Introducing the PD- p product range
the level data logger was developed for extremly
rough use in harsh environments. it is
therefore suitable for reliable acquisition and
storage of water level and temperature in level
pipes and boreholes. the Pd- is also a durable
device for data acquisition in water tanks
or surface waters.
the sensor cable with an integrated pressure
compensation capillary prevents measuring
Basic PD- p version
errors by compensating fluctuations in barometric
air pressure. its low power consumption
and large data memory enable effortless recording
of water levels and temperatures over
extended periods of time. Captured measured
values can be recorded at time-synchronised
intervals.
recording and storage of levels and temperatures in adjustable storage intervals of between 1s and
4h. the data is shown graphically and in table form using ComWin software via a PC or laptop. the
data can also be retrieved via remote data transfer using GSm/GPrS.
“GSM” option
mechanically compact extension for power-saving operation of measuring sites with remote data transfer.
the pack contains a GSm/GPrS modem, a planar antenna with anti-vandalism protection in the level
cap and an energy supply. the energy is supplied either via a battery/rechargeable battery or via a solar
panel as required.
“plus” option
data storage an improved data density is desirable with natural
events more than any other. the Pd- p level
data logger offers different ways of storing data:
•
•
•
interval-oriented storage (scheduled storage)
Conditional storage with a limit value or limit
value range (relative or absolute)
Event-controlled storage
Comprehensive reporting function active report issuing when the limit value is
exceeded via a telephone call or SmS
•
•
report issued when limit values are not
reached or are exceeded (relative or absolute)
report issued when a relative value change
occurs in a certain time period
retrieval of the measurement values via SmS When a GSm/GPrS modem is connected, current
actual values can be retrieved at any time

ProduCtinformation Pd- p / Pd- p plus
Data storage
When extreme events occur, high time resolutions
of the data sequences are required for evaluation
and analysis purposes. outside of the extreme
event, only a low data quantity is required. the
standard Pd- p design is only capable of intervaloriented
storage. With the Pd- pplus, anything
interval-oriented storage
for each connected measuring input, the measuring
data can be recorded in an interval of between
1s and 4h (fig. 1).
Types of measurement
frequently, it is not only the recording of the
current measurement value which is necessary
in order to assess an environmental event,
but also a statistical recording of the measure-
Minimum energy requirement due to “sleep mode”
in order to construct measurement systems which
can operate at a distance from any infrastructure,
components are needed with energy management
in order to keep energy requirements at a
low level. the Pd- p range requires low levels
of energy due to a special sleep mode between
the recording intervals. Communication (e.g. data
retrieval with a GSm modem) requires the largest
amount of energy. Due to configurable time
management for the modem, the energy requirement
is significantly reduced. Taking into account
the rate time of the sensor (which guarantees
is possible, from simple interval storage through
to event-related conditional storage when natural
events occur. the conditional storage possible
with the Pd- pplus is particularly useful with
pump and surge tests.
Fig. 1: Synchronous storage of a measurement value
ment values for evaluation purposes. With this
in mind, the Pd- p range offers actual value,
maximum, minimum, average value.
a stable measurement result), each individual
sensor (level or temperature) is only switched on
for the measurement, and thus plays an important
role in saving energy. due to these energy
saving measures, long-term operation with an
autonomous energy source can be guaranteed
with a solar panel and rechargeable battery for a
standard measuring station. Even under difficult
environmental conditions such as high alpine stations,
continuous operation is secured despite the
solar panel icing up or low levels of solar power
due to a shady location during the winter.

