German School Association Newsletter
October 10, 2007
Hello! It’s the second week of October and our Fall Fundraiser is quickly approaching! Please
read this newsletter for details!
SINCERE CONGRATULATIONS TO FRAU GERDA JUHASZ, GERMAN WOMAN OF
THE YEAR 2007 AND ALSO FRAU KAROLINE LINDENMAIER, PAST GERMAN
WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2006.
FALL FUNDRAISER- Our annual Fall Fundraiser Luncheon will be held on Oct. 21, from 12 to
2:30 PM. Roast pork, spätzle, roteskraut (red cabbage), salad, and dessert will be served. After
lunch, the school children will put on a short program about this year’s theme, “Die Schweiz”. It
is important to stress again that all of the school children are needed for this program, even
those who do not have speaking parts.
The cost of the luncheon is $12.50 for adults, and $5.00 for children. Reservations can
be made by calling our treasurer, Evelyn Klass at 330-725-3350. Because of the need for an
advance reservation count, reservations MUST be made by this Sunday, October 14. Please be
aware that we cannot guarantee last minute requests for seating.
PLEASE VOLUNTEER- We need YOU! We still are in need of volunteers for the coming
fundraiser. We also encourage our students in Gruppe 5, 6, and 7 to volunteer.
We especially need help with:
* FOOD LINE SERVERS * KITCHEN HELP * RUNNERS *CLEAN-UP
A meal discount of $5.00 is available for adults volunteering at least one hour for or
during this event. Student volunteers will also receive a small token of appreciation.
If you’ve been to any of our events, you know that some of the nicest volunteers around
are at our events. Won’t you consider joining them and help make this event a success? Please
contact Corinna Fogwell at 440-846-9925 as soon as possible to volunteer. Also note that you
must still make reservations with Evelyn Klass at school or at 330-725-3350.
Raffle Prizes- Now is the time to bring in your raffle prizes! We encourage all our students and
families of the German school to support the raffle by donating items,
even if they cannot attend the luncheon itself.
At the luncheon, two raffle tables (one for adults, and one for children) will be set up with
raffle items and tickets will be sold to win them. If you have any prizes or gifts for these tables, it
would be a very helpful if you could bring them in advance to the German School office.
A letter from our school is available in the office for you to give to an employer or a place of
business you frequent, if you would like to ask them to donate a service, gift, or gift certificates.
A receipt for tax purposes is also available, as well as our non-profit number for cash gifts. Please
see Frau Hebrank if you need any further information. We thank you in advance for all your
donations, as they bring in additional funds that keep our school tuition cost low.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED!!!-Tricia Hiss is no longer able to continue to be in charge of the
Campbell’s Labels for Education and the BoxTops for Education programs. If you are interested
in helping out with these programs, please contact her at 330-666-3557, or by email at
Tigerlilyrealty@hotmail.com, for more information. A BIG THANK YOU, TRICIA, FOR ALL
YOUR HELP IN STARTING THESE PROGRAMS AND FOR YOUR TIME AND
DEDICATION!
Advent Calendars- The school will be selling Advent Calendars at the Fall Fundraiser,
on Wednesdays during German School and at the Friday Night Fish Fry. The price is $2.00 each.
These calendars are from Germany and contain chocolates. Please consider buying one or more
for your family and friends. They make nice gifts and the proceeds support our school. If you
could help with selling the calendars at the Fall Fundraiser, or possibly at other times at
Donauschwaben club functions (mostly Saturday evenings), please return the volunteer form or
contact Evelyn Klass at 330-725-3350. We would especially like to thank Mr. Richard Kolefar
for again volunteering to sell the calendars at the Friday Fish Fry. Mr. Kolefar sold Advent
Calendars last year when he was a student here and graciously told us that he would be willing to
sell them at the dinners this year, even though he is currently not able to be a student! When you
see him at the Fish Fry, please stop by and say hello!
Continuing Education Seminar for Teachers of German- Frau Hebrank and five teachers from
our school attended a continuing education seminar for teachers of German in New York last
weekend. Frau Heike Gombar gave an in-depth presentation on German Summer Day Camp so
other schools around the country could start similar programs.
Frau Hebrank reports that among other German Language Schools, ours is truly unique
and awe inspiring. Besides having a Sprachdiplom program, our school has also been
able to provide five levels of instruction for adult students (many schools have only one
or two). We have various activities during the school year and a successful summer day camp. We
also receive outstanding support from the Donauschwaben German American Cultural Center,
including free use of the facilities every Wednesday night. No other school has facilities like these!
Because of this, we do not have rent, insurance, or janitorial expenses. We are also able to keep
our equipment, including computers in a dedicated room, on site. This tremendous support allows
us to offset our tuition cost, which is extremely low in comparison to other schools. We are able
to further keep our costs down by various fundraisers during the year (which we could not do
without your support!)
We sincerely encourage everyone to take advantage of and support the various opportunities and
activities here at Donauschwaben’s German American Cultural Center. And we take this
opportunity to once again thank them all for their support.
The Donauschwaben Youth Group- will be selling giftcards on Wednesday nights during
German School to help finance their upcoming trip to Germany.
Notes from the Deutsche Schule Interessengemeinschaft Meeting Sept. 26, 2007-
Parents are asked to immediately notify the school administration of any problems or questions
pertaining to school related situations and concerns.

Because of its length, we are considering changing the name of our parent support group,
“Interessengemeinschaft zur Pflege der Deutschen Sprache” to “Deutsche Sprachschule Cleveland
und Beirat”. This notice will appear again and will be voted on during the next meeting in Sept.
2008. A Beirat is defined as a advisory council or committee.
The school has requested the administration at Lenau Park to prepare a fire exit plan for the sake
of the safety of the students in case of an emergency. Plans are being considered and reviewed at
this time. More information will be coming soon.
It was again noted that the code of conduct is mandatory and therefore it must be signed by a
parent or guardian before minor children will be accepted as enrolled students of German
Language School Cleveland.
As noted last year, singing is a vital part of German language instruction and culture. Parents are
strongly encouraged to support the time set aside on Wednesday nights for singing. The school
has purchased new songbooks for the children. These songbooks
are enjoyable, with illustrations reminiscent of Hummel figurines. The adult classes
also have new text books, complete with a CD.
The profit for the Fall fundraiser was $1935. The raffle profit was $614.
The profit for the Easter Bunny Brunch was $1152 and the raffle profit was $503.
Our Advent calendar sale raised $1,094. The total for BoxTops was $173.30.
As you can see from the figures above, fundraisers provide substantial moneys for
our school operating expenses. Thank you for volunteering and for your support!
Campbell Labels and BoxTops for Education-Please save and bring in your boxtops and labels
as soon as possible for the turn in this month. And encourage your family and friends to save
them, too. Thanks for helping!
Inclement Weather- PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE DONAUSCHWABEN GERMAN
AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER IN CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER! At this time,
we would like to explain the way we inform the public about school closings in case of inclement
weather. The school is part of the “iAlert Instant School Alert System” which will make
announcements on local radio and TV. German School is not definitely closed
if the Olmsted Falls schools are closed in the morning and could possibly be closed even
if Olmsted Falls schools were open because of inclement weather. Information about the stations
that air the school closings will be posted soon on the bulletin board in the lower level of the
building and also in the Service Bldg.
A newsletter copy for the current month is posted on the bulletin board across from the school
office (located in the basement, across from Kindergarten 2 for your reference. Additional
newsletter copies are available at the school office. Past and current newsletters are also posted
on the school website.

feature some Swiss sites.
