upcoming issue of the 

Insider. 

We expect to have test shots for the new Wabash Company 

"Roadrailer" trailers in May. Keep an eye on the website for photos 

when they become available. With luck we will have the Roadrailers 

by the end of the year. 

We expect to have drawings for the Cylindrical Hopper and GP-40 

soon. Further development of these models will occur when the 

drawings arrive.