Option „GSM“
the battery or solar GSm units are the ideal addition
for the Pd- level data logger. this is an easy way to
expand the functionality of the Pd- by remote data
transmission, making time-consuming journeys to
GSM unit battery GSM unit solar
the battery GSm unit is strikingly compact. designed
for use in level pipes, it can be integrated
into pipes of 4 inches or more in diameter without
additional mechanical construction. an opening in
the housing also allows control measurements to
be made with the electric contact meter, without
dismantling the measuring system.
Fig. 2: With Batterie and GSM-Modem
mounted in observation well .
the measuring point to read out the data a thing of
the past. Long operating periods are possible, as the
Pd- actuates the GSm modem individually.
the solar GSm unit is designed for installation on
level pipes or poles. Completely autonomous solar-powered
measuring points can be implemented
quickly and easily, even at sources or rivers,
for example.
ProduCtinformation Pd- p / Pd- p plus
“plus” option: remote data transfer, conditional storage and reporting
due to the extended functionality provided by the
optional “plus” pack, the basic version of the Pd- p
is converted into an intelligent level data logger with
conditional storage when limit values or limit value
ranges are exceeded or not reached, in order to store
the measurement values at shortened intervals when
retrieval of the measurement values via SmS
if a GSm modem is connected to the data logger, the
current measurement values of the sensors can be
retrieved at any time with the aid of SmS dispatch,
Conditional storage
in addition to the functions of the interval-oriented
storage, conditions such as a limit value or limit
value range can be defined, which trigger a sto-
Test type Explanation
absolute limit value excess
relative limit value excess
time-related limit value excess
Conditional storage with limit value
The storage is triggered as a result of definitions of
limit values which are either not reached or are exceeded.
at the same time as the synchronous storage,
Fig. 4: Absolute limit value excess: additional 1minute
asynchronous storage when limit value
is exceeded – event is recorded at high resolution
Fig. 5: Relative limit value excess: storage is
triggered when a relative measure value is
changed
natural events occur. furthermore, the optional pack
also stands out with its comprehensive reporting function
in order to issue warnings via SmS or a telephone
call. the possibility of retrieving current actual data
via SmS is of practical help in order to quickly assess
the situation on site at any time.
and shown on any mobile telephone. the data logger
responds to a request SmS with a response SmS
showing the current measurement values.
rage. in order to realise complex measuring requirements,
the following types of test can be set
for the conditional storage.
the measurement value is directly checked to determine
wither a limit value/limit range has not been
reached/has been exceeded (fig. 4)
an check of the relative change in measurement
value. measurement value change not related to
time (fig. 5)
a check of the relative change in measurement
value within a defined time period (Fig. 6),
e.g. speeds of changes, etc.
e.g. at 10-minute intervals, a conditional, asynchronous
storage can be conducted when the limit value is
exceeded, e.g. in 1-minute intervals.
Fig. 6: Time-related limit value excess: storage
in 1-minute intervals when the measurement
value changes by the value 30 in 3 minutes
– events are recorded at high resolution

ProduCtinformation Pd- p / Pd- p plus
Fig. 7: Limit value range: when the limits are
not reached or are exceeded, additional asynchronous
storage is conducted in a 5-minute
interval resolution
Comprehensive reporting function
Event-controlled storage
Depending on the definition of the limit value and
the type of test, different reporting scenarios can
be realised. the report is issued when a limit value
is exceeded/is not reached, or when an event occurs,
and the report is triggered by a combination
with another measurement value/limit value. the
report is issued by means of a relay contact for
Type of test Explanation
Conditional storage with limit
value range
if a limit value range is defined,
the data is stored when the
measurement value lies within or
outside the range (fig. 7).
the data storage of a measurement
value is conducted depending
on the entrance of one or
more events for other measurement
values, i.e. a combined switching
of measurement data (e.g.
limit value excess – fig. 8).
Fig. 8: Event-controlled storage: when a limit
value is exceeded of measurement value A
(MV A), the storage for measurement value B
(MV B) is conducted in 1-minute intervals
switching connected systems, by a modem call in
order to forward the report in warning systems, or
by SmS in order to inform individuals. the limit value
is always defined in combination with a hysteresis
value in order to prevent multiple messages
due to the fluctuating measurement values.
absolute value the measurement value is checked directly as to whether a limit
value/limit range has been exceeded (fig. 9)
relative change the report is triggered when a relative measurement change is exceeded
or not reached, not related to time (fig. 10)
time-related change the report is triggered when a relative change to the measurement
value is exceeded or not reached within a defined time period
(fig. 11), e.g. change speeds, etc.
Fig. 9: Triggering when pre-defined limit
values are absolutely exceeded
change is exceeded
the measurement value exceeds a relative
value change

Parameterising and reading data
The level data logger is configured and the stored
measurement values are read conveniently using
a PC or laptop with ComWin software.
the level data logger is connected to the computer
via the serial interface and a special connection
cable. after the level data logger type has
been selected, the parameterisation window
appears. all settings can be seen clearly in just
one single window (see fig. 1 ).
for reading the data, the convenient option is
available of reading with a single mouse click all
new measurement data which has arrived since
the last reading, and immediately showing it in
graphic/table form, or reading a specific time period
(see fig. 13). for a quick view of the data,
only the current actual values can be shown, in
order to conduct an actual value compensation,
for example.
Fig. 14: Comparative graphic e.g. of different levels
Fig. 15: Representation of the data sequences in table form
Fig. 12: Parameterisation – overview window
Fig. 13: Read data from a specific time period
the read data can be shown and stored in graphic or
table form. for comparative representations, several
curves from different level data loggers can be
combined in a single graphic or table (see figs. 14
and 15).
the graphic representation stands out for its simple
operation and automatic axis scaling of the graphic.
for professional users, a wide range of setting
options are available, such as axle scaling or zoom
functions.
the representation in table form gives all the data
in the graphic shown (see fig. 15). Rapid toggling
between graphic and table representations is possible
with a single mouse click.
With the export function, the data is stored via a
converter in Excel format, or in any format specified
by the customer.
We offer the DataWin and MetWin solution for more
comprehensive data analyses and the fully automated
retrieval of all measuring systems through to
measuring networks.
