OUR 3 YEAR BUSINESS PLAN IS NOW A ONE YEAR 

PLAN! 

Agility and speed are an important part of what makes a business 

successful. Five-year business plans became anchors for 

companies during the ’90s. Three-year business plans became the 

rage, and now they’re a thing of the past too. We know, because 

we had one. It was a great planning tool, but it was slowing down 

our results. Today, I’m pleased to tell you that we’ve adopted a oneyear 

planning cycle! 

We tore up the three-year plan. We’re going to deliver bottom line 

business results in one-third the time. That means more products 

with more features for you. It also means more hard work for us. 

How will we accomplish this? By condensing three years work into 

one year. We’re now more agile and have strengthened our ability 

to deliver product with greater speed. I’ve raised the expectations 

for everyone in my organization. Personally, I’m committed to a 

“what ever it takes” attitude to satisfy you. If that means a 100-hour 

workweek this year, I’ll do it. 

I strongly believe the foundation for this increase in speed is in 

place. We have a solid product line to build on, and we have the 

talented people to make it happen. Our development engineers have 

provided products that are the best of the best, and it’s now time to 

maximize this effort. 

Just think about this year’s agenda: 

• The Mikado was the first 

step. It reached the market in 

the first few weeks of ’03 and it’s a 

hit! With the new, patented, 24 ball bearing 

drive system, metal side rods, new die cast drivers, three fly 

wheels, patented smoke system, new Vanderbilt Tender and our 

DCC/RCC ready plug & play board, this new large steam locomotive 

is receiving rave reviews. 

• Our upgraded Pacific will go into production when the factory 

comes back from the Chinese New Year’s break. With upgrades like 

our all-new gearbox, flywheels, metal side rods, patented smoke 

system and plug & play board, this long time favorite is sure to be a 

hit. We’ve given it our patented independent ball bearing inner 

gearboxes that allow a new level of reliable power regardless of 

track condition. The Pacific is a very popular locomotive and now it’s 

upgraded with all of our innovative technologies. It will be a strong 

performer and one of the best running of the Twenty First Century 

locomotives on your layout.

Let me say both locomotives are extremely

• Our latest FA and FB units are now 

arriving. They too have been upgraded. 

We’ve lowered the height by 3/16 th of an 

inch for improved prototypical accuracy and 

appearance. This change also means they 

match all of our newly lowered freight cars 

and our standard heavy weight passenger 

cars. In addition, we have moved up to all 

new etched brass screening, our new 

smoke system and our plug & play pc 

board. We continue to utilize our acclaimed 

two-axle ball bearing truck. To celebrate the 

thirteenth anniversary of this product, we

• The Dash-9 molds are complete. We have 

moved into the pre-production phase of this 

project. We spent months researching the 

loco including weeks photographing all of 

the super detail points. Then spent almost a 

year to draw engineering cad cam files to 

make sure it was not only accurate, but 

also cost effective to manufacture and 

assemble. Also, we’ve designed it for long 

term operational effectiveness and easy 

disassembly for those few times it may 

require maintenance and for ease in 

installing sound cards or DCC/RCC. 

Customer reaction to the mold test-shot 

model is more positive than any we’ve 

heard since we began to design and 

manufacture large-scale trains in 1988. The 

raves from customers predict an exceptionally 

strong seller. We believe this loco will 

be the biggest winner in a year of big 

winners! There are more Dash-9s than any 

other modern locomotive and we know 

most of you want to see them on your 

Large-Scale railroad. Don’t forget, this is the 

locomotive used in the Microsoft virtual 

reality train engineer computer game. It has 

incredible sight recognition and popularity. 

We will do a gull wing roof just for the ATSF 

and BNSF versions to be roadname 

authentic. All features and performance of 

the award winning SD-45 will be included. 

I believe once you see this locomotive, 

you’ll agree with me that it will be our 

model of the decade, not just the year. 

WOW! Is this better than sliced bread? 

Team Aristo thinks so…and you will too. 

The Dash-9 will pull more with the modern 

cars we’ll be offering to go along with it. 

• The “piece-de-resistance” is the 

MALLET! If ever there was ever a 

locomotive to fall in love with, this is the 

one. It’s an articulated 2-8-8-2 giant, but 

will maneuver 8’ diameter curves. Why? 

