JOHN YARMUTH<br />
Member of Congress<br />
U.S. House of Representatives<br />
U.S. Representative John Yarmuth represents Kentucky's<br />
3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of<br />
Representatives. Passionate about honest and open<br />
government, as well as issues involving working families and<br />
students, Congressman Yarmuth sought and received<br />
appointments to the Committee on Education and Labor<br />
(Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and<br />
Competitiveness and Subcommittee on Healthy Families and<br />
Communities) as well as the Committee on Oversight and<br />
Government Reform (Subcommittee on National Security<br />
and Foreign Affairs and Subcommittee on Information,<br />
Policy Census, and National Archives). He serves as a<br />
member of the Freshman Democratic class, an At Large Whip<br />
for the majority party, and he was named 2007 Legislator of<br />
the Year by the Kentucky Reading Association and<br />
"Outstanding New Member of Congress" by the Committee<br />
for Education Funding, the largest non-partisan education<br />
organization in the nation.<br />
Though best known for his work in the media, Yarmuth's<br />
diverse career, prior to entering the political arena, gave him<br />
a solid background in policy, business, higher education, and<br />
healthcare.
Yarmuth previously worked on Capitol Hill as Legislative<br />
Aide for Kentucky Senator Marlow Cook from 197 1 to 1974,<br />
before moving back to Louisville, to publish Louisville Today<br />
Magazine. He went on to work as Associate Vice President<br />
of <strong>University</strong> Relations at the <strong>University</strong> of Louisville and<br />
Vice President of a local healthcare firm.<br />
In 1990, Yarmuth founded LEO Newsweekly, a free<br />
publication with approximately 150,000 monthly readers.<br />
With Yarmuth as editor, LEO won nearly 100 Metro<br />
Louisville Journalism Awards, 16 of which were awarded to<br />
Yamuth for his editorial and column writing. He owned the<br />
paper from 1990 to 2003, and continued writing his columns<br />
through 2005.<br />
On television he debated local and national politics as<br />
co-host and commentator on WAVE 3's "Yarmuth &<br />
Ziegler" in 2003 and "Hot Button" in 2004 and 2005.<br />
Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Congressman<br />
Yarmuth graduated from Atherton High School where he<br />
served as student government president. He went on to earn<br />
a degree in American Studies from Yale <strong>University</strong>. He and<br />
his wife Cathy have been married for 25 years. Their son<br />
Aaron graduated from Indiana <strong>University</strong> in 2006.

ACADEMIC ATTIRE<br />
As early as the twelfth century the first modern colleges and universities, at Bologna<br />
and Paris, were the centers of European learning. The usual garb of the time, for both church-<br />
men and laymen, was a long gown necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings of the<br />
day. Scholars, generally members of church orders, wore such robes, as well as hoods to<br />
protect their shaved heads. Later, skull caps were worn on the head, and the hood became<br />
a cape that could be pulled over the head in unpleasant weather. The hood was also some-<br />
times used to collect alms from the more affluent members of the community. As more<br />
colleges and universities were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adopted<br />
by their faculties. Variations indicated various ranks within the institutions. Strict rules were<br />
published, and sometimes tailors who departed from the authorized design were punished.<br />
The academic hat was a later development adapted from the headdress of the ordinary<br />
people. Academically was it was originally worn as a symbol of the master's degree and<br />
existed in various forms: some were round, some were square, and some had a tuft in the<br />
center. The flat, square "mortar board" of today originated in Oxford.<br />
Academic costume came to America in 1754 with the founding of King's College,<br />
now Columbia <strong>University</strong>. Styles became quite varied, as they were in Europe, but in 1895<br />
a group of American college and university representatives met to establish a uniform sys-<br />
tem of academic apparel for this country. This led to the establishment in 1902 of an "In-<br />
tercollegiate Code of Academic Costume." The American Council on Education formed a<br />
committee in 1932 to review the 1895 code, and it was again reviewed and revised in 1960.<br />
There are today three basic types of gowns and hoods. The associate and bachelor's<br />
gowns have pointed sleeves and are designed to be worn closed. The master's gown is de-<br />
signed with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, and with an arc cut away at the front of the<br />
sleeve. It may be worn either open or closed. The doctoral gown is a full design with volu-<br />
minous sleeves, and it also may be worn open or closed. Unlike the other two, the doctoral<br />
gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three velvet bars on the sleeves. These<br />
may be black or of a color related to the subject of the degree.<br />
Of particular interest may<br />
be the colors associated with<br />
each academic program. Arts<br />
and humanities may use white,<br />
business degrees may be light<br />
brown, education uses light<br />
blue, and science, a golden yel-<br />
low.<br />
The hoods worn by those<br />
who hold the bachelor's,<br />
master's, and doctoral degrees<br />
are lined with the official color<br />
of the institution awarding the<br />
degree. The binding or edging of<br />
the hood is of silk or velvet in<br />
the color pertaining to the sub-<br />
ject area. Doctoral hoods are<br />
longer and somewhat fuller, but<br />
the colors of the lining again are<br />
those of the institution granting<br />
the degree, and the wide edging<br />
bears the color of the subject.
