The Joy of Music
It’s time to put a smile on your face and a song in your heart through the
Joy of Music! Dust off those piano keys, rescue your old guitar from the
attic or get ready to strengthen your vocals. You’re never too young – or
to old – to take private lessons. Ability level does not matter; you will be
amazed at how much you improve in just a few weeks.
Bring your own instrument (except piano students!). Your instructor will
advise which training materials to use, based on your personal learning
style. Students will have the opportunity to perform in the Spring Recital
on May 17. However, private lessons will continue throughout the summer,
based on space availability.
Call 478-445-5277 to register, or visit our office at 100 Chappell Hall.
Lessons are $70 per month for four half-hour lessons. All lessons are
structured, one-on-one instructional meetings between the instructor and
student.
ROAD SCHOLAR
Adventures in Lifelong Learning
Explore the World with Road
Scholar and Georgia College
Road Scholar educational adventures
are created by Elderhostel,
Inc., the not-for-profit world leader
in lifelong learning since 1975.
Road Scholar offers 6,500 educational
tours and learning vacations in all
50 states and throughout 150 countries.
Georgia College is proud to be
an official Road Scholar provider –
offering programs throughout
Georgia and South Carolina.
Our programs have no hidden costs.
In fact, they are priced to be allinclusive
offering expert-led lectures,
field trips, comfortable lodging
and all meals. Compare the
price of one of our programs to what
it would cost to duplicate the experience
on your own (if that’s even
possible), and you’ll see what we
mean by “remarkable value.”
We handle all the details, including
ones you may not anticipate, so
you can focus on your learning
experience. The educational focus
of our programs makes us completely
different from a commercial travel
tour. However, there are no
grades or tests on Road Scholar programs.
All that’s needed are an
inquiring mind, an adventurous
spirit and the belief that learning
and discovery are lifelong pursuits.
Take a look – we would love for
you to join Georgia College at one of
our programs in Georgia or South
Carolina!
DEFENSIVE DRIVING
Save a life! Drive defensively! More than 43,000 people lose their lives in
motor vehicle crashes each year, and over two million more suffer disabling
injuries, according to the National Safety Council. For teenagers,
cars are still the leading cause of death. “Death by driving”
is the third highest preventable cause of death.
The triple threat of high speeds, impaired or
careless driving and not using occupant
restraints threatens every driver, regardless of
how careful or how skilled. Driving defensively
means not only taking responsibility for yourself
and your actions, but also keeping an eye
on "the other guy." GC is proud to be your partner
in striving to prevent automobile accidents.
In addition, you can save money on your
Plein Air Painting at the Oconee River
Greenway and the Macon River Walk
Plein air painting, a term derived from the French phrase en plein air,
literally means “in the open air.” It's a familiar concept today, but in the
late 1800s when the Impressionists ventured out of their studios into
nature to investigate and capture the effects of sunlight and different
times of days on a subject, it was quite revolutionary. Your subject matter,
as well as your medium, is entirely up to you as you discover the
many ways to achieve the results you desire with your painting using different
techniques, tools, colors and composition to complete your painting.
The instructor will demonstrate, lecture, critique and provide individualized
instruction. You will focus on what you see, not what you can
imagine or intellectualize about the subject. Register early to receive a
list of supplies you need to bring to the workshop. This workshop is for
ages 15 and up. We will meet at the main entrance to the Oconee River
Greenway in Milledgeville and the main entrance to the River Walk on
Spring Street in Macon. Since this is an outdoor workshop, you will be
notified if inclement weather prevents the class from meeting. The
make-up date will be the next Saturday.
auto insurance (or, parents can save money on your teenager’s insurance!)
by successfully completing this National Safety Council Defensive Driving
course. Georgia Senate Bill 433 requires insurance companies in Georgia
to give families with good driving experience a 10 percent discount on portions
of their auto insurance upon completion of this course. Eligibility for
the discount will continue for three years, provided that no driver
commits a moving traffic offense or has a claim against the policy
based on an at-fault accident. Consult with your insurance
agent to determine exactly how completion of this program
will affect your insurance rates. Please bring paper and
pencils to class. This course is not for points reduction.
CPR/AED Certification
for Adults, Children and Infants
CPR is an emergency procedure used to revive an adult, child or infant who
has stopped breathing and/or whose heart isn’t beating. Such incidences
can occur following drowning, heart attacks, strokes, severe allergic reactions,
electrocutions, or may be due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
SCA is caused by problems with the heart's electrical system causing irregular
heartbeats resulting in the heart stopping. If SCA is the emergency, once
CPR has been performed and the heart is beating again, the use of an
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can restore a normal beat to a
heart. These portable AED devices are often found in public places, such as
shopping malls, golf courses, businesses, airports, airplanes, casinos, convention
centers, hotels, sports venues and schools.
This OSHA approved Red Cross course gives you, wherever you are, the
knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and care for such injuries and
sudden illnesses. Instruction includes Adult, Child and Infant CPR and AED
training. Upon successful completion, you will receive a two-year certification
from the American Red Cross. You must be at least 15 years old to take
the course.
Chair Yoga
You don’t even have to get on the floor! Yoga is not for just the young,
hip and flexible. Many yoga techniques can be adapted for any age
group or fitness level and we have done this to fit your needs! You’re
probably wondering why should you try a new form of exercise, one
about which you know very little? Many other forms of exercise such as
weight lifting, jogging and even walking are rough on your joints and
can cause pain and arthritis to flare up. Yoga is gentle, fights common
ailments, reduces joint stiffness and pain and improves flexibility,
strength and balance. Yoga focuses on your whole body and spirit. You
will get a complete workout and experience feelings of relaxation and
peace. With its slow, rhythmic stretching and flexing, yoga is ideal for
seniors who want to improve their overall health. Yoga is also a new
social adventure. You'll likely learn a ton of new things and meet a fun
group of people who like the same things you do. So wear comfortable
clothes, grab a friend and come on over and try it. We bet you’re going
to love it!
