Northlands Association for Special Recreation (NASR) 

is a cooperative partnership between the Rockford, 

Freeport and Belvidere Park Districts (referred to as 

member district). NASR programs are open to any 

individual with disability-related special needs such as 

physical, mental and developmental disabilities and 

persons with mental illness, behavior disorders, visual 

and hearing impairments. 

Member district residents are invited to participate in specialty/therapeutic (TR) programs offered through any 

member district at the resident rate. For participation in Inclusion Services at a member district other than your 

own member district, you must pay the non-resident rate for that specific program.

Special Olympics Swim Team 

This year we will be working with trained swim instructors to improve our overall performance. We will practice 

each week working on swim strokes, starts, turns, and the overall rules of competition. If you like water, this is 

the sport for you. This program is great exercise and is gentle on the joints, making it possible for most everyone 

to participate. You must have a current SO Medical form on file through March 2012 or submit one at the time 

of registration.

Special Olympics Basketball 

It's time again to dig out your basketball shoes and get ready for another great season of fun and excitement. 

We will start by brushing up on our skills and then play some games against other teams. Please note that some 

games may be on weekends or weeknights other than the practice day and time. We will compete in district 

games, and gold medal winners will compete in State Games in March. You must have a current SO medical 

form on file through March 2012 or submit one at time of registration.

Special Olympics Snowshoeing 

This sport is a great way to improve your overall fitness, coordination, and endurance as well as keep you active 

in the cold weather. We will practice each week to learn proper techniques and prepare for the district meet in 

January. Gold medal winners will qualify for State Winter Games in February. You must have a current SO 

medical form on file through February 2012 or submit one at time of registration.

Special Olympics Soccer 

Get your feet ready for Freeport Park District Special Olympics Soccer team. The team will compete locally at 

the Area Spring Games at Harlem High School. If the team places first they will advance to the Summer State 

Games in Normal, IL in June. Athletes must wear tennis shoes, shorts/sweatpants, long knee-high socks and have 

several layers of clothing. Please note that athletes participating in SO track and field or SO swimming cannot 

participate in soccer as their competitions are on the same days. Athletes must have a current SO medical form 

on file through June 2012 or be able to attain one at the time of registration.

Special Olympics Track and Field 

Get ready to test your speed and agility. Athletes in Illinois who compete in Track and Field compete locally at 

the Area Spring Games. Gold medal winners are eligible to advance to the State level competition held at the

Kathy Blomberg, a lady skilled in making her own jewelry, is going to help us make our own creations that are

Soccer Skills Training 

Join us as our Special Olympics coach Rick Fischer teaches you the basics of soccer. Whether you are a beginner 

or just want a refresher course, this is just for you! We will be learning soccer terms, how to dribble, pass, shoot, 

defend, and so much more! If you are thinking about joining the SO soccer team in the spring, it is 

recommended that you take this workshop.

Winneshiek Theater 

"It's a Wonderful Life," one of today's most popular Christmas stories, is coming to Freeport as a Radio Play! This 

story effectively touches upon one basic truth of life that we all would like to believe -- that each of us, no matter 

how apparently insignificant, has the power to make a difference. It's a Wonderful Life asks and answers a 

question that all of us think of at one time or another: "What would this world be like if I had never been born?" 

Join us as we view this Holiday classic. *If you are a group home and plan on bringing staff to this event, you 

must register and pay for your own staff.

Get ready for the Special Olympics Basketball Season by taking part in this 3-week basketball skills course. We 

will run drills and go over the basics of basketball. This course is perfect for the beginning or the pro, and it is 

definitely recommended for new athletes considering joining the Special Olympics team.

Minnesota Mini-Trip 

Join our friends from Belvidere Park District for a mini-vacation to Minneapolis, Minnesota! We will roam the 

Mall of America, hang out by the Mississippi River, tour a local zoo, and visit other area attractions. All meals, 

lodging, transportation, attractions, and staff supervision are included. Participants should bring extra money 

for shopping and any extra attractions they wish to participate in (for example, Nick Universe Amusement Park). 

Must be 18 years or older and function on a 1:4 staff ratio to attend this trip. Please note, $50 of the cost of 

the trip is non-refundable once registered.

Cougar Basketball 

Get your orange and brown ready to go support the Highland Cougars men's basketball team. Cheer on the 

team, socialize with friends, and most importantly watch some fast paced and intense men's basketball. We will

a little money for snacks at the concessions stand.

Come join your friends at NASR for a night under the stars enjoying the outdoor cinema. Dress appropriately 

for the outdoor weather and don't forget your blanket or folding lawn chair. Grab a snack, get comfortable, 

and relax as the sun goes down and the evening begins. Snacks will be provided.

Lights, Camera, Action! Come spend your evening with us and catch the greatest and newest flick at Lindo
