Back in 1842, Queen Victoria
laughed when her ministers
told her the Royal Navy had
laid claim in her name to an
uninhabited, rocky island on
the South China coast. The
consensus, of Victoria's
subjects, in the language of
today, was simply: Who
needs it? It would never
amount to much; never
develop any trade for Britain
and yield either gold or glory
for Her Majesty. Today
booming, growing,
prosperous Hong Kong is
keeping the British economy
going as a world great
shopping center and tourist's
paradise
