County Elementary School
It’s a new day in the Mitchell County School System
and South Mitchell County Elementary School. Our
school has a new name, new faces, new concepts and
new beginnings; however, the faculty and staff will
have the same attitudes, spirit and soul. We will
continue to work very hard to build a solid foundation of learning. Students at SMCES will
learn a lot and have fun learning. The first week of school was very exciting and we are off to
an excellent start. Many of the teachers were happy to see former students return to the halls of
the place where the Better Education Starts Today (BEST!!) The faculty, staff, and students
have not “missed a beat” despite of all the changes and
obstacles. We look forward to a great year at South
educational philosophy holds that students learn best when
they are actively involved in their educational experience,
the lessons and activities are made to both interest and
challenge them, and the teacher makes an extra effort to
show her students how stimulating the education process
can be! She wishes to thank everyone for such a warm
welcome back to Mitchell County!
Mrs. Tarleton (left), Mrs. Coleman (right), and new
MCSS Preparing for the Flu Virus
By Kerrina Allen, MCSS Head Nurse
The Mitchell County School System is prepared to deal with the H1N1 flu virus. We have in effect a completed influenza response plan. The
plan outlines specific duties and responsibilities for each department in the school system. The Mitchell County School System’s goal is to
manage the impact of H1N1 outbreak within the school facilities by reducing the spread of viruses. We will aggressively enforce guidelines set
by the state and district health department.
Mitchell County School System Guidelines:
Students and staff will be observed and sent home when they exhibit symptoms of the virus. They will be encouraged to remain at home
from work, school and public places. Compliance is very important.
A handwashing campaign is in force.
Posters are placed throughout the schools as a reminder to cover their mouth when coughing and sneezing.
Sick children will be removed from the classroom and placed in a designated area to wait for parent pick up. Masks will be worn.
Custodial staff and bus drivers will perform cleaning duties as outlined in the response plan.
Recommendations from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to Protect your health:
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also
effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone
except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)
Keep away from others as much as possible to keep from making others sick.
Emergency Warning Signs
If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care. In children emergency
warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
• Fast breathing or trouble breathing, • Bluish or gray skin color, • Not drinking enough fluids, • Severe or persistent vomiting
• Not waking up or not interacting, • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held, • Flu-like symptoms improve but
then return with fever and worse cough.
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen, • Sudden dizziness, • Confusion,
Severe or persistent vomiting, • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough.
“Reading Rocks” Book Fair
Our Scholastic Book Fair is scheduled for September 25-October 9. We invite
you to our school to share in this celebration of books and reading. Not only
does the Book Fair help raise funds to purchase essential classroom and library
resources, it also encourages reading among our students.
As students grow older, it is so important to keep books in their lives. Students
who remain readers now are more likely to become lifelong learners. Readers
develop larger vocabularies, a greater knowledge of the world, and higher
academic achievement. In fact, studies indicate that being a reader is more
predictive of success than intelligence, economic background, or gender.
Our Book Fair provides a wide variety of books specifically selected to appeal
to middle school interests. Students will discover books that are entertaining,
inspirational, and relative to their emerging emotions. In addition, our Fair will
have bestsellers that adults will find interesting and useful. Come browse and
find books that can help your child stay connected with reading. At our Fair, we will also have a Classroom Wish List board
on display for anyone interested in helping our teachers add more books to their classroom library shelves. Classroom libraries
reinforce positive learning environments and provide all students with greater access to books.
This fall, students will be involved in the planning of our Book Fair and will put much time and energy into creating a special
event for you. We hope you will reward their efforts by making their Book Fair a big success. If for some reason you are not
able to attend the Fair in person, we encourage you to discuss the Book Fair with your child to determine what books he or she
may want to add to their personal collection.
MCHS Senior Class Meeting
On July 27, 2009, the MCHS senior class held its first meeting. Students received a
copy of their schedule and their transcript. Principal Robert Adams talked with the
parents and students about how grades matter and how students should not play
during their senior year; it can hurt them later when they are trying to meet
requirements for the Hope Scholarship. He asked that the students come to school
every day and be prepared. Mr. Adams told the parents to feel free to see him if
they have a question or concern about their child. Other topics discussed included
senior activities, senior trip, senior pictures, homecoming, and pep rally. He
concluded by telling the students that their potential is unlimited.
