<strong>Local</strong> <strong>Students</strong> <strong>Tapped</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Prestigious</strong> <strong>Governor's</strong> <strong>Schools</strong><br />
Gastonia, N.C. – Fifteen Gaston County high school students were chosen to<br />
attend the prestigious North Carolina Governor’s School.<br />
Held annually at two sites, <strong>Governor's</strong> School East is at Meredith College in<br />
Raleigh, and <strong>Governor's</strong> School West is at Salem College in Winston-Salem.<br />
Governor’s School is designed to provide a six-week residential summer<br />
enrichment program <strong>for</strong> 800 students. The experience provides an opportunity <strong>for</strong><br />
outstanding students to explore the latest developments, problems and theories in<br />
the various fields of the arts and science.<br />
Nominations <strong>for</strong> the North Carolina <strong>Governor's</strong> School are made by each local high<br />
school, reviewed by a local committee, and submitted to a state committee <strong>for</strong> final<br />
selections. The selection process is extremely competitive. <strong>Students</strong> are chosen<br />
based on academic standing or ability to per<strong>for</strong>m in an area of concentration such<br />
as dance, art, music and drama.<br />

“Congratulations to all students who participated in the <strong>Governor's</strong> School process,” states<br />
Superintendent L. Reeves McGlohon. “This is a very challenging program. They are all<br />
to be commended <strong>for</strong> their outstanding accomplishments. We also would like to thank all<br />
principals, teachers and counselors who worked so hard to ensure that these students<br />
receive such a challenging opportunity.”<br />
A distinguished faculty chosen from public and private schools, colleges and universities<br />
and private businesses and organizations serve as teachers in the program. Nationally<br />
recognized consultants also provide instruction.<br />
The Gaston County senior high school students listed below were chosen to attend the<br />
<strong>2013</strong> North Carolina Governor’s <strong>Schools</strong> from June 16 to July 20, <strong>2013</strong>, with a break from<br />
July 4- July 7, <strong>2013</strong>.<br />
