“In the crowded forest understory, some nuts find a way to germinate.
However, there is still a way to go before a sapling can successfully
grow into a mature tree, as it will first need to prosper by the death
of another tree. Only then will the way be open for sunlight to reach
down to the forest floor. Before that chink of light is opened there may
be as little as two percent light levels on the ground; not enough for
plants to prosper. These conditions, which create the gloomy open spaces
below the canopies above, sparked the famous biologist Edward Wilson
to speak of the understory as being like a ‘green cathedral.’”
Reaching for the Sun
Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is, in this sense, a “green cathedral;” full of seeds
and saplings. Growing, quenching our thirst from the springs of salvation, reaching our
limbs heavenward. The everchanging life cycle of the church and its people reminds
us of Wilson’s image of the green cathedral. Even as beloved trees fall, they reveal light
to the next generation of saplings below. Change, truly, is our only constant. We are an
Easter people, and it is in the transformative movement from death to resurrection that
we see our growth as the baptized people of God. It is this constant cycle of giving and
growing that brings trees closer to the sunlight and us closer to God.
As the Body of Christ at 13th and Broadway in downtown Kansas City, we find ourselves
in a green, growing season. As we work together with a collective mission of discovering,
hearing and heeding God’s call, we grow toward the sky, reach for the sun, and explore
our everexpanding universe. As we learn to give more willingly of our time, talent and
treasure, we in turn bring growth to ourselves and to our church community.
During this period of intense discernment, we have come to realize we are not searching
for a leader who will simply part the canopy and point us toward the sun. Rather, we
seek someone with whom we can grow, someone who will stand in the same patch of
sunlight with us as we undertake our urgent mission of doing God’s work: and not just in
our forest, but beyond.
A Prayer for Discernment
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide
the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a
faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Our Roots
In the years following the Civil War, Kansas City grew into a major rail and river center
on the route of westward expansion. By 1870, a thriving residential community known
as “Quality Hill” was situated on the western edge of the city. This is where a group of
Episcopalians established the parish later known as Grace Church.
By 1890, the congregation had begun construction of the present church building and had
completed its parish hall. During an ensuing depression, construction went slowly because
the congregation had determined to proceed only when sufficient money was available.
Finally, on December 16, 1894, the first service was held in the completed church.
The transitional Norman church building was designed by a local architect, based on
ideas gained during a tour of English parish churches by the Rector, the Rev. Cameron
Mann. Embellished through the years by a variety of stained glass windows, a Tiffany
Rood Screen (which is now 100 years old) and many other memorial additions, the
building is an architectural and historic gem.
A second founding parish known as Trinity was established in 1883. Its building,
modeled after Trinity Church, Boston, was located on the eastern side of the city.
Although the parish enjoyed longstanding leadership under the Rev. Robert Talbot,
the congregation was never able to retire the mortgage on the building.
As the population of Kansas City moved farther south, both parishes experienced
declining membership and in 1917 a decision was made to merge and become
Grace and Holy Trinity Church. The joint parish would meet in the debtfree building
of Grace Church under the leadership of Trinity’s dynamic young Rector, the
Rev. Robert Nelson Spencer.
In 1930, the Rev. Mr. Spencer became the third Bishop of West Missouri. Five years
later, Grace and Holy Trinity was designated as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese,
with the Very Rev. Claude Willard Sprouse as the first Dean.
Although its surroundings have undergone many changes during the ensuing years,
the Cathedral has maintained its presence in downtown Kansas City, while drawing
membership from the entire metropolitan area. Having gradually acquired the
properties in its entire block, the Cathedral occupies a campus providing a green
oasis in the midst of commercial and convention facilities.
Areas of Growth
We are proud of many recent achievements and progress in our life together.
Some of our more significant accomplishments in the last five years include:
✝ Championing and housing Culinary Cornerstones, a groundbreaking program that
trains people for jobs in the food service industry. The program addresses root causes
of hunger by providing necessary job skills and placement assistance.
✝ Supporting Maison de Naissance, a women’s birthing center in Haiti, with funds,
resources, and volunteers.
✝ Partnering with our companion diocese in Botswana to sponsor the development
of a day care center for orphans and vulnerable children.
✝ Installing a Children’s Chapel and implementing Wearing God’s Promises curriculum
for our Children’s Formation program.
✝ Forming a Strategic Planning Committee in 2007, to ensure that Grace and Holy
Trinity Cathedral’s ministries, programs, budget and allocation of resources are
consistent with the mission of our church.
