Foundation
for the Memory
of the Shoah
The Foundation for the Memory
of the Shoah was created in 2000 as part
of the recognition and compensation
for the Holocaust in France.
The initial endowment of 393 million
euros came from the restitution by
the government and certain financial
institutions of dormant accounts from
expropriated Jews living in France
who were killed during the Holocaust.
With the funds generated from this
endowment, the Foundation subsidizes
the Shoah Memorial in Paris; supports
projects bearing on research and the
history of the Shoah; provides assistance
to survivors in need; and encourages
the transmission of Jewish culture
and heritage.
The Foundation for the Memory
of the Shoah upholds key principles:
respect for historical truth; responsibility
and solidarity with victims of anti-Semitic
laws; recognition of the values of
Judaism; and accessibility for everyone.

Memory
and Transmission
A
key element of the mission set by the Foundation
for the Memory of the Shoah is to keep
alive the memory of the Shoah and its implications.
It therefore supports memorial activities (commemorations,
plaques, steles) and projects that transmit
this memory, while it also brings to light littleknown
historical aspects, through films, exhibitions,
plays, and the collection of audiovisual archives.
The Foundation also funds renovation projects
for memorial sites in France.
Jewish Culture
T
he Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah
promotes the transmission of the millenniaold
Jewish culture, which the Nazis tried to annihilate.
The goal is to explore the diversity of
the Jewish identity and to transmit it, particularly
to a younger generation. The Jewish Culture
Committee stresses Jewish education, the fight
against anti-Semitism and the translation of key
