Hanseatic <strong>Networks</strong> <strong>in</strong> Tropical Markets<br />

livelihoods depended on bus<strong>in</strong>ess transactions with both Germany<br />

<strong>and</strong> the wider world. Men <strong>and</strong> women from this commercial elite<br />

sought to make names for themselves abroad by provid<strong>in</strong>g valuable<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about trends <strong>in</strong> world commerce <strong>and</strong> local conditions<br />

overseas, which could then be used to solidify economic <strong>and</strong> political<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence for their bus<strong>in</strong>ess partners <strong>and</strong> relatives at home. The<br />

result, as Lars Maischak suggests for Bremen merchants <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth-century<br />

Baltimore, was a ‘conservative cosmopolitan’ ethos<br />

capable of reproduc<strong>in</strong>g traditional values <strong>and</strong> foster<strong>in</strong>g a modern<br />

awareness of foreign markets, technological advancements, <strong>and</strong><br />

trans-Atlantic capital flows. 23 Their cosmopolitan communities came<br />

under threat du<strong>in</strong>g the wars of national unification of the 1860s, forc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the opposite ends of their network to <strong>in</strong>tegrate more fully <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

American <strong>and</strong> German state systems <strong>in</strong> which they respectively<br />

resided. 24<br />

A Hanseatic bus<strong>in</strong>ess model comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g trade neutrality with cosmopolitan<br />

network<strong>in</strong>g proved to be a cost-effective means of exploit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

economic opportunities <strong>in</strong> a wide variety of global markets for<br />

three ma<strong>in</strong> reasons. First, it relied on small-scale bus<strong>in</strong>esses whose<br />

members were will<strong>in</strong>g to travel far <strong>and</strong> wide <strong>in</strong> search of specialized<br />

market opportunities <strong>and</strong> who bought <strong>and</strong> sold goods based on global<br />

trends, not national economic priorities. Hanseatic firms <strong>and</strong> private<br />

vessels preferred to operate <strong>in</strong> regional economies where the<br />

costs of security <strong>and</strong> local <strong>in</strong>frastructure were borne by a comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

of outside <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>digenous powers. They cemented their status as<br />

efficient <strong>in</strong>termediaries who channelled goods <strong>and</strong> services from one<br />

economic region to another, such as the trans-African cowrie shell<br />

trade or the <strong>in</strong>ter-coastal rice trade <strong>in</strong> the South Ch<strong>in</strong>a Sea. In some<br />

cases, these transactions led to direct transfers of German-manufactured<br />

goods—textiles from Bielefeld or Brünn, harmonicas from<br />

Thur<strong>in</strong>gia, gra<strong>in</strong> alcohol from East Prussia, metal ware from the<br />