✝ Formulating a comprehensive Governance Policy to provide consistent, operational
definition of clergy and lay leadership.
✝ Being designated a Kansas City Cooling Center to provide relief to those without
proper shelter or resources during summer heat advisories.
✝ Hosting hundreds of community and diocesan events in Founders’ Hall, a $4 million
addition to the Cathedral campus that was completed in 1999.
✝ Forming new organizations such as the Handypersons Guild and the Garden Guild
to undertake improvements to, and maintenance of, our beautiful campus.
✝ Implementing a monthly Wednesday evening meal and fellowship time called
Café Grazia. The meal is prepared and served by parishioners, accompanied by
prayer and followed by small group meetings.
Our City
Greater Kansas City is a fifteencounty metropolitan area straddling the border between
the states of Missouri and Kansas. The metro area has a population of just over two
million citizens. Several satellite cities adjoin the Kansas City outskirts: Independence,
Missouri; Kansas City, Kansas; Olathe, Kansas and Overland Park, Kansas each boast
a population of more than 100,000.
The Kansas City metro is an ethnically-diverse and culturally rich area. Kansas City has
lower leisure and lifestyle costs than most major cities.
In 2007, Worldwide ERL and Primary Relocation recognized Kansas City as the third
best overall city for relocating families in the United States. In 2010, Money Magazine
rated Overland Park, Kansas the seventh best city to inhabit in the US. Neighboring
Olathe, Kansas was rated 11th and Shawnee, Kansas, 39th. Kansas City is one of only
two metro areas to have two cities in the top fifteen.
Our place in the heart of the city
Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is located in an urban setting on the western edge of
downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Our geographic location provides us with substantial
potential for growth and unique opportunities for interaction with all segments of the
metropolitan area.
To the east of our Cathedral campus is the Bartle Hall Convention Center. Set to open
later this year, south of the convention center and just blocks from the Cathedral, is
a revolutionary new Performing Arts Center. Beyond that, in the newly revitalized
Power and Light District, lies the area’s newest crop of restaurants, theatres, hotels and
entertainment venues. The Sprint Center arena overlooks the Crossroads Arts District,
all within a mile of the Cathedral.
Looking to the north and northwest, the Cathedral is across the street from the new
Kansas City Southern headquarters, and one block further north is the Cathedral of
the Immaculate Conception of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City/St. Joseph.
The surrounding area is undergoing rejuvenation as an urban living center. Restoration
and construction of historically compatible apartments, lofts and condominiums are
providing housing for a growing community of young adults and new arrivals to the city.
Currently, 18,000 people call downtown Kansas City home.
To the west and south, the Cathedral is accessed by a network of interstate highways,
reaching to all corners of Greater Kansas City. Parishoners come from all directions in
the bi-state area; many traveling a great distance so that we may share our life together
in Christ.
Our Diocese
In 1835, at its Triennial General Convention, the Protestant Episcopal Church elected
The Reverend Jackson Kemper the first Bishop of the church for the “northwest,” which
included presentday Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. The
Diocese of Missouri was established five years later, and included the entire state for the
next fifty years.
In 1890, the area west of a north/south line, roughly down the middle of the state, was
designated the Diocese of West Missouri. The new parish hall at Grace Church was
completed just in time to host the founding convention of the
diocese, at which The Right Reverend Edward R. Atwell was
elected the first Bishop. The seventh Bishop, The Right Reverend
Barry R. Howe, has served since 1998. He announced his retirement
in 2010 and the Very Reverend Martin S. Field will be consecrated as
the Diocese’s eighth Bishop on March 5, 2011.
In 1935, Grace and Holy Trinity Church in Kansas City was designated
as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese. Since 1980 the diocese has been
headquartered in the Diocesan Center, located on the southwest corner
of the Cathedral campus.
ministries in the diocese include:
✝ Fifty parish and mission congregations throughout four deaneries.
✝ The St. Luke’s Health System, the largest notforprofit health care
system and one of the largest employers in the metropolitan Kansas
City area, with hospitals throughout the region, including St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas
City, the flagship health care facility in the system.
✝ Bishop Spencer Place, an independent living, assisted living and nursing care center,
located in midtown Kansas City.
✝ St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, a prekindergarten through eighth grade school
which is operated by St. Paul’s Church, Kansas City.