Because it uses two of our now proven 

Mikado 8 wheel drives with both sets 

cleverly articulated by our chief engineer, 

Mr. Song. The solution is superb. We’ve 

had many inquiries on how we were going 

to do this and numerous suggestions as to 

how it should be done. When I finally 

revealed our technique, it stunned those 

offering their opinions and they now agree 

on how effective it will be. The molds are 

in the works, but the drive system 

including drivers, gears and die cast side 

rods are already finished. One of our goals 

this year is to capture both the best diesel 

and steam locomotive award while 

offering the best selling and most affordable 

product line. The Mallet is a unique, 

desirable, impressive locomotive and it will 

run like clockwork. How many do you need 

on your railroad? 

• A GP-40 will cap off our locomotive line this 

year. It will be made with more detail and 

fidelity to scale than any offering in its class. 

Hundreds of photos have been taken at the 

Baltimore Railroad Museum where one of 

these beasts resides. Our design team has 

poured over the pictures and builder’s 

drawings to be sure we have the right 

components and measurements to include in 

the project. There will be no borrowed 

inaccurate parts and no sliders. Of course 

we’ll include our proven smoke system, DCC/ 

RCC plug & play board, our sound ready 

system to accept you favorite sound, 

outstanding traction delivered by weight not 

traction tires that restrict power pickup, and 

Aristo-Craft steel wheels fans appreciate so 

much. Our 2-axle truck powers it, so it will 

run reliably on 5’ diameter track with no 

problems.

ARISTO-CRAFT GIVES THE FA/FB 

A NEW LOOK! 

You may have noticed some of the coming 

changes in the newer version of the 

Aristo-Craft FA as early as last year. What 

you saw was a work of art in progress. 

The Aristo-Craft FA dates all the way back 

to around 1988. It was the first diesel 

produced by Aristo-Craft, and the only 

Aristo-Craft diesel produced in Korea. 

While this was the first North American 

Diesel mass produced by any large-scale 

company and an instant sales success it 

was not without its problems. Some of the 

Korean Versions, while following the 

instructions from the engineers at Aristo- 

Craft lacked a reliable motor block. Almost 

immediately Aristo-Craft recognized and 

identified the problem and stopped Korean 

production. The FA/FB molds were 

transferred to a factory China and the end 

result has been history. 

The Aristo-Craft FA/FB has been sold in so 

many paint schemes and road names and 

in so many runs that no one at Aristo-Craft 

is sure of how many were ever made. 

Estimates run somewhere over 30,000. 

This is phenomenal considering that it is 

estimated the entire Large Scale population 

in North American is only around 70,000. 

Then again I have a total of 10 FA/FB units 

in 5 AB sets and have two of the ABA 

sets on order. I know of others who have 

more than a few of these pulling both 

freight and passenger trains, just like those 

on real roads. 

Four of my fist eight FA/FB’s were made in 

Korea and were adequate running 

locomotives. I did not encounter any of the 

early problems reported in these locomotives. 

Three years ago I rebuilt the first 

eight with all new Aristo-Craft Ball Bearing 

motor blocks. This was a winning 

combination, as they have run hundreds of 

hours since then. Several of my old FA/

FB’s had over 1000 hours on them with 

very minor problems. Most of the problems 

that I personally encountered were with 

the brass bearings in the side frames 

wearing out. That was a part of the 

normal wear and tear on these old timers.

In the past five years Aristo-Craft has 

been steadily upgrading their locomotives, 

and the FA is the next locomotive to fully 

benefit from this upgrade process. The 

newest version of the RS3 has been on 

the market for a little over a year now and 

the latest version was an overwhelming 

success. 

The Changes: 

Perhaps the biggest and most noticeable 

change for the 2003 version of the FA/FB 

are cosmetic. It has been lowered for a 

more prototypical appearance. An etched 

metal grillwork has replaced the molded 

unit used on earlier production FA/FB 

locomotives. Aluminum colored trim has 

replaced the gold trim around windows. 

The smoke unit covers are now painted. 

Blackened or painted handrails and grab 

irons have replaced the brass rails. 

On the mechanical side, while all of the 

2003 units have the powerful motor blocks 

with ball bearings and CNC Machined 

blackened wheels in use for several years 

the traction tires are gone. This has also 

permitted the addition of extra weight. 

Internally, modular PC boards with plug and 

play capabilities for sound, DCC & Radio 

Control have been added. Plugs for Battery 

Operation and speaker for sound installation 

also have been included. Perhaps the 

biggest addition is the patented Super 

Smoke Unit with burn out protection in the 

FA units. 

There will be a “running change” preformed 

on the FA/FB locomotives. When the large 

stock of plastic fan covers is exhausted at 

the factory, they will be replaced with 

etched metal fan covers similar to the fan 

covers on the latest version of the RS-3’s. 