Brittany Williams said, “Our meeting this summer was very wonderful….we got a chance to
discuss a lot of important upcoming events not only with the 2010 seniors but with our
parents also.”
Kaysha Harris said, “The senior meeting this
summer was a great opportunity to get
information about the upcoming school year.
We also had the chance to receive our
schedules. The principal talked to us about
taking the SAT and ACT tests. We received a
lot of valuable information.”
Kedeemya Cooper said, “At the senior meeting
we dicussed about what we as seniors have to
do to make our senior year a good year and
how we have to set an example for the
underclassmen.”
MCHS Holds 4 th Annual Freshman Fest
Page 7
On August 14, Mitchell County High School held its 4 th annual Freshman Fest. The Freshman Fest is designated as a day when
incoming freshmen are invited to the high school to become acquainted with the staff and their schedule. This year’s activities
included having the students do a mock day of their schedule so that they would be familiar with their classroom teachers,
schedule, and location on the first day of school.
Academy teachers discussed the Mitchell County High School student handbook and the Code of Conduct for the Mitchell
County School System. Entertainment was provided by the freshman class. Students performed a scene from a movie in front
of parents, faculty, and visitors. Movie scenes performed included Meet the Browns, ATL, Freedom Writers, and Radio. After
skits were performed, dinner was served for the students, parents, and faculty members in attendance.
The Freshman Fest had over 85 students in attendance. Each student who participated in the Freshman Fest received a T-shirt.
Students reported at 1:00, and parents came at 5:00 for a meeting with the school’s administrators. Parents were informed about
the procedures and purpose of having an academy. Information was provided about a wide range of topics from high school
credits to dress code for freshmen. Parents were given the opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns. The Freshmen Fest
concluded at 6:30. Transportation was provided for students who needed a ride to and from the Freshman Fest.
The MCHS Freshman Academy is an extension of Mitchell County High School with a focus on ninth grade as a pivotal year
for students. The Freshman Academy is now in its fifth year of operation at MCHS. Research confirms that if students
successfully complete the ninth grade on time, their chances of graduating from high school are greatly increased. Academic
performance, discipline and attendance all tie together; our main goals in the freshman academy are to reduce the number of
ninth grade failures, increase daily attendance, and increase academic achievements. Our ultimate goal is to do whatever it takes
to make sure students are successful at Mitchell County High School.
The Day the Monster
Came to School
Mrs. Carolyn Daughtry and her students read
the story "The Day the Monster Came to
School." This story teaches the children how
to help each other follow classroom rules and
procedures. They each made a rule to help the
monster in the story. Some of the rules were
be quiet, walk and stand in the 2nd block
hallway, raise your hand, be good, no
yelling, be nice to everybody, and eat all your
lunch.

Dear Cross Country Team:
“I am writing to let you know how immensely proud I am of you at this starting point in
our season. Your commitment this summer has been awesome. I want you to be proud
of the training you have endured thus far, and look forward with anticipation to all that
we have yet to encounter as a team. Let’s stay motivated, remain positive and committed! Remember the “212 degree
mentality!” Coach Robin Crimbley
This creed is dedicated to the MCSS Cross Country Teams (MCMS and MCHS):
The Runner’s Creed:
I am a runner; therefore, I must be disciplined.
I must be disciplined in every area of my life, making right choices in difficult situations for my ultimate success.
I must be disciplined mentally so that all I am training to be will manifest physically; positive, “can do” thinking will drive
me past my mental limitations.
I am a runner; therefore, I must be committed.
I must be committed to my sport, the season, my team, and myself.
Commitment begets integrity; integrity begets respect; respect begets opportunity, and opportunity begets the chance for me
to surpass all limitations I have placed upon myself and those that have been placed upon me.
I am a runner; therefore, I must run.
I must run through the pain, blood, sweat and tears.
I must run through attitudes and opposition.
I am a runner; watch me run…..
EAGLES! To display education,
character, discipline, leadership,
sportsmanship, and talent is
natural for us because it is the
expected norm. As we climb then soar, our goals will be
met and exceeded with ease; and we, the EAGLES,
understand fully that we are representatives of our