✝ Episcopal Community Services, a Jubilee ministry of service to the metropolitan area
provided through the Diocese of West Missouri and the Diocese of Kansas.
✝ Two regional ministries, both in the Northern Deanery: Sacred Hills Regional
Ministry, which partners three congregations; and Northeast Regional Ministry,
which partners five congregations.
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
Cathedral Buildings and Grounds
Like a sturdy tree growing in a forest, the native rock Cathedral building speaks of
strength. We worship within this ark, where all are welcome and can survive the storms
of our urban existence. These walls shelter, nourish and give strength. As we turn to
follow the processional cross at the end of each service, we are empowered to go forth
into the world to do God’s work.
The oldest element on our campus is the original guild hall, now the Parish House,
which is home to offices for our staff, the Cathedral Book Store, the Common Room
and Library, and the Music Department facilities.
Added in the 1950s was Haden Hall, connected to the old parish house by a walkway
to the east. Originally an addition for all types of parish activities, it has now been
converted to serve its primary function as church school classrooms, a youth meeting
room and the nursery.
In the southwest corner of the campus is the headquarters of the Diocese of West
Missouri. The building, an award-winning structure designed for compatibility with the
Cathedral architecture, was erected in 1980.
The newest addition to our facilities is Founders’ Hall, which since 1999 has served as
a gathering place for most parish activities and for diocesan and community functions.
From regular Sunday coffee hours to youth events to emergency shelters to concerts
— events of all kinds make use of its welcoming space. A primary consideration in the
design of Founders’ Hall was to provide increased space for the Kansas City Community
Kitchen. While the KCCK was recently moved offcampus to a larger and more
geographically accessible space, the kitchen in our Founders’ Hall now serves as the
training ground and catering kitchen for Culinary Cornerstones.
Nestled between Founders’ Hall and the old parish house is a grassy courtyard, which is
bordered on one side by a Memorial Garden. Here, among flowers and green plants is a
place where members may have ashes of their loved ones interred.
Our occupation of a complete city block means that we have the luxury of both greenery
and a large amount of convenient parking. We are also fortunate to have the cooperation
of our corporate neighbor across the street to allow us additional free parking on
Sundays and for special events.
Worship
Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is eucharistically centered, with a traditional worship
style using Rite II liturgies. The nave and sanctuary, renovated in 19861987, offer
a beautiful setting for worship and allow for ceremonies in keeping with the best in
contemporary liturgical practice.
The large marble baptismal font, highlighted by a fine carved screen, and the dramatic
freestanding altar and refinished reredos, lift up the two Sacraments of the Gospel.
Our Sunday worship schedule includes Holy Eucharist at 8:00 am, 10:15 am, and 5:00 pm.
Weekday Eucharist is celebrated at 12:05 pm.
A service of healing is offered one Sunday each year during all three services. The
layingonofhands and anointing for healing is available during the communion at every
Sunday service, yearround.
Worship life is enhanced by participation of the laity in a number of capacities,
including acolytes and adult servers, lectors, lay Eucharistic visitors, chalice bearers,
ushers and Altar Guild members.
Music
Our Organist/Director of Music, Canon John Schaefer, is committed to sharing the
vision of the clerical leadership, particularly the Dean. Because of this, the worship of
God through music at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral is alive and well.
Music is an integral part of each service. The 8:00 am service includes a prelude, postlude
and offertory hymn; the 10:15 is the primary choral service; the 5:00 pm service is a sung
service, led by cantors.
The Cathedral’s musicians have worked hard over many years to provide the most
spiritual and sensitive support for the Liturgical practice that is the focus for our life
together. It has been said that the Cathedral’s music compares favorably with the best
offerings of major Episcopal Churches and Cathedrals around the country.
The Cathedral supports four choirs: The Trinity Choir (Adult Choir), The Tallis Singers
(High School Ensemble), Grace Choraliers (2nd to 6th Graders) and The Bell Choir, all
under the direction of Canon Schaefer.
A Gabriel Kney organ, which was installed in 1981 and refurbished in 2004, generally
accompanies the Choirs. It is one of the finest pipe organs in the region, and perhaps
the nation. A D. Leslie Smith chamber organ, a Steinway grand piano (one of three
on campus), and a Finney harpsichord provide additional instrumental variety. Guest
instrumentalists are often incorporated into the worship service.