Furthermore, the FB unit will also receive 

the Super Smoke Unit when production 

abilities allow. 

The old standards like the detailed side 

frames with springs, headlights, interior cab 

lighting and full interior cab details continue. 

The FA/FB will still require a minimum of 5foot 

diameter curves to operate properly. 

I first saw the production samples of these 

back in October and was wowed by the 

changes. I have been eagerly awaiting the 

two sets that I have on order. The old sets 

have already been promised out to new 

homes in the large-scale community. 

For a limited time only these new locomotives 

are going to offered in ABA sets (ART- 

22000-3) after that you will be able to pick 

the up as FA or FA/FB sets. At this time there 

are no plans to offer the FB’s as a single 

item.



The initial road names the ABA sets are to 

be offered in at an MSRP of $500.00 are 

The Baltimore and Ohio, Union Pacific, 

Pennsylvania, Rio Grande, Santa Fe 

(Silver/Red War bonnet) and the Napa 

Valley wine train. The paint and graphics 

on these far exceed those of the early 

issues of these locomotives which set a 

hallmark for graphics that is often imitated 

but seldom exceeded by others.

Ron’s Ramblings:

First Field Reports on the Mikado! 

After what seemed like forever to many of us 

the Mikado has finally arrived and is being run 

on layouts all over the country. The first reports 

from the field have been rave reviews. I know 

both of mine are proving to be smooth runners 

and any gear noise seems to disappear after 

about 30-60 minutes of run. 

I am getting mixed reports on the pulling power 

of the Mikado. With so many variables due to 

type of car, type of wheels and grades it seems 

the Mikado is up to most task it is assigned. I 

know from experience it will handle my full load 

of Heavyweight Passenger cars even though it 

is a freight engine. I have run both of mine 

double headed as well. I don’t need to but it 

sure looks impressive. I can’t wait until the 

weather gets better to see how many of the 

100-ton coal hoppers I can get behind one of 

these. 

The new Mikado features the modular gearbox 

first developed for the SD45. Other features 

include new die cast side rods, the patented 

super smoke unit, and plug and play sound and 

DCC/RCC ready PC boards. The Mikado is an all 

around winner. 

The new Vanderbilt Tender is nothing short of 

museum quality and a fine looking complement 

to the Mikado. It comes as standard equipment 

where it was used as a standard tender by the 

owning Railroad. The newly redesigned Pacific 

is right on the heels of the Mikado. 

Endangered Species: North American 

Bulkhead Flat Car. 

Here is an item that a lot of us folks here in the 

east don’t see a lot of anymore. From what I 

understand the folks in the west don’t see them 

like they used to either. With much of our 

lumber is now coming from off shore and the 

advent of container shipping, the Bulk Head Flat 

Car is slowly disappearing from North American 

Railroads. 

Aristo-Craft is one of only two large-scale 

manufactures that has produced a 1/29-scale 

Bulkhead Flat Car. The sales of this type of car 

have remained steady over the years with 

several different road names produced since 

the cars were first introduced. These are 

nicely detailed and rigged for large loads. 

Usually when hauling big loads of pipe or steel 

beams these cars had a lot of scrap lumber 

used to stabilize the load and permit easier 

unloaded at the other end.

Many companies would stop there. We’re 

going to bring you more, more quickly than 

ever before. The locomotive introductions 

are staggering on their own, but there’s 

even more. Our #6 switch will be delivered 

shortly. It will revolutionize G Gauge 

operation to scale running. No more do we 

have to rely on toy like, tight radius 

switches. Also, due shortly is it’s companion 

piece; a 19.5% crossing that allows for high 

speed switching. Does it get any better? 

Also in our track line will be an absolutely 

scale 90-degree crossing. Here again you 

can throw out your toy crossings. This is 

made with insert mold injection plastic 

techniques, not yet seen in the G Gauge 

community. Is a Wye far behind? 

Our Church and the accompanying graveyard 

have been a huge hit. Our bride and 

groom figure sales have climbed as well, 

completing a perfect Church marriage. We 

will soon have tongue-in-cheek epitaphs to 

go on to those tombstones along with a 

second set to expand this popular accessory. 

A Switch Tower is next in the line-up of 

buildings and we will have samples soon. 

For years we’ve set the pace in the U.S. G 

Gauge market. Now we’re accelerating it. 

Aristo-Craft is delivering three years worth 

of new product in a single year. Our 

commitment is to continue to grow the hobby 

and to continue to grow our success so we 

can do even more next year. We’ll increase 

our speed and agility without a degradation 

of customer service, on time / instant 

deliveries, and superior warranty service. 

