Wednesday, January 13, <strong>1937</strong><br />
Chancy COPLEN, aged 92, a pioneer resident of Newcastle township, died at his home in Talma at<br />
10:55 o’clock Wednesday morning. Death was due to complications incident to old age and followed an<br />
illness of four weeks.<br />
<strong>The</strong> deceased was born in New Jersey, Ohio on May 8, 1844 and was the son of Asa and Lecrisa<br />
COPLEN. When he was twelve years of age his parents came to Indiana settling on a farm in Newcastle<br />
township. Since that time the deceased has resided in the Talma vicinity.<br />
For many years, Mr. Coplen was a farmer and later was a rural route carrier from the Talma postoffice.<br />
His wife, who was Miss Jane HILL, and whom he married in a ceremony which was performed in this city,<br />
preceded him in death in 1920, since which time he has lived alone.<br />
Survivors are two sons, Allie COPLEN, Etna Green, and Grover COPLEN, Des Moines, Iowa;<br />
daughter, Mrs. Mertie WALTZ, Talma, and a stepson, Charles PRIMER, Hazelgreen, Missouri. Three<br />
children preceded him in death. <strong>The</strong>y were Claude [COPLEN], who died in infancy, Mrs. Bert DUVALL<br />
and Mrs. Frank COLLINS.<br />
<strong>The</strong> funeral arrangements will not be completed until definite word is received from the son, Grover<br />
Coplen. <strong>The</strong> services will be held in the Christian Church at Talma with burial in the Reichter cemetery<br />
near Talma.<br />
Thursday, January 14, <strong>1937</strong><br />
Funeral services for the late Chancy COPLEN, aged 92, who died at his home in Talma, Wednesday<br />
morning, will be held from the Christian Church at Talma at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. F. M. KENNEDY of<br />
Talma will officiate and interment will be made in the Reichter cemetery. In the obituary carried in <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>News</strong>-<strong>Sentinel</strong> yesterday the name of a daughter, Mrs. Anna WOLF of Talma was omitted.<br />
John HERBICK, aged 74, a life long resident of Richland township, died at his farm home one-quarter<br />
of a mile west of the Grandview Evangelical Church northwest of the city at 11:20 o’clock Wednesday<br />
night. He had been ill five months with a complication of diseases during four weeks of which time he was<br />
in a serious condition.<br />
<strong>The</strong> deceased was born on a farm in Richland township on May 7, 1862. His parents were Adam and<br />
Elizabeth HERBICK. In a ceremony which was performed in Plymouth on October 16, 1890 he was<br />
married to Elizabeth KUHN. Mr. Herbick was a member of the Grandview Evangelical Church.<br />
Survivors are the widow, daughter Mrs. Herman STEININGER and a granddaughter. An infant son<br />
preceded his father in death.<br />
<strong>The</strong> funeral services will be held from the Grandview Evangelical Church at 2 o’clock Sunday<br />
afternoon with Rev. Philip HANEY in charge. Burial will be made in the cemetery at Richland Center.<br />
Mrs. Elizabeth RARRICK, aged 75, of South Bend, former resident of this city and of the Monterey<br />
community, died at her home in South Bend Wednesday after an illness of two months due to heart trouble.<br />
She was a member of the Ladies of Maccabees of this city.<br />
Mrs. Rarrick was born May 20, 1862, in Monterey, Ind. She went to South Bend 12 years ago from<br />
Monterey. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Raymond SCHEUER, Mrs. J. R. BYRER, and Mrs.<br />
William A. BUTLER, all of South Bend; one sister, Mrs. Lena