Cathedral performance venues are very much in demand for musical and other
performances and the Cathedral community is generous in providing them for the use
of visiting artists. Annually, for the past 31 years, the Cathedral has hosted a Messiah
Singalong, close to Christmas. It is also host to the annual Bachathon, sponsored by
the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
Christian Formation
children
In recent years, we have tripled the size of the nursery in Haden Hall to respond to
the needs of our parishioners and visitors. Haden Hall is also home to our Children’s
Formation and Children’s Chapels, and outside Haden Hall is a colorful, secure
playground.
Children’s Formation (church school) is offered at 9:15 am on Sundays for children,
ages 3 through 5th grade. The curriculum for our younger children is Godly Play.
The 4th and 5th Graders use a curriculum that engages them in discussions about
how their faith can be applied to daily situations and occurrences.
Following Formation, at 10:15 am, we offer two Children’s Chapels. Disciples Chapel
is designed for kindergartners and older children, to offer them a chapel experience.
It follows the traditional liturgy of the “big church,” while using childfriendly language.
The Lambs Chapel is more interactive, for children younger than age five. They build
with blocks, sing to movement songs, play with instruments, and enjoy circle time with
a Bible story.
Youth
Developing ministries to serve the needs of our youth in grades 612 is a high priority
at the Cathedral. Youth gatherings focus on Episcopal curriculum and confirmation
preparation.
Middle schoolers meet on Sunday mornings to talk about God, school, friends and other
important things in their lives. This is the time of their lives when they grow beyond
tagging along at church and begin their unique faith journeys. We use a program of
videos and fun exercises called “re:form,” which helps us teach the Episcopal view of the
nature of God and how we worship in church. Confirmation preparation takes place in
the form of annual retreats for youth between 6th and 8th grade, so that over a twoyear
period all youth will have been exposed to the full complement of preparatory material
and discussion.
High school students spend Sunday mornings in a variety of activities, ranging from
singing in the Tallis Singers, acolyting and discussing how God and religion play a part
in their daily lives. We occasionally engage in a “media dissection” to wrestle with the
vision of life as portrayed in the media and bring it into conversation with our Christian
faith through Scripture and the Book of Common Prayer.
Wednesday nights are for fun and fellowship, and we have witnessed a steady increase
in this group as the Cathedral youth invite their friends to attend. In addition to their
Sunday and Wednesday meetings, our teenagers have participated in a variety of mission
trips, fundraisers, Missionpalooza, and Happenings. They also occasionally help prepare
food for the Kansas City Community Kitchen.
adults
We provide a variety of educational offerings: EFM (Education for Ministry) is a popular
leadership program, with 19 current participants and more than 100, from our parish
and others in the city, who have participated in recent years.
On Sunday mornings between services, Adult Forum presentations are available
throughout the year. Subjects range from current interests to historical subjects.
Also offered, during the interim between services and again on a weeknight is our
catechumenate program, The Road to Canterbury.
A longstanding and highly successful feature is our annual Lenten Academy, held on
consecutive Wednesday evenings during Lent. Following a simple Lenten dinner,
outside speakers, as well as clergy and lay people from within the congregation, present
a choice of four or five courses.
Many of the Small Group Ministries, especially those providing Bible study, also
As a community of people who come from all corners of the metroplex, we especially
treasure opportunities to celebrate together.
Easter Vigil culminates in a colorful and bountiful reception in Founders’ Hall. The
next morning sees an abundant search for eggs on the lawn by children of all ages. Each
year we celebrate the Blessing of the Animals, and at the colorful Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan,
sounds echo off the rafters as bagpipers and drummers join our processional. On Trinity
Sunday, our parish picnic is an event that spills out from Founders’ Hall onto the lawn
with special games and activities for families.
Sunday coffee hours convene in Founders’ Hall with tasty snacks provided by the Holy
Hands Committee. Guild of the Christ Child hosts special baptism receptions, as well
as a cookie exchange during the holiday season. Fall Rally Day finds Founders’ Hall
crowded with booths for Cathedral organizations, giving parishioners a reminder of
activities available for their participation.
Once a month, our Wednesday evening Café Grazia brings us together for a meal and
fellowship, followed by small group meetings. Our annual chili cookoff involves dozens
of competitors with the hope of winning the coveted silver ladle. Our winetasting event
is an elegant affair and a successful fundraiser every year.