The end result will be a great year for 

Aristo-Craft Train’s customers.

Preview of the 2003 East Coast Large Scale 

Train Show 

By the time you read this, we will be just 

weeks or even days away from the next 

East Cost Large Scale Show. I don’t know 

about you but to me this is getting to be 

better than a family reunion. I get to see 

folks I like and I get to see and buy a lot of 

the Large Scale Train Merchandise that I 

can’t find anywhere else. 

This year’s show, which will be held on April 

4, 5, and 6, 2003, is going to have a little 

more than twice the vendor and display 

space of this years show. If you have 

never been to York Fairgrounds and 

Exposition Center that is close to one and 

one half a football field full of trains, Large 

Scale Trains. 

Many of the vendors in attendance at the 

show will be there for the first time. So 

please show them your appreciation for their 

attendance at the show. Many others have 

returned for another year. We do have a list 

started for 2004 that has over a dozen 

vendors who could not attend this year’s 

show because of other commitments. So 

not only does this year’s show look solid, it 

is already starting to be a “Have to be there” 

for the Vendors. 

It is both you, the Clubs and Individuals who 

provide Displays and Modular Layouts and 

the Vendors who all make this a success. It 

is my guess we will either pass the Queen 

Mary Show for size and attendance this 

year or next. We have doubled this year’s 

show over the size of last years show and 

are still suffering from growing pains. We 

have kept all of the aisles to a minimum of 10 

feet wide to make sure that the show 

remains an enjoyable event for all.

Saturday night. Say hello to a lot of the old 

timers in this hobby. We will be in the Crown 

America Room from 7-11 PM. This room is 

open to all that attend the show. It is not a 

Big Trains List, LSOL, MyLargeScale.com or 

any other gathering. The room is set aside 

for folks to socialize and have a good time. 

In other words it is neutral territory, Scale, 

Religion, and Politics will not be discussed.

1. The ORIGINAL receipt is required to be sent to Aristo-Craft for approval of sales request. Computer generated copies and 

photocopies of receipts are strictly prohibited. Copies of receipts will be returned to the person who sent in the sales request without it being 

processed. Aristo-Craft will send the free offer directly to the customer and the sales dealer is not responsible for this transaction. 

2. The receipt must be ITEMIZED, clearly showing the following.. 

- Which Aristo-Craft items were purchased (each item must be individually listed on the receipt) 

- The price in which each Aristo-Craft item was purchased at 

- The date when the Aristo-Craft items were purchased 

- The name, address, and telephone of the hobby store from where the item was purchased 

- The name, address, and telephone of the person buying the Aristo-Craft products. 

- An invoice number (extremely preferable, but not mandatory) 

Cash register receipts are NOT acceptable for this sales program and will be returned to the person who sent in the sales request without 

it being processed. We recommend that, if you receive a cash register receipt from your place of purchase, you ask for an itemized receipt 

instead. 

3. Sales requests are not backordered. Sale items are selected from products that are in stock in the Aristo-Craft warehouse during the 

period of the sale. We reserve the right to send you a product of comparable price and quality of our choice if sales items are out of stock. 

Customer selections of specific roadnames are subject to availability. 

4. Purchases must be made during the time period designated in the sales sheet. Your sales request must be received by us in 

the same time period. There are no exceptions. All sales requests that do not meet this criteria will be returned to the person who sent it in. 

5. Sales are only for items designated in the Aristo-Craft sales sheet and do not pertain to any other Aristo-Craft items that are not 

mentioned. Sales requests that do not meet this criteria will not be processed. If there are any questions of interpretation of what is on sale for 

the current month, please contact Aristo-Craft. Aristo-Craft is NOT responsible for any sales advertised by dealers and or retailers. 

6. The Aristo-Craft items you purchase from your dealer must be in stock. They cannot be backordered. You must take delivery on 

the purchased items from your dealer during the period of the sale. Sales requests that do not meet this criteria will be returned to the person

7a. Purchased items must be new, “first-use” items. Used, secondhand, and or auctioned (including internet auction) items are not

In the 1980’s the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific intended to merge. A bright color scheme of Southern Pacific red, Santa Fe 

yellow, and black was created. Santa Fe SD-45 #5394 emerged from the paint shop painted in the new color scheme and a 

bold “SPSF” emblazoned on the sides. This locomotive was possibly the only SD-45 to wear the SPSF lettering. The SPSF 

lettering was only on the locomotive for a short time making SD-45 #5394 truly unique.