The Dean’s Cup Classic is a June golf tournament kicked off with a pre-tournament
reception. A barbecue lunch and awards ceremony follow the close of play. This festive
event is a fundraiser for Culinary Cornerstones. In addition, a fall Croquet Tournament
is a fun and joyful afternoon of competition, which raises funds for the children of
Botswana, through the Botswana Palapye Project.
Outreach through Social Action
Outreach at the Cathedral happens within our walls and outside our campus, from our
Kansas City neighbors to the children of Haiti and the people of Botswana. The people
of the Cathedral help our brothers and sisters who are disadvantaged, not only with our
lips but with our lives. Over the last few years we have shared our time, treasures and
talents to make a difference through these programs:
episcopal hunger relief network of episcopal communitY services
We continue to provide financial support and volunteers to the Kansas City Community
Kitchen (KCCK) and the ECS Episcopal Hunger Relief Network. This support included
an allocation of $20,000 to the KCCK, and ongoing hosting of the organization’s
annual Pancake Breakfast, with proceeds going to the Kitchen as well as to Maison de
Naissance, a birthing center in Haiti. The Cathedral hosts several programs for ECS,
including its annual wine tasting event, a series of informational lunches designed to
promote hunger relief, and the Culinary Cornerstones program, including an annual
graduation events in Founders’ Hall three times a year.
foster care outreach project
The Cathedral continues to expand our Foster Care Project. Our goal is to provide
contacts of love and caring for children in foster care in our metropolitan area.
Highlights of this program are a Christmas bowling party for foster children, with
games, gift bags, lunch and a visit from Santa. The Easter Outreach Program for
Foster Children, which provides Easter Baskets to children at Kaw Valley Center and
Crittenden Children’s Center, continues to expand. And the Birthday Program, which
provides discount store gift cards to area foster care teenagers as birthday presents,
also continues to be supported by designated plate donations at the Cathedral. We are
also currently involved in a pilot program with Crittenden to provide small educational
grants to foster children who are “aging out” of foster care.
other ministries
There are several other programs and ministries that we support in many different
ways. We provide volunteer teams for Habitat for Humanity/The House that Abraham
Built, we are active in interfaith and diversity initiatives, and we are exploring a prison
ministry. Our Charitable Needlework group has knitted hundreds of baby caps, wraps
and washcloths for Maison de Naissance, and dozens of prayer shawls to comfort those
in need over the years. GHTC has participated in AIDS Walk Kansas City for 16 years,
with adult and youth teams. The 2010 Walk raised more than $516,000 for HIV/AIDS
agencies in our area. Major ongoing priorities include growing financial support for the
Friends of Maison de Naissance and the Diocese of Botswana.
Through all of these programs, our goal is, at the very least, twofold: to mirror Christ’s
love by helping those in need, and to provide multiple opportunities for members of the
Cathedral to become involved in these lifechanging ministries, themselves.
Stewardship —
Giving and Growing in Christ’s Name
Christian stewardship is grateful and responsible use of God’s gifts in the light of God’s
purpose as revealed in Jesus Christ. Christian stewards, empowered by the Holy Spirit,
commit themselves to conscious, purposeful decisions.
We are stewards when we live and tell the Good News;
✝ Sharing God in seeking justice, peace, and the integrity of creation in an
interdependent universe;
✝ Wisely employing Godgiven human resources, abilities, and relationships; sharing
the material resources we hold and giving them in service, justice, and compassion;
✝ Providing for future generations; sharing in the life, worship, and responsible
stewardship of the Church and of its mission.
Both for the individual and for the community, stewardship is a joyful act for the sake
of God’s world.
Given this definition, it is difficult to comprehend that stewardship has been
synonymous only with an annual “pledge drive,” but for so many for so long, that has
been our experience. The lay leaders of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral have been
working to broaden our understanding of stewardship, so that together we may see
stewardship as a sacramental response to God’s love that transforms us as apostles of
Christ and transforms the world through our worship, work, and community.
An important component of that transition is the recognition that Stewardship goes on
every day and we are all part of its realization. Through God’s gracious acceptance, his
nourishment of our faith, and his call to us, we have been given all that is required to
accomplish this transformation.
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees
under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”
In Closing
We pray that the roots of our life together will gain hold and spread deep, drawing
nourishment from God and from each other. We seek a rector who will grow with us
in the glorious light of God’s immeasurable and infinite love. During this period of
profound discernment, we pray for guidance and faith. We ask God to bless us and our
ministries, that we may fulfill, to the greatest extent possible, the potential for which
God placed us on earth.
